Some of my friends went together and bought an antique writing box for me for Christmas. It’s from 1854 and I love it. I can store my note cards, journals, address book, pencils, pens, ink, wax furnace and sealing stamps in one place. I can carry it around the house or even outside to write. If anyone is looking to invest in an antique that is beautiful, convenient and functional, I highly recommend searching for a writing box.

I understand about ink being messy - can’t tell you how many blouses I ruined back in the day when architectural work was still drafted on paper or mylar. The pencils were a mess too - the sides of my hands and cuffs of blouses would both be grey with graphite. But at least it could be washed away! I like Ticonderoga pencils as well - as you say...reliable. Thanks for the interesting video!
I am an avid fountain pen collector, with well over 400+ in my collection. Gave up writing with a ballpoint in 1988-1989. Use a pencil on my job for writing info in the check register. Writing instrument history is very fascinating.
I always loved pencils as a girl. In the house I grew up in, we even had a pencil sharpener mounted on the side of one of the kitchen counters. I distinctly remember getting the impression that pens were what grown ups wrote with, and I remember feeling that I had “arrived” when I used pens (but always pencils for math). But I hated that you couldn’t erase ink and had to cross out the mistakes. Erasable pens came along and they were TERRIBLE. The ink was splotchy. Blech. My favorite pencils were Snoopy and Garfield, because they were round and not hexagonal. This video has inspired me to go back to my girlhood and use pencils again. I just returned from a big box store with a pack of Ticonderogas and a sharpener.
I have a couple "ever sharps" from the victorian era... And I do agree with you! Finding lead that fits is really hard! ( I think it's .6mm-7mm thick? I can't remember... I haven't found some In a while... I used to write most of my homework in high school with them c. 2017.... And sadly... I haven't used them since.....
One thing I loved about them is you could pull the back end out to determine how much lead was left in them, and then unscrewing the back to have a place to hold more lead
Sara, lead sticks sized for 1700's mechanical pencils are sold online by Townsends (a colonial era historical supplier ) in two different sizes. Does anyone know where to get those skinny little wood pencils for aide de memoirs?
As stated by my philosophy professor Dr. Berk Sullivan, "Any man who has a pocket knife and a pencil is never at a lose for a writing instrument." Truly a wise man indeed.
Hi Sarah, please consider sharing why you chose to write your manuscript by hand before you put it in the computer. You mentioned it helps with creativity but can you expand upon that sometime? Do you hand write your first draft and then type it once you finished or do you write a little type a little? Thank you!

big graphite sticks are used in woodworking pencils. Ask for a carpenter`s pencil - you could easily reshape it`s heart with a pencil knife and have plenty of graphite for your favorite pencil
Switched my android powered phone into the monochrome setting with the vivid display on and set to the warmest side on the scale. In other words, I'm watching you in black and white with a slight sepia warmth to it. You look pretty good (not meant as a flirt).

How interesting! I never realized that mechanical pencils date quite that far back. I would have guessed 1930s - 1950s, or somewhere in that period.

Try eBay for the pencil leads, or go to a local artist supply store that sells drafting supplies for architects.
I use mechanical pencils all the time. Leads can be purchased at office supply stores. I have some mother-of-pearl mechanical pencils and I love them!
