Elliot is fantastic at going into major detail about seemingly simple submissions, that kind of meticulous attention to technique has really helped me a lot when it comes to submissions like armbars or triangles. If I ever become good enough to teach jiu jitsu I hope I can emulate his coaching style.
Be careful when you grab your feet to adjust because you can hurt your knee. Instead is recommended to grab your shin and actually your knee to adjust it safely
I appreciate the level of detail given. I too was taught the triangle in what seemed like a 50 step process... and each detail is INVALUABLE. Each detail you miss is one hole in your offense that can be exploited by someone who does know the details. But one thing that always gets to me when I watch triangle videos is: Do you really need to pull his arm to one side and pull his head down to finish??? The way I was taught, if you have the correct angle and you are tight enough then it should work perfectly. When I practice and am already setting up for the triangle, I dont really touch their arm or head unless I absolutely have to. In fact, there's many instances where I purposely leave their arm in the non-ideal position because lots of people worry about defending the arm placement. While they are worrying about that, I just get it relatively tight and get the right angle and with a light squeeze of the legs, its done, no hands. Is it me or are my opponents just not experienced??
UrMMV From what I understood from the video, he moved the arm across and controlled the head to prevent his opponent from posturing. I agree with you that the arm across and head control is not necessary if your position is perfect before applying the submission, but I've found it easier personally to try to control my opponents posture using those techniques while I work for position.
I just watched this video for fun but what are 'gi' exactly? I saw the comments and a lots of people were mentioning the 'gi' stuff... Thx for the answer =D
Had my teacher in a triangle today and he wasn't tapping when everyone else does. Its hard enough to get him in a triangle, there is no way im going to scre it up again. It's like caching a big fish and seeing it unhook itself as you go to put it in the boat. Heartbreaking. Hope this video helps. I think the next time he'll be in trouble . Thanks a lot Stephan again. I saw your head turning purple. Thats a good sign (-;
My biggest issue is getting that arm across before they wrap my leg up.. i try for omoplatas but most people are quick enough to get out. Any suggestions?
Way too long, way too detailed, way too unrealistic. Maybe for only BJJ grappling can you be this detailed and actually pull it off. If you want to see a perfect triangle, watch the finish of Anthony Pettis vs Alex Karalexis. Can be found on youtube.
Too much detail? Have you ever done any grappling? The details are what makes or breaks the technique. Extremely useful in a video you can watch over and over. There's a lot of detail to no-gi grappling as well, it's just so fast it can be hard to see it in an actual fight.
Pettis application follows Elliot Bayev's steps, except he skipped pushing Karalexis with his leg at the beginning, probably because he felt he could take a shortcut. Bayev gives us all the details, some moves seemingly skipped if the opponent slips into the correct position. I like Bayev's detailed instruction.

Omaplata is a low % tap even for experienced dudes. Getting that arm across can come slowly I guess, head, arm, head arm
Use the Ryan Hall "stomp and curl" finish and you won't need their arm across to finish. ua-cam.com/video/rsNtpxKVn5M/v-deo.html
