99% of the albums rated were accurate ratings. The ones that were called into questioned was the Made Men's album & Kurupt's Kuruption album. Kurupt got 4.5 mics bc Dave Mays' friend produced a track called "5 mics" which led to Dave giving him the rating after Elliot Wilson gave it 3.5 mics. The fallout from that was Elliot & other writers walking out in 1998.
It made me realize how unsettled I still am about what became of that magazine. I was serving in the 101st Airborne at the time (stateside), when they were at their highest heights. They guided us through the PX and local malls, told us what tapes and CD’s to buy, and curated all the mixtapes we rode four-deep to on the weekends. (I personally made two or three complete “Fat Tapes,” so I eventually had a huge collection, which led to DJ’ing and producing, but that’s another story.) It was something a lot of soldiers looked forward to, stateside AND overseas, until I opened it one day, and couldn’t relate to it at all. I feel like he took it away from me. I’m still kinda salty about it.

I haven't heard one thing about how his participation in the Source transformed the magazine into this huge juggernaut. It might be time for a real documentary on The Source so the record can be set straight.

There was a 7 month period between the staff walkout and when the two of the four owners sold their equity. Some revenue was lost but the mag was operating in the black with no full time staff and a growing circulation. Dave Mays was floated money to bolster operating expenses but it didn’t come Benzino.
