      Can I suggest you or your friend Matt from Undecided do a CoVid with The Limiting Factor UA-cam channel about the potential of this battery. AS...
      As ever their is a significant difference between a battery that has been demonstrated in a lab & it being manufactured in a Giga Factory.
      But with a density 3× Lithium Ion its use in aircraft & in military systems is where its most likely to be found. If the aircraft structure can be built from Lithium sulphur batteries you have a credible solution for short to medium range aircraft! Admittedly it may be fighting the use of hydrogen enriched ammonia as a fuel

      I'm really curious if there is any information of the rate of charge and dispersal of charge as that is also a massive consideration in batteries and in many applications make a bigger difference than density. Even in lithium ion batteries there are differences in this and that makes a change in electric cars like tesla plaid requires the cells its using because they don't have different cells that can provide faster energy to the electric motors.

      Again, the problem isn't the millage! The problem is the degradation of the batteries! Which is especially problematic for LITHIUM batteries!

      @@js0988 what degradation? Do not compare the lithium ion batteries used in phones with those used in cars. That's like saying that Formula 1 engines can't drive for more than a few hundred miles & need constant maintenance thus petrol engines can't be used in a mustang!
      Their was some problems with Nissan batteries in the leaf because it didn't have active thermal management of the battery pack, but even Nissan batteries would still get 70% charge after 100,000 miles & thats on a 10 year old cell chemistry. These days cobalt free Lithium Iron (Iron as in steel) may have lower density than high performance Lithium Nickel Cobolt batteries, but they can be easily charged to 90% and are good for 250,000 miles without noticeable degradation. Why not get yourself some education & watch some of the Limiting Factor UA-cam channel

      That was my first thought, too. At some point though I have to consider how long I want to sit on a bike seat, but having three times the range would allow me to take some of the strain off my legs.

      @@LightsOnMultiMediaMindArts I guess I’m more intrigued by the option for more power than range.
      I’m currently working on a video about what qualifies as good bike infrastructure and a key thing (in my opinion) is using larger public transit like buses and trains as the destination.
      So ideally, you’re never on your e bike for too long because you’re just using it for quick hops to better transit. But going 20/25mph for that hop rather than 15mph can make a huge difference!

      @@Meatball2022 a lot of the affordable ones are currently 20-30 miles. Like I said in my other reply: now that I think about it a bit more I’m actually more excited about the potential extra power rather than the range increase. Sorry for the confusion!

    For me, if this works and can be scaled, the really exciting thing would be making Sodium based batteries with 3x energy density. Both Sodium and Sulphur are cheap and plentiful and would more than satisfy the vast majority of personal and transport use. That would save the Lithium Sulphur batteries for more demanding/niche applications.

      @@youtubecommenter-on9kd the greatest thing about so many “breakthrough” announcements is that it indicates there is still a lot of room for improving energy storage capabilities. I remember when lithium ion batteries seemed like such a miracle vs nickel metal hydride. At the time it also seemed like they suddenly became widely adopted in a very short time.

    Incredibly excited for what this means for all tech! Imagine a smart watch that only has to be charged once a week. Electric planes are more feasible. Grid storage will become cheap and easy so goodbye peaker plants.
    I'm excited to think how much closer we are to becoming a fully type 1 civilization.

      Li ion grid storage is already cheaper than peaker plants, only now Tesla & others are going with cheaper LFP.
      These would be the economic death knell for coal, gas, & nuclear.

      @@DynamicHaze Nuclear takes too long and costs too much. And despite all the promises to the contrary costs & build times have only been going up due to screw ups, poor planning, incompetence, and/or corruption during construction.
      Watch Ricky's video on Nuclear for some of the stupid screw ups that have happened with Olkiluoto #3, which was supposed to take 5 years to build but took 17. and Flamanville #3 which is 10 years behind schedule and 4 times the original cost so far.
      It's the same story with Vogtle #3 & 4 in Georgia. The screw ups on that one included irreparably damaging the spent fuel pool while looking for leaks.

      has been keeping track of the numerous screw ups and overruns involved.
      And then there is the aborted V.C. Summers #3 & 4. The companies involved have had fines and restitution levied against them and people have been indicted in federal & state court with some already sent to prison.
      Even the much ballyhooed SMRs are following in the footsteps of their big brothers.
      The NuScale UAMPS project which was supposed to produce first electricity in 2026 has had that date pushed back to 2029.
      Solar & wind have seen costs dropping

      And larger capacity & duration iron flow batteries are already up and running in San Diego, and Liquid Air Energy storage facilities, which can store energy for months, are being built in Vermont & several sites in the UK.
      If private companies want to spend their money on nuclear, fine. I hope they succeed.
      But no public money should be wasted on it and should instead be spent on the cheaper, faster to deploy renewables & storage.

      @@IronmanV5 Solar isn’t as reliable as Nuclear fission here. The UK is building solar powerplants but according to farmers it’s on fertilized land and that is wastage of fertilized land which in our times has ever increasing value because of the ever increasing population that needs to be fed. The UK also doesn’t have good sunlight intensity and the best of weather so it would be a waste of time and money to put solar energy there. In the northern hemisphere sunlight intensity decreases a lot in winter times so again solar energy wouldn’t be as effective. Nuclear fission reactors however are much more reliable, produce more on lesser land and have longer lifespans. It is also highly unlikely solar would support heavy industries so that’s another reason why we need conventional powerplants.

    They would put a smaller battery in that gets the same battery life of today's battery. Not only that, They would use different battery sizes for different price points. It's the batteries that make EV's more expensive.

      That's what excites me. A battery one third the weight, size and cost for the same range gets my vote. That translates into the vehicle having a lighter structure, using less materials to increase range, better handling, less tyre wear, etc.

      The smaller battery will also charge faster. Most ICE cars have a range of around 300mi because thats about the longest most people can sit in a car without stopping anyway. The ones that have greater ranges than that are usually trucks, because when towing, the range is decreased greatly, so to engineer a 300mi range into a truck towing a trailer, the unladen range will be around 600mi.
      If a battery is made that can charge in 5min, people probably would be perfectly OK with even a 150mile range.

      @@twoeightythreez My truck loaded and a trailer in tow ( ~17,000lbs GVW ) gets up to 16MPG with non-ethanol fuel. 12 with the cheapo stuff. That times a 35 gallon tank means a range of 420 to 560 miles. Sad thing is, empty it gets the same mileage. Around town is more like how many gallons to the mile. 2001 Chevy Silverado Extended Cab Dually with an 8.1L V8, Allison, and a locking 4.10 diff.

    I was reading about this a couple months ago.
    Very exciting if it gets commercialized.
    This Energy density could get us 4 seater electric airplanes with 1000 lb useful load and 3-4 hour duration. Cut the cost of operation for GA aircraft in half.

      Yeah sulfur is cheap. However the big issue here is they use a carbon nanofiber cathode. This costs $6.52 a gram though the method used in the paper requires a somewhat expensive process called chemical vapor deposition. Currently this can be done in a lab and mass manufacturing is a challenge.

    This type of breakthrough I expected would happen once humanity started to challenge ourselves for better answers and solutions. This is why we evolved into the planet's dominant specie; we push boundaries, and more often than not, accidental discoveries propel revolutions, more so than the expected results.
    This is very encouraging and hopefully the 1st of many beneficial breakthroughs.

    What's exciting about these is that they make electric planes, big rigs, and railroads far more practical & economical.
    These would mean a Mini EV would go from having 115 miles of range to 345 miles and make EV motorcycles far more practical.

      Still have to charge them with power from the grid, which mostly currently is coal or oil or natural gas. Or NUCLEAR, or HYDRO which the greenies say ruins watersheds and ecosystems or GEOTHERMAL (which pumps human waste effluents into the ground to get steam in return) With all the energy losses inherent in the grid system. There will NEVER EVER be enough power generation in America for a nation of all electric vehicles. We would have needed to start a new nuclear power plant every 3 WEEKS since ten years ago to keep up with this "amazing transition" that the pResident just spoke of. Not gonna happen. They are driving America into energy POVERTY which will actually kill hundreds of thousands to tens of millions of Americans in the next decade if not way sooner. Do some math. Unless you own your own solar panels in sufficient acreage to power your home and your electric vehicle you are going to be reduced to essential driving just like us gassers. The minute the federal government gets a lock on requiring and accelerating the transition, those FREE charging stations will no longer be free. When it costs as much to charge your electric as it does to buy gas for an equivalent vehicle, will that energy guzzling Tesla still pencil out as a sound ecological decision?

      Eh those things need quick turn around time. Time is money so unless fossil fuel shoots up it won't happen anytime soon.
      Someone said use it for cargo ships and I laughed just imagining a cargoship sitting there charging for a week when they literally rarely stop.

    Great video and greetings from the U.K.! This is exciting news, just as a modern combustion engine is a marvel compared to that installed in the Ford Model-T, I’m sure that the batteries of the future will become much better as these complex chemistry issues are refined. The future is exciting, let’s hope we can build a better relationship with our beautiful planet in the very near future.

    I remember in high school chemistry classes almost 40 years ago learning about how electrochemical cells work and how to figure out the voltage any two likely materials create. But modern cells are so far beyond those simple chemistry lessons so I hope they've been updating them!

      in short, no, because it is not yet commercial. commercial usually means that they have the micronization done and only then would you know the size of the battery.

    So, you still need lithium in the cells, and then you need carbon nano fiber to hopefully replicate and create the crystallized sulfur form. Then create the cathodes from it with other secondary elements and scale. Although it sounds great, this would take many years to test and perfect. Thanks for the update

    Fantastic news, like you say they just need to figure out the why's and how to's.
    Obviously we won't be seeing it for a while, being in a lab environment means many hurdles after need to be met.
    But it's great knowing sulfur batteries have finally been discovered, we are looking at good times ahead once this goes through 👍

    The mention of sodium/sulpher is also very interesting. If that turns out to be workable the material supply problems of lithium evaporate. Sodium is as common as salt.

    the escaping of polysulfide intermediates (produced during the redox reaction process) from the cathode structure is the primary reason for rapid capacity fading.
    Lithium ion battery doesn't degrade as easily as lithium sulfur overtime.

    People will forget that they could have great range instead focusing on cost instead.

      @William Arrington still be good to have a choice. Where I live, a trip to the city is 250 miles round trip. A trip to our kids city is over 430 miles. (Each way)

      I would see just different types of EVs within the same brand. For those who go on huge long road trips (usually for work) -- VS people who work from home and live in the city and don't have to drive much where current range on good EVs is more than just fine.

    You should have included how much cobalt goes into a battery vs how much sulphur so that the dollars per mt made more sense. If its 112,000 per mt of cobalt but that can do X amount of batteries then it makes it hard to compare to the sulphur price per battery.

      A sulfur battery is lighter than an equivalent sized cobalt battery so a sulfur battery is still cheaper.

    Wow, not just another incremental improvement but potential game changer. Sure hope they can get this or something equivalent operational. Could make electric aircraft actually practical.

    I don’t understand why so many people mention crazy high insurance costs for their Teslas. Mine went up about only $50 per 6 month coverage period when I switched from an Audi to a Tesla. Using Progressive insurance.

    I think the biggest game changer in battery technology will come from the (NDB) Nuclear Diamond battery! The patent was approved in 2021, with a 28,000 year shelf life, never needs to be recharged and isn’t affected by weather/climate change and is far more stable than lithium ion batteries are!

      Honestly, I think to late. We will go over in the limit in 2025 which was needed to keep us on track to be below 1,5 degrees by 2030.
      Humanity will survive, the planet will restore itself. It's just gonna be terrible place to life, society as we know it won't remain.

    1500 mile makes sense. for extreme use cases.
    For most cars 500mile would be more than enough, and then the performance would drastically improve due to lower vehicle weight.
    There'll be a sweet spot.

      for cars it practically lowers cost but 500m miles can be already achieved today.
      however, for busses and trucks this is an important step. and even for trains when you don't have pieces of tracks with electric support.

      @@stefanweilhartner4415 Yup. For such use cases it makes sense.
      I think for the majority of private vehicles it would not just be a cost improvement. A 150-200kg'ish battery with the capacity of a current 500kg battery will already significantly increase the range. Possibly by as much as 10-20%. Maybe more. Weight matters after all. That's like having 2 passengers vs 5. So we may well see EVs with 500mile range, which get 600 miles with the same battery capacity, because the weight of the battery is so significantly reduced.
      Tire and other mechanical maintenance can also be significantly reduced due to lower weight.

      and it opens other possibilities too. you can reduce the battery compartment in height which might be interesting for sports cars like the MX5/Miata. I think it is very difficult to make an MX5/Miata with current battery tech without getting a higher underfloor that contains the batteries. i don't know how tesla will do it for their Roadster. their 4680 cells with approx. 296Wh/kg are the highest cells they have. if they want the battery floor thinner, they have to align them horizontally.

    Wow, I hope this becomes a thing soon.
    I know Canada has a huge mega giant reserve of Sulfur in storage doing nothing, so the Sulfur wouldn't even be needed to be mined, it is already available for whatever use humanity could want it for!

    4:10 that insurance price is because tesla charges ridiculous prices for any kind of repair.
    A minor fender bender? Just a scratched bumper?
    They can charge you 9k to replace a bumper and it's gonna take them 2 months so yeah, any insurance that has to pay that and maybe even give you a rent car while your tesla is two months out of service waiting for the world's most expensive bumper is going to try to charge a lot to every tesla user.

      Scarcity isn't the only reason for innovation. There are other potential benefits such as high energy density and a longer battery life. I agree that lithium supply is limited but, it ain't depleting any soon. By then we'll have an alternative.

    Talk to me when they are available for less than $50/Kwhr. So many times we've been teased about some great breakthrough but then nothing happens. The reason I believe $50/Kwhr is a breakthrough point is that would make a 100 Kwhr battery ~ $5,000 or roughly the cost of the motor in an ICE. A long range 400 + mile EV for the cost of an equivalent gas car and only the hard core will want to use gas.

    Well, not grid storage unless you're tight on space. You've already covered the company ESS with Iron redux flow batteries, and that's certainly the best solution for where space is abundant like where wind and solar farms are. And more than anything else, their tech needs to be advocated because it is THE most earth friendly grid storage from everything I've seen so far.
    But yes for something like a powerwall this would be much better than Li-Ion.
    I think ESS is getting a slow start because of how much Tesla competes in grid storage, and every time Tesla gets a new contract for grid storage, I see the cyber truck being delayed another month.
    I've always believed that by 2030 there will be multiple battery techs on the market which are a good jump over what we have right now due to the sheer volume of R&D in battery tech. It was bound to happen and yes I think any issues will be solved that is in the way of BEV being the CLEAR choice for driving in every regard, other than the noise and pollution. They'll be cheaper to manufacture and cost less than ICEV and range anxiety will be SO 2020. It already costs less to manufacture BEV over ICEV in China.

      I agree with you & I support companies like ESS & Ambri. But the price is the governor. Factors like product cost, environment friendly materials & high efficiency will make electricity generated from renewable to be cheaper. So if this tech is going to be better in those factors for the grid scale storage it's rationally to support monoclinic sulfur batteries than the iron flow batteries! vice versa

    This would be great in a hybrid as well. Triple the range for any given hybrid when in electric mode. My guess is they could also do some electronic wizardry and increase the short term power levels for when they are in ice and electric simultaneously giving more power to assist the ice. One can hope this all pans out. Thank you.
