I’m new to bass (just over a year) I’ve a 5-string squier J bass, and my first inspiration is Frank Brunot. For sure I play a lot of old funk without knowing the names of the bassists. That’s where I’m at now and honestly the bass is such an underrated instrument, there’s just so much to it

You're absolutely correct about it being underrate! But it feels like once you can play at level where you can hang with most bands, you join this band of excusive brothers and sisters who you can relate too.

I saw Jaco Pastorius live with Weather Report.
I saw Stanley Clarke live with Return to Forever (Lenny White, Chick Corea, Al Di Meola) I love The classic album School Days by Stanley Clarke especially.
I had a music appreciation course as a teen from Mike Manring who is a virtuoso bassist and was a student of Jaco Pastorius. Manring also designed his own bass.
Some others I like are Jeff Berlin, Tony Levin
I definitely gravitate to Funk and Jazz Fusion for bass. I love slap bass too.
Btw did you ever hear Awakenings by the Reddings?
People tend to list bassists for rock bands just because they like the band…

I know that Jaco concert had to have been mind blowing because he truly did things with the bass that were absolutely unbelievable!
I am vaguely familiar with Awakenings by the Reddings but I should probably revisit it. I'm long overdue for it!

No doubt about it, James Jameson is #1 and there's not even a close second. Louis Johnson is my most underrated.
