I happily stumbled upon your channel while considering ballast box projects, as an alternative to that expensive Big Tractor Toolbox thing, and I like your idea. My question is to whether those ballast boxes on Amazon (the green and red ones) had any problems like the ones reviewed on Amazon had, as far as the pins being too close together. Not from damage during shipping, but in the sense of the original design and fabrication. The info you provide on the amount of dry/wet concrete needed is super helpful... Looking forward to get my own project started..
Hi Mark! I didn't see reviews about the pins being too close together when I was researching them. All I can tell you was the Titan dimensions were just fine, but as I noted in the video, the Titan version for John Deere tractors (green) had the pins mounted a littler higher on the ballast box for whatever reason. I've been really pleased with my Titan and the ability to carry a decent amount of tools on it has been really nice. If you need to carry more, you might want to look at my carry-all videos which seem to be very popular. Thanks for watching!

I’m gonna do this to my fathers ballast box. What’s that little hand took u used in the side for marking ?? Made a rattle noise. What’s it called I’d like to maybe get one. I assume it’s for marking and drilling ?

Filled with concrete you are likely over the 800lb limit. Add another 100+ lbs of tools and chains, and you are definitely over the limit.

Great video as always! I picked up a factory Kubota ballast box before winter and I am gonna do something similar to this. I feel there are so many ways to customize them. I have a few different things to do with mine!

I like the way you plan ahead of time future needs. The rods will be useful for sure! This is giving me ideas for my big concrete ballast. I should add a "foot" on it to be able to pick it up with pallet forks and/or wheels to roll on concrete pad. It's currently a pain to install and move. Pat's easy change is a modern version of the old Case Eagle Hitch system. Having this kind of equipment being delivered is always at risk of damages. It looks so sturdy, so they don't give any attention and finally damage it. That is why I fabricate it instead (lol!). Step drills are very nice, especially for larger holes where it drills a perfectly round hole. An open steel box like this is pretty much a woofer! Ear protection is not an option! Cutting metal with abrasive disk in a wood workshop is a great justification to build another shop!!! Thanks for sharing Martin!
Thanks, Joe! Once the shop is built, I’ll probably keep mine on a dolly under the shed on the back of the shop where I can roll it in and hook it up in the comfort of my shop. I like the Pat’s system but haven’t ruled out a quick hitch. Almost all of my attachments are supposedly quick hitch compatible. Nonetheless, there’s a good bit of variation on pin spacing among them. Yes, working with that metal box was extremely loud! I had to turn the the volume in the video a lot to make it bearable for the viewer! If the rains will ever cease, I may one day get to build my shop. Thanks for watching!

I watched all 3 of your nice videos and was ready to do this...until...a quick google search showed that concrete has a weight of 150 pounds per cubic foot...whereas iron/steel are in the range of 460-500 pounds per cubic foot...so I was thinking that I would find someway of adding suitcase type weights instead of the box. Not as cheap, I'm sure, but possibly easier to deal with and more compact. I do like your channel, and this is a good idea for those that decide to go with concrete.

Hi Henry! Well, I bought mine pre-Trump tariffs and pre-Coronavirus. Plus these days nothing is a good deal on Amazon. You might try Titan’s website to see if it’s cheaper there. Yes, I do know where I got the garage chair from................ Oh, you want to know where I got it from. Right! I got it from my father in-law. Thanks, Guy! In fact, I have sixty gallons of windshield washer fluid in my garage now that I'll add to my rear tires to complete the ballasting project. I learned from my Moving a Building with a Compact Tractor video that even with a 650 lb rotary cutter on the back, the tractor can still tip. Trying to lift the corner of a 2,500 lb building can do that! Thanks for watching and commenting!

On another subject - I like how you use dolly’s to easily move attachments, etc, My challenge is need to move attachments on gravel or rougher terrain (not paved). Normal dolly wheels just don’t work. Any suggestions on a dolly with larger tires or...?
Rich, they make 6” double wheeled casters. If your gravel is not too thick, these might work. Also, they make large pneumatic tire casters which might work even better.
Awesome idea to put tubes in the concrete for tools.
Hello, your videos are really fun to watch. How did you provide a drain route for the pvc tubing should it get rained upon? Did I miss that somehow? I want to build one similar to yours.

Great DIY. I've seen terrible ground clearance with most of these boxes though. How much ground clearance do you get out of it?
Thanks, Brian! I haven’t measured it but I’ve never had a clearance issue with. The key is the location of the 3-point pins on the box. I’ve seen some ballast boxes with the pins so high up that the 3 point lift arms are half way up before getting to the pins, leaving little room to lift the box higher if needed. The pins on this box are at a good height IMO.
