a best before is not an expiry date it’s just to tell you the date at which a product may start to be past it’s best. A use by is an expiry date.
Mouldy food has definitely expired though I agree with you there

The tomatoes were gross and shouldn't have been included. But, I feel like, unless you're getting a back from an all natural or organic food store, like a Whole Foods, you can't expect what you get to not have preservatives and things. As for the cheese, best buy dates are not expiration dates. They're the company's best *estimate* of when the food will have the best flavor. They have no way of knowing for sure and quite honestly, it's in their financial interest to underestimate those dates so that people throw stuff away and buy more. *A lot* of people throw away perfectly good food because they believe it magically goes bad on a certain date, when most of the time, it can be eaten well past that date. If you open the product and it doesn't have mold, is not slimy and looks and smells good, the odds are pretty good that it's perfectly fine (think about it, our grandparents didn't have best buy dates, they relied on their senses to determine if food was good). That food can be frozen and safely eaten at a later date.

  • @charlottetooth1457
    @charlottetooth1457 Місяць тому +15

The colour in the cheese is Carotene - that is the orange pigment that makes carrots orange, so is a natural food colour - it is also the plant form of vitamin A, so is actually good for you. The cheese will be fine to eat even if it is out of date. I would freeze it.
Dextrose - that is another name for glucose ie a form of sugar. so while not great, it is not all that bad.

@@katiegaffney8939whilst I appreciate that eating food after the 'Best Before' date isn't for everyone I feel that comments such as yours could be interpreted as food shaming. Sadly there are some people who are in a predicament where they have no choice but to eat something that is beyond the BB date. May I ask what is so bad about dried pasta/lentils/other beans, or some tinned goods that may be a few weeks beyond the BB date? Especially when there is oversight by the Food Standards Agency?

@@coraclouden2506 Exactly, I completely agree with you (and had already commented on here about it), if its still safe to eat its not ok to say its "yucky". And food shaming is just not right, I was taught to respect food, (unfortunately) some have more access to it than others and we shouldn't shame it like that!

They can include best before expired but not use by unless on the day date or in date, they will say that 4 out of 6 tomatoes are ok when washed , as for processed and ingredients not being to your liking you shouldnt buy these bags as basically you get what you’re given for discounted price, they are hit and miss but i have had some great ones that i was able to make a few meals with for the family , cheeses can also be frozen

However what I do HIGHLY recommend is the Lidl veg boxes for .£1.50. Full of fruit and veg and all fresh, I got an amazing one at the weekend, loads of tomatoes, onions, peppers, bananas nectarines, peaches, if you go between 8.30am and 9am. I did laugh at all that cheese though! How ridiculous! Xx

I tend to go for end of the day produce at coffee shops, etc. I also get a weekly surprise bag from a local Eastern European supermarket and get loads of (in date!) dairy and meat for £4. We're lucky as we are rural, and I got 20 punnets of strawberries for £8. Supposed to be jam class, but we're eating our way through them for breakfasts, packed lunches, and the odd dessert.

Ive had lots of TGTGB, but i'm picky about where i get them from. Usually only Aldi and a local greengrocers. Never had mouldy food or anything really bad.
The cheese is actually nice despite it being processed.Personally I'd rather that and it be cruelty free. Also you can geate it and freeze it, so it would have been fine if you were willing to try it.
I wouldnt worry too much about the ingredients list as a not so regular purchase, considering you eat bacon and use lard, which both are full of saturated fat.
You could make your own natural cordial from berries or a smoothie maybe and nice cream from bananas. That way you at least know whats going in it.
Cats need wet food as a regular part of their diet, specifically for taurine. Also for hydration and the prevention of urinary issues, in particularly in males.
I haven't tried Gourmet, but i get the Aldi mousse tins which are 59p.and my cats love them. I just by the liver one as its got the highest protein content

Sorry about your Too Good to Go bag. You were asking about the Purina Gourmet - I get a pack of these once a month for my cat as a treat and a give her one per week to mix with her regular food to make it interesting for her. If your cat is picky and doesn't like it, then you didn't waste too much money. It is hit and miss with cats. For example, my cat loves those meat sticks treats and I treat her to some a couple of time a month or so and I thought it'd be great to try the Waitrose and the M&S own brand, which are a bit more expensive and my cat flat out refused to touch it. My cat also really doesn't like M&S canned cat food. I don't know what they put into it, but she really doesn't like M&S stuff lol. Also I'd avoid giving pets anything that has a lot of salt, such as ham, as this is a problem for their little bodies and can lead to health consequences.

I bought kidneys for my cat, lightly simmered in water then gave them to him, he wolfed it down. Although they're more nutritious raw (taurine) just as long as they're very fresh and washed well, some cats don't like raw though...

Oh that’s rubbish. Maybe try Lidl they have a veg but they soon disappear I’ve not done too good to go as it always seems to be bread n bakery. I’ve started buying a bag of raisins n putting them in a jar for my sweet treat lol as I really need to stay away from the additives n sugar n wheat. It’s hard to healthy n watch the ingredients but u are doing great.

The tomatoes and bread shouldn't have been included. People who are genuinely struggling for food wont be looking at the ingredients and grumbling about potato starch. Perhaps a little entitled here? I have used TGTG several times and never had out of date food. The BB (Best Before) date is not the same as Use By. BB means it is still ok to eat but the quality may deteriorate. UB means it will make you ill - eg fish, meat, yogurt

"Best before" is not the same as "Use by"...Imo only thing shocking there are the mouldy tomatoes...And, well, the highly processed stuff, but nothing new there as supermarkets are filled with processed junk food! The "best before" items ahould be okay to eat, ofc you always have to double check them for mould etc but they should be ok! Apart from the overly processed stuff I think we shouldnt bash food like that, doesnt seem right. And TGTG is an amazing thing as it helps tackle food waste (ofc supermarkets have to be aware of what they give away, they shouldnt be giving away mouldy food, but its a great initiative!!) Just my opinions!

@@TheBudgetFoodie I've used it a few times, some shops & supermarkets are better than others! Some give you an amazing selection! I just think we shouldnt be bashing these initiatives bc so many others dont even attempt to save good food but just throw it out! We shouldnt be bad mouthing TGTG but helping supermarkets be better at doing it through constructive criticism (like in this case let them know that as a customer you're so pleased they're part of such an initiative but that they should take a closer look for mould etc)! Again, the bb dates arent necessarily an issue, those are just "indicative" dates and usually they're still good food that shouldnt go to waste.

Im absolutely not okay with the mouldy tomatoes, out of date bread, and out of date cheese, however if you're so upset by additives and colourings, then why buy a mystery bag? BB means best before, not use by - they are very different things! The vegan cheese is perfectly safe to eat and legal to sell. However, the best before date is there to tell you that it is absolutely fine to eat, just the quality may begin to drop over time once the date has passed. I absolutely agree you should complain about the out of date USE BY/mouldy items in the bag, however you can't complain and shame the ingredients in items that other people may have no option but to purchase given the current financial climate.

Out of date items in these bags and mouldy tomatoes isn’t acceptable in the slightest i would complain. I have seen some good tgtg bags which made me want to give them a go but this has put me off. We live on a very tight budget so if I got a bag this bad it would be a huge waste of our penny’s so thanks for sharing 💜
