  • We used to put the garden " to bed" for the winter. Roses neatly pruned and unsightly brown herbaceous plants cut down. But now, with mild winters, the autumn pruning encourages new growth. This then is at danger from sudden hard frost. Leaving the growth alone gives the rose the chance to produce mature growth lower down which can withstand extreme cold. Of course this leaves things looking untidy !

    Thank you, very interesting information. We actually had very severe flooding in Italy about 10 days ago in the northern regions and mostly in Emilia Romagna and Toscana.😊
