WAE'S ME FOR PRINCE CHARLIE A wee bird cam' tae oor ha' door, and o but he sang sweetly and aye the owercam' o' his song Was "Wae's me for Prince Charlie" And when I heard the bonnie bonnie bird the tears cam' droppin' rarely I took the bonnet frae my heid, For weel I lov'd Prince Charlie Says I, my bird, my bonnie bonnie bird, is that a song you've borrowed Or are they some words you've learnt by heart, a lilt o' dule and sorrow? Oh no, oh no, the wee bird cried, I've flown since morning early But such a day of wind and rain, O wae's me for Prince Charlie On hills that are by right his ain he roams, a lonely stranger, On every side he's pressed by want, on every side is danger Yestreen I met him in the glen, my hert maist bursted fairly For greatly changed indeed was he, O wae's me for Prince Charlie But then the bird saw some red-coats And he shook his wings wi' anger "O this is no' the land for me, I'll tarry here nae longer" I saw him hover on the wing Ere he departed fairly But weel I mind the fareweel strain, was "Wae's me for Prince Charlie"
I was reading Lyn McDonald's "1915" recently and one of the accounts talks about how a HIghland regiment was playing Scottish songs for English soldiers in another regiment. One of them wanted to hear "Where's Me Fourpence Charlie?", which baffled all the Scotsmen until someone figured out he meant "Wae's Me For Prince Charlie". Thought that was funny.
Beautiful tune, I came across a reference to this song in a book about WW1. Thank you Alba for adding another tune to my playlist, Greetings from Thiobrad Arainn Theas.
I did post. Don't know what happened. Maybe UA-cam doesn't allow links in the comments? Anyway, here it is again (in a separate comment). If you don't see it, tell me and I'll look for another way to get it to you.
WAE'S ME FOR PRINCE CHARLIE
A wee bird cam' tae oor ha' door,
and o but he sang sweetly
and aye the owercam' o' his song
Was "Wae's me for Prince Charlie"
And when I heard the bonnie bonnie bird
the tears cam' droppin' rarely
I took the bonnet frae my heid,
For weel I lov'd Prince Charlie
Says I, my bird, my bonnie bonnie bird,
is that a song you've borrowed
Or are they some words you've learnt by heart,
a lilt o' dule and sorrow?
Oh no, oh no, the wee bird cried,
I've flown since morning early
But such a day of wind and rain,
O wae's me for Prince Charlie
On hills that are by right his ain
he roams, a lonely stranger,
On every side he's pressed by want,
on every side is danger
Yestreen I met him in the glen,
my hert maist bursted fairly
For greatly changed indeed was he,
O wae's me for Prince Charlie
But then the bird saw some red-coats
And he shook his wings wi' anger
"O this is no' the land for me,
I'll tarry here nae longer"
I saw him hover on the wing
Ere he departed fairly
But weel I mind the fareweel strain,
was "Wae's me for Prince Charlie"
I've loved this song since the instant I first heard it. Thank you!

what a gem. right up there with the skye boat song by the corries
The music comes from a 16th century scottish lute air called "Sueit Smyling Katie Loves Me"
