Currently I am 76 and have owned seventeen 57 fords including one retractable so this video was very enjoyable to watch. I did find a few facts that were new to me. Very good video!
Good informative info. I owned a 1957 Ford Fairlane 500 , 2 door hardtop with 245 HP 312 engine, Ford- o -Matic , power steering . Did not have Air, power Brakes, electric windows. I really liked this car & it would run. Outran many Chevys, & Pontiacs, which were the most popular "HOT" cars of that day. One engine this guy & many others miss, was a 312 with higher compression, 2 fours , & hotter cam, rated @ 285 HP. In July 2024 I will be 86 years old. I f it were possible I would choose to go back in time to the 1950'S . Good years, good people !
Bought a 1957 Fairlane 500 2-door hardtop in 1962. White over red, which I had to wax once a week to keep shiny. Had the 312 "Police Interceptor" (rocker cover logos - no badges anywhere) with 2-4 bbls. Change the manifold to a single 4-bbl trying to improve gas mileage, even though gas was only 25 cents/gal at the time. Had the auto-tune radio, power steering, Ford-0-Matic 3-speed - which I swapped for a manual 3-speed with Hurst shifter. Could pretty near put a 4x8 sheet of plywood in the back seat ... or myself and 2 friendly girls. Put on falsie whitewalls because black walls made it look so ugly. By the time I got through with it, I had to run 90 weight gear lube in the crankcase to make blow-by tolerable. Smoked a bit, though. Sexiest car I've ever owned. Traded it in for a new Mustang.
THIS is THE MOST INFORMATIVE video on this car model I've EVER seen !!!! The 4 door fairlane ( w/what I've always called " hidden post " ) was My first car . It was 13 yrs. old when I bought it ( I paid a whopping $125 for it @ $20 bucks a wk. ) ! Dosent sound like much today , but , back then I only cleared $23.80 per wk . at a 40 hr./wk. job ! I've never been lucky enough to buy another one ( unless You count that red / white two dr. hard top I bought after a night od drinking that I never could find again .... BUT , thats a story for ANOTHER day ...)
My Dad had a brand new "57 Fairlane 500 with the 312 4 barrel, Fordamatic. I was 16 and had a lot of fun outrunning the other '57 Models! No one ever mentions the 140 MPH speedo? Great cars. Thank you for this video, brings back great memories.
My grandfather bought a 57 fairlane. With the Thunderbird special, and a three on the tree. Brand new in early 58. I remember how proud of it, and the duel quad carbs It was the first brand new car he ever bought. And the last. It was white with gold.
Considering I've had 4 of them, all with 58 hoods (for the scoop) and all with 312's. I learned a lot here! Had a Del Rio/Ranch Wagon, Ranchero, 300 Custom and a Fairlane 500, all 2 doors, This was back in the day you could get an entire front clip for $150.00 and wheels for $5.00....Good times....I do wish to have another 300 however...
You mentioned model kits, I used to glue two small pieces of aluminum tubing under the back for exhaust pipes and then take the cotton off two of mom's q tips and glue inside for the smoke, also a bit behind the rear wheels for burning rubber effect, a good memory.
I don't know if you're still around but if you are I need to let you know that as a 57 Ford fan, I consider this the most informative and knowledgeable video and information on these beautiful cars. Thank you.
David Rehm I’m the one who uploaded it and I’m still around. Sadly, the creators have not responded to my many attempts to contact them and I doubt they are still around.
@@enthusiastm Thank You from the bottom of My heart for this video ( I hope You post all of them ) !!!! See My other comments , You'll understand why .
Thanks for posting this - too bad the originator is not around, but glad you've put it out there for the rest of us. I'm working on a Town Victoria at the moment and would have liked to have asked him a few questions!
My Dad had a 57 Squire with the 312 dual carbs. OMG it was fast. Sad some kids stole it because it had that engine and blew the engine. I was such a beauty.
Mine was said to be made in Canada. It was registered and said Victoria on the Montana registration. It was a Canary Yellow and White, 2 DOOR hardtop "Fairlane 500" with a yellow V/8, 312 - I believe, with a "three on the tree with overdrive".
I had a Ford 300 when l was 18 , l wasnt too happy with the engine's power, so...... off to the salvage yard to look for a stronger engine. A 312 if possible . The salvage mgr. told us to go look for a motor in the yard. He said $150 for any motor, we would pull it .It was a huge yard, about 16 acres. So...... way back , far from the mgr's sight we found a wrecked 57 T-bird with a complete 312 and trans. We started removing it, very excited. We had it almost out, guess what? The mgr. came looking for us and boy was he upset! He said " NOT THAT MOTOR! THAT CAR'S BEEN SOLD, I'M WAITING FOR THE BUYER TODAY!" We said you told us to pick out one. He said Go pick out another one, leave this one alone. We found a humongous car, a monster 59 mercury with an intact motor and trans. The thing must have weighted 10 tons! My ford 300 weighted 2800 lbs so l removed it and put it in my small ford, man! The power it put out was amazing! The only race l lost and barely, was to a Falcon Sprint with a four speed trans. The Mercury motor was putting out about 300 hp l believe. I had a great time in hi school, racing. It even beat a 60 Oldsmobile in a mile long race passing it doing 120 mph. The Olds owner couldn't believe he lost to a " small " Ford.
In 1966 I owned a '57 Ford Fairlane 500 2dr. Tu-Tone red and black. 292cu in. V8 automatic. A fun car. If I still owned it I would've turned it into a frame off retromod. The Big IF.
This video originally was produced by Steve Rodgers, who's property this was filmed on. Steve had avery exstensive 57-58 ford collection which included, at the time I knew him every configuration of the 57's line up, except for one. There were around 27-28 variations of the same basic body style & Steve even had the 4dr S/C cop car shown! He called his compound in the desert 57 Heaven, and it was to us FOMOCO FREAKS! He even had a SOHC 427 powered T-BUCKET, that he would not drive sober, heh-heh! Steve & his ol lady are great Ford lovein people, and although I've since lost touch with these two, I haven't forgotten the good times & hospitality with them. Both of us "would rather eat worms than own a Chevy"!!
Thanks for this ............I had a 1957 Meteor a Canadian made model it came with a 292 , and the gold insert side mouldings the grille was what really differed from the models you covered it was a beautiful car and a fast one , my car was a post sedan . I ended up putting a police 429 in it and 5 week later got hit in the side by a woman running a yellow light ..........pushed the passenger side a foot into the inside of the car..............that ended my beloved Meteor 1957 Mercury .....check out the Meteors 57's At least and comfort is my USA cousin's have a very special 1957 Ford LENA . and drive it to car meets in Washington state.....car is as stock as Ford made her.........and beautiful she is white over baby Blue
I've got a '57 Skyliner with factory AC. Any chance that other video series mentioned at the end of this video is available somewhere? It would be helpful with working out how to correctly fix this rare factory AC.
57 Fairlane 500s were beautiful cars. Ford should make another run at the hardtop convertible thing. With today's digital electronics, it might actually work this time!
My choice of the 57 ford car would be the hard top four door two tone with white on top with 292 or 312 V8 with the 4 bbl carburetor, but stock engine. Over all this design lasted the longest. retractables had issues in two areas, one was the sides in the rear above the quarter panels were leak issues, another was from the front where a gap between the windshield and eight inches back where it folded was a rust leak issue area. An example of my choice would be the 57 ford used in the movie psycho by the woman, that she got at the used car dealer and used to drive to the bates hotel and those were the most affordable. Ever notice how that ford on their pickups starting in 1967 through 1969 used the white on top and color on bottom scheme?
What I know now as to then when I always had the 57 ford in my driveway and usually it was a different one cause of blowing them up or wrecking them driving them to the limit thinking they were there forever. As they got harder to find, I took better care and started acting like a adult. I the guy I am now seen me doing what I did, I would of beat me to death and am ashamed for what I did. I learned how to fix the oiling problem for the valves and then they went from noisy to quiet and ran flawlessly. I main problem was no two cars used the same parts and so it would find one ready to go. See I knew I was going to viet nam and was going to die anyway so who cared. Well I made it back and no it was not fun but home again I went to the 58 and 59 because the 57 was already getting hard to find in any shape as I didn't know how to fix rusted parts that well and I never had a torch or welder. I have owned most every body style they made and swapped parts around lots. I could get the tail light lens at the parts house so traded out the 59 lens for the 57 making it set in further and moving the backup light to a different spot. I had always five or more three ninety engines and all my rigs got them. They were all fast and many were rollovers ending their lives. I sure wish I had that time over. I am ashamed
Patrick Joseph - my ford 300 ate 348 powered chevy for breakfast, lunch , and dinner. Wake up and smell the coffee , you're stuck in a fairy tale by Chevy.
1957 Ford Custom Tudor Sedans (Model 70A) did come with roll-up 1/4 windows, however, Custom Business Sedans (Model 70D) look almost identical and came with stationary glass. What is the model number of yours? 70A or 70D?
Great informative video! Call me weird (I don't care) but my dream car is a '57 2 door wagon. The back curved glass always appealed to me. That said I do like the lines on the '56 Parklane wagon's (Parklane wagon only came in '56) front fenders better, but hey personalize like you said.
I used to own one of these back in 1966. I was 13 years old and it didn't run, I bought it from my brother for 15 dollars. I came home from school one day and it was gone, my mother gave it to a junkyard, needless to say I was upset. I was going to work on it and get it running when i had made enough money. Oh well, that's life.

all my uncles, my dad also had 57 fords. 57 fords out sold 57 Chevy's.
Yep almost two to one!
The main reason was GM went to tubeless tires and people were't sure about them.

While AC technology wasn't very good back then people used evaporative and, at least out west in the lower humidity, they worked pretty well.
The '57 year of Ford's dominance on the strip may or may not have occurred but the next year, the 348 Chevy manhandled the Fords.
