Making a Recurve "Cyclop" Bow (I FAILED)- Traditonal Woodworking
Вставка
- Опубліковано 26 вер 2024
- An attempt at bulding a recurve "Cyclop" bow from red oak wood. The knot I decided to use to make a hole, seemed to be more fitting for that purpose before I removed sapwood from the back of the stave. Nevertheless I decided to give it a try. The bow has broken at first stringing attempt.
I decided to share this video with you anyway, to show you that not each of my projects ends up with a functional bow. Failures like this are inherent part of the bowyer's craft - it's about learning the lesson and improving with each bow built or broken. Thanks for watching!

I didn't manage to finish this bow, but I decided to share this video with you anyway, to show you that not each of my projects ends up with a functional bow. Failures like this are inherent part of the bowyer's craft - it's about learning the lesson and improving with each bow built or broken. Thanks for watching!
Im sure glad you did! New people need to realize stuff like this is common even for experienced builders.
Thank you! I haven't made my first bow yet. I'm glad you've shared this so I know what to expect 😂
It's educational to see what causes failure too. So nice video!
It's quite unique and educational to show a bow that didn't work, thank you for this one in particular!
🙏🙏🙏
I really do appreciate all the hard work you put in to trying to make this for me!!! You're awesome at what you do!!!
You’ve been a huge inspiration to me and this video is very assuring because I’ve broken far more bows than I’ve completed
Good for you for challenging yourself with this design and staying humble. You do awesome work my man!
I could watch you make bows all day! 😏😅 You are beyond skilled 🙌🏽🙌🏽
I bought your book and it’s been so helpful throughout my bow making journey 🫶🏽 Thank you 🖤
Thank you so much!
I am learning a lot from your videos, i am failing really bad to build my first bow
My condolences to the bow, great video and thank you for sharing even the fails. It doesn't deter me from wanting to make bows, and it makes the successful bows that much more inspiring.
Glad you enjoyed it in spite of the result 👊 Thank you for the comment!
Thanks for showing a now that didn’t work it makes me feel better knowing even pros don’t succeed I was loosing motivation since I don’t have many working bows
I would keep the broken pieces cause they are so precious and so much loving work went in. They are still pristine sculptures and work of art, a long lost cultural ancestral heritage. If we could only learn these types of valueable indigenous skills at school our world and heart to heart relationships and communion overall would improve. 🌳🌱💗
I loved this bow already! Well said my friend I totally agree with you 👊
Really really nice video bro
🏆✨🪶✨amazing work thank you for sharing. The power of stean
Glad you like it 👊
This video was both satisfying and painful
Indeed 👊
Great video as always, sad it didn’t work out but we’re always learning.
I was wondering, what’s the material you use for the string rests (around 5:20)? It looks like some kind of stone?
Brother how long do you let the wood to steam before you put it in the form?
Approx 30 minutes but it depends on the wood thickness
Спасибо
👊👊
Can I ask a question.
Im not trying to be confrontational just want to know what the reason to make this bow out of 1 piece of wood and not make it out of 2 pieces of wood and a centre piece made out of either the same would or a different material.
From my perspective I would have thought that it would disperse the weight more equally making it stronger and possible not to break.
Edit:
I just watched your other video from 8 months ago of you making a cyclops bow so I was wondering why did this one break?
Is it made from a different wood or was the wood not aged enough?
Just want to know the reason.
I think that the walls of the eye were just made too thin, resulting in too much stres i that area and snapping. (Similar to a hinge in a tiller that doesn't bend🤔 and than snaps )
The previous ones were better balanced - there was more wood around the hole so it could deal with the stress better. On this one I removed too much material from the hole area so it lead to the failure.
What is the reason to make the hole? Better aiming?
I’ve done this a few times now.
It's always painful 👊
Pozdrawiam i powodzenia!
Qual madeira e usada?
Thanks for sharing your beautiful work, I love how your bows come out all the time. What kind of wood stave is that you're working with??
Шкода праці та часу😢
😂
You didn't even get it on video
