We do want them destroyed, at least the Russians in Ukraine, and they should not exist in a manner where they can threaten anyone, anywhere. They need to have many independent states, but no nukes, they are too irresponsible.
I believe Russia will continue much as it is, the West has not provided real help to Ukraine, and the sanctions are very soft. Biden is a very poor leader who is fooled by Putin.

I visited Russia in the 1990's, when it looked like we could look forward to having an open and friendly relationship....until the oligarchs, and that little lunatic, took over, and made life difficult for everyone.... I'm an American and I can assure you that the vast majority of the people living here and most leaders have zero desire to invade Russia and loot your country. Many of us would prefer a good relationship with you and have trade that benefits both our economies. I, personally would love to visit your country some day and experience your culture and interact with the people there because there is a great history there. I'd like for the citizens there to be able to speak their minds and elect leaders they feel with bring prosperity to the country without living in fear of expressing their views or worry about their safety if they choose not to elect certain individuals. I'm only one American, but I can confidently say that at least when this type of content comes up in conversation with people I associate with, none of us want conflict with Russia, and none of us want to destroy your country. So, take that for what it is worth.

any of our troops or weapons there. However, we believe strongly that it is wrong to send troops into a neighbor's country. No one here wants anything from Russia except for them to stay in their own borders and live peacefully. It is baffling to me that so many of the folks you interview think we have something against Russia. We love our peace and freedom in this country. I can speak my mind here. Our government, although bloated, still answers to the people, not the other way around. We wish only the best for all countries. That in itself doesn’t sound very democratic or spells real freedom, at least not to me. And what about the pandemic, the lock downs? What about the vaccinations that were pushed on to us and many people got really sick afterwards? Who made money out of all this? With the West it’s all about money not the people. It’s at best fake democracy, fake freedom.

Unfortunately, Russians do not know their own history. In the period 1891-1893, the only country in the world that helped the Russian Empire with food shortages was the United States. Even the great Russian artist Ivan Aivazovsky has two paintings on this theme. In 1922-1923, the same thing happened - the US was the only country that helped Russia with food shortages and thus saved 10 million from starvation. The entire industrial base in the USSR was created with the help of the USA, and in World War II the Lend Lease program helped the USSR win the war. After the collapse of the USSR, there was a shortage of food and medicine. And who is this country providing $50 billion in "Providing hope" program? USA, of course. Today, many Russians see China as their closest friend. Well, I have some very bad news for the Russians - China has no friends. China has either vassals or enemies.

Would be interesting if the interviewer followed up the same way. I would guess that most of the people interviewed here when talking about "America" mean the state not the people. Not saying they're right or well-informed, but people commenting in this thread as if what an average American thinks has any bearing on imperial policy are just as deluded. Average American didn't give a crap about Afghanistan, Libya, Yemen, or Syria either. Completely irrelevant to whether the foreign policy establishment has designs abroad or not

@@urbanurchin5930 Well, also in the "West" we tend to forget to tell that Japan was under blockade, trying tpo starve the Japanese war effort in Asia. So the attack on Pearl Harbor was a completely logical attack from a war-waging megalomaniac imperialistic military regime ruling Japan at that time. The US just were to self confident, and also applied their own logic, instead of trying to think like the opponent. That's how the US was caught off guard in Pearl Harbor. So teaching "the whole story" isn't a strong point in a lot of western schools either.
So the story can be told in another way, from a Japanese view. And it is. Japanese are extremely aware that the root core of the problem, was having a military almost dictatorship ruling Japan, with delusional imperialistic ideas of ruling the rest of South East Asia. (As if Japan seriously could congquer China?!? That was never going to happen.)
Hence Japan up untill lately, has been so extremely pacifist and weary of any kind of military, and guarding democracy, that it has taken decades for the western democracy's to convince the Japanes people and government to step up militarily.
Incidentally, pretty much eactly the same goes for Germany. And in both countries, arguing for larger military budgets has not been a winner in any elections. Only lately, with China's and Russia's agressive behaviour, has public opinion shifted somewhat. Unwillingly.

In addition, remember that Japan defeated the mighty Russian Empire in 1905.

There are in excess of 180 ethnic groups in Russia today. No changes?
To dispel your claim, the architects of the Soviet Union were worried that unchecked Russian nationalism would wreck havoc in the new communist state so they created a 'Soviet' culture. It was manifest in the political system with very few 'Russians' ever becoming the leader of the USSR.

I as a Spaniard don't dream about Russian resources at all and we have almost none. I also don't think about NATO 99% of my days. The economy and free markets work differently. For example, Argentina and Congo are big, have vast resources and still their population is poor, same as Russia compared to its wealth. On the other hand, you see The Netherlands, a small half-submerged country in the sea, with 0 resources and they are capable of having an outstanding wealth. Actually, I believe that having natural resources plays a negative role at the end to some countries.

With the power that they hold they seem are either corrupt before they get into office, or become corrupted while in office... At any rate their corruption grows. Money also corrupts. Then they lie about, threaten others, possibly manipulate the voting process, or elliminate their rivals. I think that Bernie Saunders got screwed . Possibly Trump would have never gotten into office. What is going on in the U.S.A. right now is ungodly in the so called leadership department in Washington. There is no logic behind it. These people that we see here are wonderful, in Russia. I agree about what you said. I have a number of ideas. One really harsh one is that all world leaders and their mediators must find a way to create peace. Any country rivaling with another must make peace together. Otherwise top leaders and those directly involved in communicating peace would fail and be exicuted. I mean leaders from all countries involved. Horrific? How horrific is it to send beloved strangers off to die or to be destroyed in other ways during and after war? It effects the whole planet. It is better to lose a small number of people who don't want peace badly enough to fix it. If they cannot handle a position they should not accept it. It never ceases to amaze me what Russians believe they "know" about American history -- Philippines, Libya, really? They bring up some aspects of history, which Americans have rarely ever heard of or don't exactly think of frequently.

    • @Moamanly

To be fair, most Americans don't seem to know much about American history either.
I mean, how many of the 105 wars/rebellions USA has been involved in (in its relatively short history) do you think about "frequently"?
Every country has its own perspectives. Russians have been fed a diet of their very own version of Fox News for the last decade or two--it should be easy for an American to imagine how damaging that could be!

Primarily fossil fuels, of course. Beyond that, it's assumed that Russia has minerals and timber. Some assume there are rare earth minerals that may or may not actually be there.
It's a propaganda ruse regardless. The US moved towards energy independence after the Iraq war because citizens of both parties demanded it. The US is far less reliant even on Middle East oil than previously. As for the other materials not available in the US, there's already longstanding trading relationships with suppliers that have a long history of friendlier relations with the US.
It's just a Russian xenophobic conspiracy theory. China has more need for Russian resources than the US. Far more.
