Freedom of '76 Master Class with Dean Ween

- (I've edited this to clarify a couple of things that have been brought to my attention. The first chord is a regular old E chord with a strange voicing, also, the other chords I'm referring to as Maj7s are actually Major 6th chords So moving along then....). Dean Ween teaches you to play "Freedom of '76" from Ween's 4th album "Chocolate and Cheese". Original backing tracks from the album featuring Claude Coleman on drums and Gene Ween on Bass Guitar. Play along with Ween---download the original backing tracks from the album at www.chocodog.com/chocodog/free...
I love how it's like, "My friend just showed me how to do these 7th chords." and then he writes an iconic song.
this man is so generous with his work. seriously.
I couldn't agree more. Such a big influence on my playing too. Easiest guy to cheer for in anything he ever does.
@@TEAMAGEPRODUCTIONS 'Easiest guy to cheer for in anything he ever does.' Fuckin so true...
so cool when an artist takes the time to do something like this.
besides making "curb your enthusiasm" I know!
I refuse to believe this only has 22k views. Do ppl not realize that Dean Ween is a guitar god?
dude you're generikb
B team baby
He actually got the names wrong for most of these chords 😂
☢ Rectoplasmic ☢ I love it.
Definitely!! Hard to be in love with someone who you will probably never meet😔
I don't think music gets any better than that Jane Pratt show performance they did. that sweet mustang sound and Gene beltin' his notes out...I think I may have cried watchin' it. Just let's me know there's still GOOD in the world.
Went in thinking that performance was going to be bad and it gave me chills. Watched it over and over
Dude I seriously prefer that version over the album recording
Jane Pratt cracks me up!
You could tell they were tired of answering that bitches questions lol
Dean was playing a modified Musicmaster, not a Mustang, for that performance. They're very close, of course. He has a Hot Rails pickup in the bridge.
I love the tension between that talk show audience, the host, and the band.
The guy is literally one with the instrument. He speaks through it. And humble as f-k. Unreal. AND, he does it all with own bare hands.
No shit he plays with his bare hands? I get what you’re trying to say but every guitar player ever played w their bare hands lol
The fact he gets practically all the chord names wrong just makes me respect him more... He doesn't have time for all the music theory bullshit, he just knows what sounds good.
One of the best, man

I love Ween and Deaner RULES!
Having said that, I’m also a guitar teacher so I just have to point out that:
“EMaj7” is just *E*
“AMaj7” is actually *A6*
“CMaj7” is *C6*
“DMaj7 is *D6*
“Esus” is *A/E*
The second to last chord is *Bbdim*
“B7b9” is *B7#9*
He gets nearly all the chord names wrong but I don’t hold it against him because The Beatles and Hendrix used all those same chords but didn’t know what they were called either, so he’s in good company.
Appreciate you pointing all this out! I caught the misnaming of AMaj6 and was wondering if I was just not comprehending which frets he was playing or if he called it the wrong chord name.
Such a joyful, groovy progression. I could listen to this version all damn day. Thank you, Deaner.
I love the joy on Deaner's face while playing this, but my fave is "hu hu, interlude"
i don’t even know how to play guitar but watching your hero teach how to play a song on it is pretty mesmerizing
Best way to learn this song.from the man himself
damn that guitar is sick with sweet tone
0:59 Fender Jazz Master
Deaner teaching Freedom of 76 in a Phillies tee is just perfection lol
Totally agreed...seems like such an awesome guy whose regular-dudeness belies his incredible rock goditude
Those are some very ween words
So many memories of cruising around in my car on cold winter nights in 1995-1996, playin this album on the tape deck.
What makes WEEN spectacular? The fact that they are natural talents. I know this is a technical vid, but all said and done, Ween is just magic.
Learning this on my Squier Mascis Jazzmaster from the man himself is just amazing. Thanks Deaner!
Thanks for taking the time to do this. It's good to hear from you!
Really appreciating this video, and chord fingerings/charts. Dean is a tremendously great guitar player/song writer. As it turns out, the fingering provided for the "A7th", is actually an A6th chord, the same rings true for the C6, and D6, chords. Whereas the B7, and C#7, are actual 7th, chords. There it is there... hope I don't seem like too big a "Weener", but these alternating dripping chord patterns spell out "76'.how quaint. Thanks Dean!
Ive just as of late...ahhh, yesterday, been turned onto this dude and the live show I watched was completely fkin amazing!! I'm sold on this guys talents 100%!
I never realized that chord progression goes throughout the whole song & I've probably listened to it a thousand times!
That's cool but can I learn how to sing like Gene?
Geoffrey Zoref Helium and Nitrous
Try to be gener
this whole comment reply section has tied gene to a car and dragged him down a dirt road
There’s a vocal coach in Browntown that I know...
lots of zoloft, pork rolls, eggs and cheese
Thanks micki...you're awesome for doing this..I'm sure the requests are endlesss
I love how he takes a drag during the interlude, sounds like a Deaner thing to do
These chords are so great, I love playing this song! Thanks Mickey!
great video and made somehow even cooler with the addition of the backing track! long live ween
Nice Phillies shirt! Always love the faces Dean makes. I cracked up watching him play live, in a good way of course. It was great to see Ween in Denver a few years back and they played this!
Deaner, you ARE an absolute Master Class
Thanks, Dean. Merry Christmas.
Learned it just now, thank you Deaner!!!
so nostalgic right now
Seeing WEEN as the DYNAMIC DUO back in PHILLY and Jersey was sure some HIGH POINTS in my life . 2 dudes working the crowd like kings
Not only a very intelligent musician, Mickey was a darn good athlete in hockey
thanks for making this channel deaner, i really appreciate shit like this.
Really helpful. Not the person I thought would be teaching me this song when I searched. Thanks so much.
5:49 that's how you know you're getting the full experience
I've wanted to know the exact way to play this for a long time. Thanks a lot, Mickey!
Not that it really matters, as Dean tells you exactly where to put your fingers, but...
The first chord is actually just a E major chord. It's just a very strange and cool voicing.
And the Amaj7, Cmaj7 and Dmaj7 are Amaj6 Cmaj6 and Dmaj6. This makes sense as they are thought to be interchangable in jazz. The 6th are thought to be smoother.
Big thanks for helping me get the song…now if only I could get the tone…so nice.
This is great Deaner! Could you maybe do Tear for eddie or buckingham green in the future? Long live WEEN!!
This is awesome, thanks for posting Deaner!
Never thought I could play this song. Hello from France!
This is awesome! Thanks Deaner! Hope you do more of these. I'd love to see "Mutilated Lips" as well.
I love that the chord sheet is crumpled. The chords themselves are brilliant.
Not only that but you can hire Mickey to take you on fishing trips. How cool is that?
Very cool deaner! Saw you guys on The Mollusk tour at the Fox in ATL in '00. Yall rocked it 👍LL Ween!!
This is gold. Thank you!!
thank you dude. About a million times better than ultimate guitar.
I'm so happy he's playing with just the drums. So cool he can still just pull up those drums real quick. Awesome. (Not playing with the full song if yah get me)
Seeing Dean play a jazz master is wild
It's already been said, but the actual progression is: E - F#m7 - G#m7 - A6 - C6 - B7 - D6 - C#7 - A/E -> E - (A - A# walk) - B7#9
Absolutely the coolest dude in music
Absolutely. I've tried it many ways. I'm just saying it's different from jazz. Such as the dominant chords where he uses 3 fingers. If you played without a pick you'd only need 2. A lot of it is the fact that he's using a pick. It's lower and crunchier than most jazz and that's great. In terms of the progression it couldn't be more jazz-like, especially at the end. There's a lot of chromatic movement.
like....who does this? I'm OBSESSED Dean Ween. He always said he was "more accessible" than Gene Ween. this vid is an obvious example. what a doll!!!
thanks deaner, this was fun to learn
This is a great video, I hope you make more of these! As someone else mentioned, a Mutilated Lips video would be great. I've tried to learn the song but parts of it still trick me up.
this is the best thing ever
Holy shit, this song has lotsa chords, don't it? Love the jazzy feel. I'm _so_ learning this to play at open mic...
Thank you Deaner for this lesson. Nice to know there are still musicians with musical education and knowledge of the fret board. Could you make a video of your favorite solo licks?! That would be awesome. I've learned a few by listening but some instruction would be totes appreciated! :)
Agreed, but if you play these chords with different voicings it doesn't sound nearly as cool. Try it and see what I mean!)
i was exactly the same when i learned some maj 6..i don't really understand scales and chords but remember the shapes of chords and licks more and how they sound (with a load of wrong notes as i try an find the one i'm after).. great song man and thanks fer all the music as the brother and sister incest style pop/rock group abba once said!
Yea that's A6 and C6, not major 7. Also, it's a B7#9, not a B7b9. What a fantastic song, love you Deaner!
Why are people giving this a thumbs down... the world may never know
Deaner is the man. Thanks Mickey!
This is missing the sweet soft sultry voice of gene.this was an instant classic when this album dropped.
It's so weird Dean without his Stratocaster
Nice guitar, Deaner!
love it. thanks for sharing this!
Would have loved to hear that old Kay amp used. Still awesome. Thanks.
You are everything.
Time to pull this progression out in frobt of my friends and forget it in month just to relearn it again from this video 3 years later
Love this song and love playing it. There's something really satisfying about those chords, actually - I like that they're not just standard barre chords. Pretty hard to sing as good as the original, though! Thank you for putting this up. Would you consider doing the same for Daisies? That song has some interesting chords as well.
Deaner you are the man!
Señor Dean! Doodmang, u nailed it, again n again, chocolate n cheese all day erryday holmes, thanks for showing us how to get to Browntown. One day I will graduate from BTU, Brown Town University. Long live the Weeners!
I mean I know he probably has a bit of an ego but he just comes off so chill. He doesn't need to strut cause he knows he can play
Absolutely beautiful Jazzmaster.. got damn
Deaner is one of the coolest dude's on the planet.
Thanks for the backing track
Thanks mick.think I got it.great way to practice some new voiceings in time with the backing track
I really love that man
Thank you Deaner for showing me how to play Freedom of 76 the right way and for sharing your Sunday sauce recipe. 🍝
I cant believe you reminded me of that, it's been years since I made it
Ween. Pleeease come to Toronto, Ontario. We love Ween in Canada
Thanks for the chords Deaner!
Thank you for doing this! So much fun. I've always wanted to learn it. Mutilated Lips next!
Songs a masterpiece
I get the impression that Gene was sitting on the back porch on an especially cool summer day, and wrote this with an ole bass he found in an attic. Dean heard it from the next room, and just "FELT IT''.
How do you get such great audio on your video recordings?
nice joint at the end. thanks for the lesson man
It's insane to me that someone this good at guitar doesn't actually know any of the correct chord names. Wild.
I play guitar. I was born in 76. I Love Ween. Coincidence? I think ... maybe, because I can't play this. Dammit. Damn you Mickey.
If you're ever in Oklahoma and want to do some fishing, Mickey, it's pretty good here.
The proper name for the a maj7(if ween says it thats what its called,)the notes are root,6th,maj4th,5th. so its a A6(technically). this video awesome. amaj7 a good chord to learn thanks.
Much appreciated Mikey!
i have NO fuckin idea WTF you said, i just like seeing deaner. so underrated.
Thanks Deaner! Greetings from Hamburg, Germany!!!
So good
hey mickey. thanks for this! your the man bud, keep on doin what ur doin
Great vid , thanks for it man! Also THAT MY DREAM GUITAR!!!!!!!!!
This is awesome. I just read the 33 1/3 book and I was going to try and find a tab for this song so I could learn me some sweet jazz chords. This is way better. Some more master classes would be fabulous! How about something from Quebec, like say The Argus or If You Could Save Yourself? :) :)
Deaner says that book is nonsense
