Parallel Compression Using Aux Tracks

  • A few years back, we showed you a bit about parallel compression in SONAR: blog.cakewalk.c...
Now that we've introduced Patch Points in the Jamaica Plain update, you can do these same things with a much more efficient workflow.
Let's quickly define parallel processing: In parallel processing, a signal is duplicated into two or more signals. Each copy of the signal is processed differently but plays back simultaneously with the original. The copy/copies are then mixed together.
Parallel Compression, aka "New York Compression," is most commonly used on drums to add body to the drum mix without flattening the snappy transients.

why not just use the "Dry/Wet" knob on the compressor instead of two tracks to blend wet and dry?

Now it's easier to do parallel processing in SONAR with the recently added Patch Points and Aux Tracks features. What are some other ways you like to use the new Universal Routing Technology?

Was there an update that gave an automatic parallel compression bus? I noticed it's on my tracks now and I must certainly didn't do it. Or maybe Ez drummer does it?

how is this any different than sends to a bus?

+Adam Lewis Good point. The concept is essentially the same. What we've done here is make the workflow a bit speedier, while still providing you the option to route with the buses if that's what you prefer. A big part of this is the ability to have the Aux Tracks move around within the Track Pane. Aux Tracks are also handy because they can serve the purpose of an Audio Track or a Bus, depending on the application, so they're certainly useful for a lot more than just parallel processing--this is just one example.

CakewalkSoftware oh ok, thanks for the reply. It's always good to have more options and choices even if they yield the same results, this way users can choose which way works best for themselves. Thanks for the reply!

A bus doesnt allow to sound the drums clean and the drums comp simultaneously.

+CakewalkSoftware hey guys, why not incorporate the timer calculator right inside sonar? that will increase it's value even more. One more thing. Sometimes I run timer when I work. It will be wonderful if in the next update we get a timer inside unless it's already there and I'm missing out. It will track the entire project time and may even have a detailed timer menu or something where it will break down time spend like time on eq, time on compressor, time on mixing, editing etc. It will not only help people like me on a hourly charge but also for learners to track their proficiency improvements over time.

zeebazu Pretty cool idea! If you haven't already, I'd recommend posting this on our features and ideas forum, this way other members of the Cakewalk community can refine and vote on it. Link to features and ideas forum: forum.cakewalk.com/Features-Ideas-f76.aspx

Alexander Howard Wonderful idea. Great for analytics and monitoring your time management as well. Also great for a visual representation of why you charged what you charged for a specific customer. Maybe a handy Copy to clipboard and paste button in "additional comments/notes" on your excel invoice.
