  • Welcome to the Municipality of Makato, Aklan!
    "SkyAklan flyby"
    Historical Background:
Domicile of the Santo Niño and Ati-atihan Festival renowned throughout the province and a week ahead of Kalibo, Makato has been celebrating the “Mother of all Philippine Festivals” in admiration of the Holy Child. Established in the thirteenth century, the town’s name had been acquired by accident. Thinking that the Spaniards came to ask the route along the river, the native answered “Makato” which meant “that way”. The Spaniards recorded the name Makato in the year Eighteen Hundred (1800) thinking it was the name of the town. In 1901, the town was named after the then United States President, William Howard Taft. But in 1923, Representative Manuel Terencio of Capiz, authored a law restoring its former name.
Makato is one of the seventeen towns in Aklan. It has Eighteen (18) Barangays namely: Agbalogo, Aglucay, Alibagon, Bagong Barrio, Baybay, Cabatanga, Cajilo, Calimbajan, Calangcang, Castillo, Cayanwan, Dumga, Libang, Mantiguib, Poblacion, Tibiawan, Tina and Tugas. The municipality is located at the western portion of Aklan bounded in the north by the Sibuyan Sea; in the south by the mountainous terrains bordering the Lezo-Malinao municipalities; on the east by the Municipality of Numancia, and in the west by the Municipality of Tangalan. Makato is nine (9) kilometers away from Kalibo and fifty-four (54) kilometers away from the well-known Boracay Island. It is mainly an agricultural community, having Nine Thousand Six Hundred Thirty-Four (9,634) hectares total land area of which, Four Thousand Three Hundred Thirty-One (4,331) hectares is used for agriculture. Dumga, Calimbajan, Agbalogo, and Tibiawan river flows through the town, most portions of which are utilized as fish cages as well as fish ponds. Makato is abundant with crabs, tilapia, Lapu-Lapu, shrimps, prawns, and bangus. There had been twenty-three (23) claims of mineral resources including iron, magneto, retiles, laterite, and magnetic beach sand.
When fully developed, the municipality of Makato has two areas that would attract tourists, both local and foreign. There are Salimono Falls in Barangay Libang, about seven kilometers from Barangay Poblacion, and the Eng-Eng Falls, located in the upland Barangay of Bagong Barrio, thirty minutes’ drive plus thirty minutes trek through the mountains at an elevation about eighty feet and one hundred feet respectively.
