Fumbles have another rule that the video doesn't mention. Any defender that recovers a fumble can advance it. For the offense this is also true except on 4th down, or inside the last 2 minutes of either half. If it's 4th down, or inside the last 2 minutes, then the offense can only advance its own fumble if the fumble is recovered by the player that fumbled. Otherwise the ball is dead at the spot of the fumble, or the spot of the recovery, whichever is more detrimental to the offense.

There are certain ways you can’t tackle. You can’t grab the back of their jersey and pull down. This is a horse collar tackle and can cause a lot of knee and leg injuries. You also can’t hit their helmet with your own, called helmet to helmet, or lead with the top of your helmet. This year they just made a new rule called a hip drop tackle which is going to be interesting. Essentially you can’t grab a player from behind and swing your legs to bring them down. It’s kind of vague and will probably be called inconsistently. Also, a player cannot make contact with a receiver trying to catch a ball until they touch the ball. If you touch them early, it’s called pass interference and the team gets the ball where the foul was committed and it goes back to first down. Other than that, you can pretty much tackle a player however you want. Back in the day there were less rules and you’d see some brutal hits that would be flagged today. If you watch a “biggest hits” compilation, many of those old tackles would now be penalties but were perfectly legal. They are trying to limit the amount of injuries, especially to the head.

This is a good crash-course on the rules of American football but, obviously, very surface-level. There is an incredible amount of pre-planning and strategizing for every play that an offense or defense runs. I've watched for over 20 years, and still discover surprising things about the sport to this day. It's a great, very strategic sport. People are turned off it because of stoppages, but that's what allows every play to be so meticulously designed to be effective against a defense that has been studying game film on your offense for the week leading up to the game in order to counter-act whatever play the offense may run. I hope you stick to it, because it is an incredibly fun and rewarding sport to watch when you understand what's going on and the strategy involved. Cheers!
