    Hey! Thank you for making this video. I am majoring in HSA and I haven't found many videos of people who are Health Care Managers/ Administrators. I used to major in Nursing and I changed to Health Service Administration. Before, I was so enthusiastic in watching UA-cam videos of nurses-- but after I switched it was hard for me to find UA-cam creators like you talking about HSA. Love it!

There definitely are not as many videos about this major/ career field and this helps so much and assures me that I am not alone! Thank you for posting this video! Prior I was a nursing assistant for around a year but now I am currently a nurse and honestly after working bedside for over a year, 2 jobs, I realize that I just can't. I don't feel like nurses are constantly understaffed, inadequate resources, etc. This just makes the job harder and in turn makes it bad for the patients. I truly feel like bedside nursing is going to be an issue in the incoming years because many new nurses coming in realize that it's not what they expected it to be. I want to do something behind the scenes, help hospitals or clinics get better, develop good policies, etc. I didn't realize you could do so much with a public health degree. Thank you for the video!

    I really enjoyed hearing more about your background, and what hospital administration actually is! This truly sounds so interesting, I know that you must put in very hard work to come as far as you have so congratulations!! I study business and I feel like it’s a lottttt but I could only imagine if I would’ve chosen a degree in or anywhere near the medical field. You are also totally right that we definitely did not know what we wanted to do with our lives at 18, and it’s kind of ironic and unfortunate that literally during your senior year they want you to choose your pathway and what you’re going to do for the rest of your life. You’re precious 💓

      Hi! I am set to start a M.S. in Health Management in September! I opted for a one year degree abroad (less time in school and way less expensive!) How do you feel about the stigma of non-clinical workers holding management positions in hospitals? I know nurses/doctor's are not very happy with finance and budgets being at the forefront of health administrators minds and not patient satisfaction. It's something I have struggled with and the reason why I don't necessarily want to work in a hospital/private practice. Also, have you ever though of health informatics, consulting, medical devices, or project management? I'm currently debating all four! This was long but you were right in that there are not many videos of people discussing this career path, thank you!!

    I graduated with my MHA in 2015. It does give you a wealth of knowledge that you can use in your health care career whether you get an administrator role or decide to do clinical work. I will say that getting an administrative job will be slightly difficult after you get out of school if you don't have any experience working in any administrative roles in any industry or don't have experience working in a health care setting. I recommend that while you are pursing you're degree or before you start, apply for entry level jobs that will make you competitive for the job you want after you graduate. You can also have transferable skills from a different industry that will help in getting the job.
    I am currently lab tech/CRC in research lab.

    Thank you for sharing. I also started with pre med. Then, 2 years in I realized that direct care is not the best fit for me. So, I decided to get my B.S. in Long-Term Care Administration. I am now a licensed nursing home administrator. This is a six-figure career from the start, but nursing homes are just not on the same level as hospitals, which is exactly why I’m also planning on getting my MHA. I hope this will lead to a fellowship at a hospital. The administrative side of healthcare is a lot more rewarding than people think. I once had a resident (at a nursing home) thank me for making her life better, this made me realize that the 60+ hours a week and the intense pressure is worth it. Anyways, I just wanted to share because it seemed like we are both very similar. Good luck in your future!

    Thank you for your video! I am a sophomore in college and was studying nursing and about to apply to the program. However, I also work as a CNA and realized that the high-stress, high-error potential nature of the job was not a good fit for me, as well as realizing that working 12-16 hour shifts on my feet can actually be pretty tough on the body. So I decided to switch to getting a degree in Public Health. My question is, if I get a Bachelor's in Public Health, will that be enough education to be able to work in a hospital administration type of job? What kind of jobs would I be able to get with a Bachelors in Public Health?

    • @KristaCannady
      @KristaCannady  3 роки тому +2

      Thank you so much for sharing!! CNA work is so tough. You definitely can get an entry level job with a public health degree, but advancing would definitely be more difficult. You can always start that way and then if you want to get an advanced degree later you can!

    • @jennykerekes5105
      @jennykerekes5105 2 роки тому

      Working as a CNA is in no way shape or form comprable to working as an RMA, RN, or a Physician. All 4 are very different. CNAs are extremely hands on and work more with the patients hygiene and quality of their day to day lives. Just making them comfortable and keeping them fed and clean, playing games with them doing puzzles, I dont believe CNAs pass meds either but also changing out cath bags, changing bedding, bed pans, wheelchair transfers, etc. I personally have no problem touching patients but my field allows for regular 8 to 9 hour days M-F, and basically servicing the physician just as much as the patients. I hope you go on to find your dream position though and glad to see young people on here looking at options at such a young age! I just feel like people are constantly comparing CNAs with nurses and MA's and its just absolutely so inaccurate....its mind boggling. Follow a CNA all day, and follow a Nurse or MA. What you are actually doing throughout any given day is completely different. The scope of practice for each is night and day. For whatever reason, CNAs seem to find this offensive I think and I dont know why. If anything its a testament to how hard they work and not only that, CNAs are typically losing their patients whom they have hrown very close with because they soend so much time with each individual every day, and its devastating, so my hat eternally goes off to every CNA out there because the level of strength walking into work every day wondering if Marie, in room 216, the one who loves sweet tea and werthers, greeted you every day with a huge smile but would get grumpy if she missed her soaps but its okay because you planned to surprise her with her favorite meal tomorrow......etc....well you walk into work tomorrow and the only thing left is a set of fresh linens, the smell of clorox and a single werthers wrapper in the bottom of an empty bin. There is no job thats more difficult i dont feel like.

      Omg I got my BS in Kinesiology also pre-pt and I absolutely do not want to do DPT school. Did you have any relevant experience when you applied for the MHA program?

    Very close to finishing my BS degree in sociology with a concentration in social work. I realize now (after being exposed to real-life cases) that I don't want to be a social worker. I knew I would have to witness/be a part of some very traumatic cases but what I didnt realize was that I would bring the emotions home and my husband and kids would feel it too. So I've been exploring master's degrees and this is one of them. It'll be my 2nd career (I'm a bit older) so I don't have a lot of time (or money). That being said, I'm looking at WGU's Healthcare Management degree. The cost is very much within my reach. Just wondering how respected the degree is in the field.
