  • As of 7PM Thursday, it has been 72 hours since Darling had any food of substance. Jack has been seen - minimally. Still injured. Weather continues to be a challenge & food has been hard to come by.
"Update (6/13 @:9:15pm EST) I've talked to SCCF, which has also talked to CROW. I've also reached out to contacts at FL F&W, & USFWS. Here is what I was told.
    1. I was trying to keep the focus on human interference with Jack's injury. I was speculating fishing line, but we cannot confirm. We had a decent chance of getting permission, but that has now changed. Since Jack is doing better and bringing fish, Ding and Edie have eaten, I've been told it is unlikely that we will receive permission to intervene since this is just a reality of nature.
    2. Even if permission was given, Ding could accidentally get injured while trying to intervene for Darling (Osprey are less likely to jump than eagles, so this is not a hard no like it was with Lusa the bald eaglet).
    3. We are unable to leave fish for them as it is against state and federal law (This was a hard no).
    4. They are watching the cams and want us to keep in contact with them.
The plan & my thoughts: The weather looks better for tomorrow. Still some storms, but not as bad. In the morning, we will send a formal request for intervention. While we are unlikely to receive permission, we can at least try. If we get a yes, then intervention normally happens within 2 hours. If this was an obvious man-made issue, getting permission would be much easier. For example, the fishline removal earlier this season, the time between observing it and its removal took only a few hours. We will intervene if allowed. We do not want to lose any chicks, but nature can be cruel sometimes.
I'm cautiously optimistic about what tomorrow brings. Edie was seen catching and eating fish around 8pm on 6/13, but did not bring any back to the nest. Darling has a good chance of making it through the night. Darling ate a few scraps, but nothing of major caloric value. We are hoping for a better morning and a successful fledge of both Ding & Darling. Ding is doing just fine and out-competing Darling for what food has been brought to the nest.
We are doing as much as we are allowed to do without going to jail or getting crippling fines. :) Please be kind to our moderators and the community. This is a stressful time and we are all hoping for the best!
