There is an easier solution. Follow the y=mx+b, so put 2y where the y is. Then move the 4x to the other side and change the sign to the opposite (e.g. 4x ➡️ -4x). After that, put the correct sign for the b, in this case we have positive 7 So 4x+2y=7 ➡️ 2y=-4+7. Then divide 2 from all the numbers so 2y divided by 2= y. -4x divided by 2= -2x and 7 divided by 2= 3.5 or 7/2. So now we have 2y=-4x+7 ➡️ y=-2x+3.5(7/2). I hope I explained it in an easy to understand manner. Have a nice day.
so what if my problem is like 3835-1.03=0.805 how do i solve for that
3835-1.03 isn't 0.805
My math book says count out the run before the rise in slope.

i have a question if we do the dividing and we get a decimal does that mean i did something wrong or would i simplify it into a fraction
That is great question. Just because you get a fraction does not mean it's incorrect. As a matter of fact, a lot of times you will get a fraction and that's ok. That helps when graphing it because that's your rise/run anyway 😊 I personally like to just leave it as a simplified fraction and not a decimal. Hope that helps!

Why is the 4 positive in the equation, but negative when subtracting?

When you subtract 4x on both sides, the sign will become negative on the right side because there are no like terms I can subtract it from. So in this case, subtracting 4x and having a -4x is pretty much the same thing (on the right side). Hope that helps! 🙂
What grade is this usually covered in? I got behind so my main priority is trying to figure out if my teacher is actually teaching me the right curriculum because I was on set to take college classes but now I’m not.

Hey Sayyed, thank you for your question. In the form y = mx + b, m = slope and b = y-intercept. Therefore, in this example, slope = -2 and y-intercept = 7/2 or 3.5. Hope that helps 🙂

Remember that x is just a number you don't know the value to, so it works just like any other number. If I asked you: how much is 3 - 3? The answer is 0, right?
Well, it's no different than 4x - 4x. Any number minus itself is equal to 0.

You dont actually subtract them, you just write in there

In the example that's 4x+2y=7 you want y to be by itself with nothing next to it, because there's 4x on that side, we want there to be no x's on the left, and 4x-4x=0 just like how 4-4=0.
But now we have to subtract on both sides too for everything to be equal, so on the right we have 0-4x which is -4x. Subtracting 4x from each side therefore leaves us with 2y=7-4x (you can write 7-4x or -4x+7, it's exactly the same).
It still looks like 2y= but we want it to look like y= so now we want to divide by 2. So everything is now y=7/2-2x (you could write 7/2 as 3.5, but you can just leave it like that)
