Taisun 20000 MT Crane

When Mr Brian Chang bought the small Yantai shipyard in 1994 and announced his vision of turning this humble shipyard at the end of a dirt road in a small town in China into a world renowned offshore construction shipyard, he never imagined that in such a short time he would realize this vision by building the World's Largest Crane, with 20,000 MT lifting capacity. By 2006, Yantai Raffles Shipyard had firmly proved itself as a world renowned shipyard, securing approximately 30% market share in new build semi-submersible drilling rigs. The year 2008 marked a new significant milestone in the history of shipbuilding. The launch of 'Taisun', silenced the non-believers by crushing the world's heaviest lift record with an incomprehensible 20,133 MT.
Taisun, named after the Shandong Mountain, is suitably an impressive figure. It towers into the sky like a sky scraper. It can lift the equivalent of half the population of Oslo in Noway and it is taller than London's Big Ben. Standing at 122 m tall with a lifting capacity of 20,000 MT, it has revolutionized the way large offshore vessels are being constructed. The 20,000 MT Crane "Taisun" spans the full 120 m width of the Dry dock, which is 380 m long. The maximum lifting height is 80 m above the dock floor making it one of the biggest technological breakthroughs in shipbuilding history.
"Taisun" makes offshore module construction possible at construction yards with lesser facilities, increasing the number of yards available for owners and operators whilst increasing the market for construction yards. Offshore modules such as deckboxes, FPSO topsides and accommodation modules up to 20,000 MT can now be fully constructed, outfitted, completed and commissioned before installation on board the hull by "Taisun". Saving over 2 million man hours, the costs savings and complexity of the operation is reduced allowing fabrication to take place at ground level. This will significantly alleviate some of the risks associated with working at great heights. It will also reduce the construction time of projects so they can be market ready much earlier than before.
To date, the "Taisun" crane has bagged several awards such as the Woelfel Best Mechanical Engineering Award 2008, OTC Spotlight on New Technology Award 2008, Guinness World Record and was also nominated as a finalist for Best Innovation Award at the Seatrade Asia Awards 2008 and Lloyds List 2008.

This looks like the COSL Pioneer. Stat oil contracted it and it was hit by large wave that killed one crew member and injured others. Stat oil cancelled. Seaways MPSS is much larger and designed for the same location, greater operating draft, greater air gap and based on lessons learned in shipbuilding and construction of four.poorly designed semis!
