Japanese Aircraft Carriers: Who You Callin' Maru?

- This video is a 48 minute mic test about Japanese Carriers (read: submarine target practice). Note that this is far from an in-depth analysis of these ships and more just a general overview.

Sorry this took so long, and sorry that it is as long as it is. I severely underestimated how many of these things Japan had. In hindsight, this was a mistake, since now my doom has been sealed and the American carrier video is inevitable.
Also profuse apologies if I got anything blatantly wrong in this video, given its length its very likely that I did somewhere.

China - "that looks like an aircraft carrier, you can't have that"
Japan - "nuh-uh"

China - but it looks like an aircraft carrier
Japan - just like your reefs look like military base in South China Sea

China’s or Japan’s. Me I’d put my money on Japan. But I wonder
@@pracylopgonzer3176an actual engagement would depend on so many other factors, not just the carriers themselves, that it would degrade to pointless bickering about details. But I also put my money on Japan, for now.

Yeah, Akagi is named after a mountain, ALL of the AEGIS Destroyers are named after Mountains, who knows. Maybe they are naming the next ship 'Amagi' as well.
Come on Japan. I want to see a modern warship named 'Amagi' next of a floating dock or Maintenance/Repair Dock made by the scraps of Battlecruiser Amagi

"Certified Bureau of Ordnance moment" had me rolling.
There was a lot of that.
@@Isolder74 Right! There was one time an American submarine emptied its entire torpedo load on a Japanese ship and they were all duds. I’m surprised nobody in the ordnance bureau got court-marshaled over how bad the torpedoes were and worse, how they refused to look into the problem.
@@EyeOfMagnus4E201 Well until Admiral King showed up in their office. Sempter Iratus.
@@Isolder74at first they claimed “okay there were a few problems,” after Admiral King twisted their arm behind their back and had them on the ground. Admiral King, knowing the horrific systemic issues with the torpedoes twisted the flunkie’s arm even harder and threatened to break it which caused the flunky to go “OKAY OKAY, IT’S A TOTAL PIECE OF CRAP WE NEVER SHOULD HAVE ISSUED!”
At which point actual systemic changes were indeed made.
Even with the torpedo hiccups the Americans still sank a HUGE amount of tonnage... imagine how high those numbers would be if the torpedoes got sorted out quicker
Great video man!
Jeez never realized how unlucky Japan is with Carriers.
Things went to shit once the American subs got torpedoes that actually worked lmao

I'm honestly surprised the CNO didn't arrest BuOrd admin for willful criminal negligence. When told their equipment didn't work, by DOZENS of trained ship commanders, AND being given a couple workarounds, they demanded the courtmartial of the commanders who dared to question them.

Fun Fact: Who would like to know when the JSDMF will own a ship named Akagi. They have her, but now she's a patrol boat.
I’m sorry to let you know that you have been fuel very inaccurate information, as that is a lie, and the JSDF, as a matter of fact, have never owned a patrol vessel named Akagi.
@HappyGM-R Sorry mate but she exist. But you have true point that I have mistake info about her. She's not from JSDMF, but from Japan Coast Guard. Her full name is JSGS Akagi PS14.
The thing with Japanese light AA is that it is a cheap version of an already subpar AA gun. The 25mm had a shaky mount and also was abysmal in reload and in really every other aspect.
So they indeed needed that enormous amount to hope to be effective. Just imagine tho if that german uboat actually did give the Japanese the technical details on the German 2cm FlaK, could have made the Japanese AA go from "it supposed to work" to "ah its actually somewhat effective", still wont change a damned thing but yeah it is funny how bad their 25mil was which almost wants to make you pity them.
Another major problem the IJN had was there just wasn't a "medium-caliber" AA gun. It was basically the 25mm, then 4-in and 5-in guns, and that was it. If US planes got through the heavy stuff, and they probably would, there wasn't really anything to oppose them until after weapon drop. Basically every other navy had a 20ish-mm, then a 37mm or 40mm, then 105ish-mm and 127ish-mm guns, with a smattering of 75ish-mm and 90ish-mm guns around the different navies.
You know what's funnier? IJN have access to smaller but marginally better gun than the 25mm, their 20mm Type 99 which has a moveable mount they use in bomber turrets, and land installations and can be belt-fed... But for some obtuse reason they think a ww1 designed hotchkiss machine gun upscaled to 25mm can do better, when it can hardly track planes, vibrates like a jackhammer, a low rate of fire, and has 5 rounds of ammo in the magazine not helping the fire rate issue
At the beginning of this series I thought that carriers were lame because they invalidated battleships and big guns make brain go monke mode. But after watching all these videos I have realized aircraft carriers slap. I’m excited to see the future videos of this series if Spartan chooses to continue it.
Yeah I sunk 200+ British ships in Hearts Of Iron 4 with just carriers.
This is an impressive project. 10/10

Ships are given the suffix maru cuz they want the ships to come back port after encircling=completing their route and voyage, hence the maru=circle
lesson learned: the greatest enemy to the US submarines was the Bureau of Ordinance
Well it only makes things fair. The IJN's greatest enemy was the IJA after all.
And even despite being fucked with a length of razor wire by BuOrd, the American submarines still accounted for half of all Japanese tonnage sunk during the war.
Not just the subs, but the carrier air wings as well. The reason most of the ships attacked from the air were killed by bombs is because the air-launched torpedoes were just as bad, if not worse than the sea-launched ones.
Hello. I am Japanese and I am watching this video from Japan.
I have a lot of concerns about the capability of the Hyuga, Ise, Kaga and Izumo modern Japanese naval vessels as aircraft carriers.
Last month, the bow flight deck of the Kaga was heated by the jet thrust of an F35 raising its nose on take-off, causing part of the personnel fall barrier to melt off.
There are also questions about the storage space for aviation fuel, ammunition and spare parts and the number of maintenance crews to use them effectively, as well as the fact that the Japanese Maritime Self-Defence Force is extremely seriously short of sailors in the first place.
At present, I feel that it can only be used for air defence on a limited, small scale or at sea in place of a crash-landing airfield, such as the US Navy's F-35.
Some Japanese naval researchers are of the opinion that Japan should change its policy to building satellite-photographed suicide attack drone carriers, which are believed to be built by Communist China.
You sent me through a reading spree on unmanned naval aviation, it’s fascinating watching the rise of drones in navies, and I’d be intrigued if Japan listens to those researchers, suicide drones have been effective in recent conflicts.
They might augment the F35Bs with drones (in fact they are probably planning to right now), but they still need at least a few of the manned fighters. In terms of combat capabilities, the difference between cheap drones and an F35 is like the difference between a tuk-tuk and a power line repair truck. Also, suicide drones don’t have nearly enough range to be operated directly off of carrier decks, so they’d have to be carried to the target area by conventional aircraft.

A narrative masterpiece !
Well Hyūga-class is actually is direct replacement to Haruna-class Helicopter Destroyer, Hyūga-class is was originally replace Shirane-class Helicopter Destroyer until is instead go to replace of Haruna-class, while Shirane-class was later replace by Izumo-class

The Midway class technically is the longest serving carrier class in History with it only leaving service in 1992, but they aren’t Vintage World War II as the first midway was completed 8 days after Japan’s big “Not in japan’s favor” cope declaration.
love how he just doesn't talk about how the tower on Akagi was also on the Port Side
The "flying machines"/pseudo helicopters were autogyros (which haveunpowered rotors). They have low stall speed, and were used for ASW duties.
Taihou was near lucky one of the two torpedo was blocked by a brave pilot but yes the other hit her sealed her fate.
I'd argue her damage control failures sealed her fate, had those been better Taiho probably would've made it home. Not that it would've ultimately made a difference, but still

IJN carriers are food to USN Submarines
How could a scuttled ship have 700 casualties (soryu)? did they not wait till all crew were evacuated before giving the scuttle order??
They are probably counting the people who died before the ship was scuttled (fire, explosions, initial flooding, etc.).
You forgot Isa and Hyuga.
Do you see torpedo -boats- submarines?
