The thought of one day teaching martial arts scares me, because throughout my whole life I’ve never been the best speaker due to having Asperger’s syndrome. Now granted I think ever since starting BJJ recently I’ve been doing relatively fine with communication, but I do still think there’s much room for improvement.
There is a guy at my gym who is 18 and a higher blue belt. He started at 15. He has Asperger's and he is the triangle master. He also helps teach kids class. BJJ has been life changing for him. Don't view Asperger's as a negative, view it as a positive as it allows you to think differently than others.
I have social anxiety and used to be VERY claustrophobic but have. been co-teaching kids classes about 2 years now. if you are really passionate about teaching, it'll be scary at first but that melts away and just becomes rewarding.
Chewy I just got my blue belt on Saturday this last week and you were the first bjj cannel I ever saw on yt. Ty for all your help to a guy you didn't know existed ❤️
also, i have questioned authority on moves. at my personal gym it was usually met with "interesting, lets try it" and sometimes we get a "you know that might work for your geometry" most of the time thought its a "you see this asswhoopin, thats preventing that theory from working? thats why."
I already love tip #1! When I asked a friend how to be more confident as a trainer, yoga teacher and as a person in general he told me that confidence comes from competence! Looking back this mentally really helped me a lot ✊🏾
Great video. (recording a 5 minute video with your phone once/week and posting it on youtube as unlisted is a great way to better speaking skills too) and joining Toastmasters.
As a lifelong blue belt 😆, not because I suck but rather moved a lot and then took a lot of time off, I really enjoy teaching the brand new white belts. I don't get technical because I'm only a blue belt, but I teach the most basics of the fundamentals; i.e. base, posture, breath, etc. I also encourage them to drill what they fear the most, say, being stuck in side control or mount, and DEFENSE. That's why we all started, right?
So true I see this all the time ! Teachers need to speak slower and more deliberate ! BUT not take forever , that shit is just as annoying , it’s certain points slower and certain points drive home 🙏😉
Hi Chewy, I am a blue belt in my mid 30's, I love BJJ but i have a problem say to speak. I want to drill but i am finding it hard to find people who want to drill with me, pretty much everyone in my academy wants to just roll. which is fine but to me im finding it hard as I dont have good muscle memory or I totally forget what to do when am in a certain position hence why i need to drill. I have asked so many guys in my academy to drill. Yes one or two have agreed to drill during the time we roll as our instructor also encourages us to drill if you dont want to roll. but it always ends up after few minutes "oh can we roll now" iv asked guys if they are willing to meet up after class or in the weekend to come down to the mats and drill yet none are interested i even said we can roll after but that only sometimes gets the attention. I really want to get good at this but it takes two to tango. I was thinking of buying a dummy to practice on but i saw your video regarding dummies. I dont really have any friends who are interested in doing BJJ as they are too busy with the lives. i feel jealous when i hear fellow class mates in the academy, talking about how they will drill a move with each other when ever that is. I have cheekily joined in the convo and asked if I could join them, granted i dont know these people that well or they are higher ranked or lower rank then me. I just get a weird stir sometimes or they laugh it off or they say yes but then quickly avoid telling me when they would like to drill. I do get along with everyone in the academy. I have no issues with anyone i know people dont have issues with me. We have father and sons, brother and brother, friends and friends who train here. i joined this academy 2 and half years ago I was extremely shy as i dont know anyone but i faced my nervs and shyness by going and turning up. it proves that i really have talking a like to this sport and love to get very good at it. I have watched many of your videos when you answer peoples questions regarding the mental aspect of this sport, so I see you kinda like a shrink that helps me with issues. I hope you can advise me on what i can do even if i cant find someone to drill with is the anything else that can help me be good at BJJ. I assume staying fit in general would be one answer, as I am lifting weights and jogging etc...
hello I watched alot of your videos as a beginner just starting this sport/art and it helped me alot :) My question is.. is there a way to prevent/practice neck injuries because quite alot of people around me get neck injuries while rolling in a closed(?) guard position(?) when he/she is trying to do a triangle choke but the partner resists, stands up tries and tries to flip him/her and unfortunately ends up hurting him/her. This is so scary to me because i dont know how to flip(?) myself. I have a hard time getting my legs/ass in the air and just flip/turn backwards if you know what i mean..I cant do certain moves so i get discouraged/worried about the fact that if i am doing the right sport/MA for me you know what i mean. But anyway it would be helpful if i could get some advice about this matter if possible of course thank you
im a 160 pound 6"0 white belt. my question is: should i try to put on some more muscle to help with strength and intimidation factor in competitions? i want to but i dont want to negatively impact my performance.
Purple belt since 2019 here: focus on technique right now. In a scenario where there is a white belt who is slightly stronger vs. one who has better technique (and strategy) I'm putting my money on the one with the better technique. That'll be the bigger difference maker for you at the moment.
@@jptothetree im focusing on technique heavily atm (visualization, drilling extra techniques whenever i possibly can, shadowwrestling, rewatching videos of known techniques to reinforce my knowledge, etc.) really tryna get perfect technique for sure!
Hey, this is kind of a off the wall question, but in your experience, are most MMA gyms owned or largely populated by right wing/republican/conservative people? Past 3 years I’ve trained at 2 different gyms, I wanna keep politics out of it, but coaches and gym members bring it up every now and then. An old supervisor at my job trained at a popular BJJ gym and told me his coach was a hardcore Trump guy. I wanna train MMA, but I need to also get away from this kind of stuff. Lol
@@Chewjitsu Nah, but I feel a judgment by them. And I do want that stuff left out of training. Im there to learn how to physically fight. Not verbally.

I am on the spectrum too. I have been teaching kids and adult white belts and am slowly getting more and more comfortable each time!
I just started helping teach the kids classes and will eventually be the head coach of the kids... makes me nervous but I'm up for the challenge!
Thank you, I just started to help coaching with the kids/ teens class and the teens can be ruthless lol. Great video.
They can be. But they can also be a ton of fun

I swear I've been wanting to ask this for a long time
Chewy! Always humble
Your videos are awesome. Keep them coming!

Thank you, Professor.
As always, sage advice.
Have a nice weekend.
You too brother
I thought I was the only one that did some of these ( notes on phone with pictures). Somehow I would hide it lol, glad you do this too!
As with all of your videos.. very helpful! Thanks Chewy 🤙
You can learn alot from school teachers..talk to them. Education majors learn all this and how to be proficient at communicating instruction.

Maybe one day I'll be good enough to coach. Maybe in about a decade... maybe.
Speak clearly to my mechanical EyeBall!!!

Just roll with lower belts

if you want to see "how teachers teach, or how talkers talk, watch a few "ted talks"
Be careful. Some Ted talks are just cringe paid advertisements 😂

You also gotta speak fast af too
Huh?
don't speak. drill. if that doesn't work then wristlock.
Wrist locks are always a good solution.
You seem like you have the gift of gabbing and also seem like an extrovert. Rock on
I’m half and half. Extrovert in some situations. But I recharge my battery and desperately need my solitude otherwise I get burned out.
