  • I was always curious what I meant to be "on call", when nurses get to be on call, and how NOT to get called in! Hopefully this should clarify any questions you might have.

I work in different field but I rather come to work than be on-call. One hour response time, must be in cell range at all time, and not having the freedom to do what ever I want to do on my day off makes me feeling anxious and feels like on I am on some sort of invisible leash. One of the main reason I left my previous job.

When she said that she wanted to talk to us like “we’re friends” I felt a little offended because I thought we were already friends.

At one small hospital where I worked at we didn't have on-call. Either they would call offering $100 to $300 plus the extra overtime 12-hour shift to do an extra day. Or if they didn't the bonus I'd be like, "I'll come in to work for 9 hours but I better see 12 hours of pay, okay?" Then they would response okay.
But we also did do the alternative to on-call, which is over staffing the med/surg floor and canceling nurses if census was low.
half up, second, third on-call and everything else was interesting. Thanks for the knowledge.

So for you, at your hospital, on-call is just the regular days you are already scheduled to work, not additional days?

our ICU works by having the employee call into staffing asking for "wants off" before that shift. and we get half our base rate ...so around 33$/hr and then if we do get called in we get double time;)

Hi Miki Rai, I really enjoy watching your videos thanks for your advice! Quick question, I know you went to UCLA for Nursing School, and that you went to community college before. Did you attend Santa Monica College, as I know this is UCLA's #1 transfer CC? Thanks in advance.

Jon Müller Literally I was just thinking this! I’m in nursing school right now but the hospital I want to work at is about 40 minutes away without traffic. I don’t want to move, but maybe I might have to 😬

We get $4/hr for on call but when we get call in, we get 1.5 x regular hr, so it’s good pay.
