Nice video - thanks! Suggest turn the water on and check for leaks before installing the final trim piece and handle. (And, as others mentioned, don’t forget the silicon grease on the o-rings!)
yep. thats also an assembly grease where it holds the washers in place as you push the cartridge. chances of success are greater if the little grease capsule that comes in the packaging is used
Interesting note: the back of the unit has ovals instead of circles. I called Koehler as this seemed liked it wouldn’t work. She assured me it would and that many plumbers have called with the same question. Installed and no issues. Thank you.
Not only that. The new one has a rounded top piece of plastic that seems like it would cause problems. I guess it doesn't. I have had problems with leaks if it's not on perfectly.
Thank you for the information. The problem is that the splined end of the spindle has broken off, rendering the handle useless. I think, fairly sure, that the valve is either GP500520 or GP800820. The instructions that I have, say remove 2 screws holding the chrome wall fitting and unscrew the valve handle. There is no threaded Nut or Collar, only a chromed metal sleeve that spins freely, but does not unscrew anything. It says to pull off the chrome wall fitting complete with the handle, but I cannot move it. I can still use the shower, by turning the piece that the handle used to connect to. Any ideas how to open up this valve??? please!!
If my hot and cold water inlet positions are reversed (i.e. cold on the left), should I flip/rotate the Pressure-Balancing piece or flip/rotate the actual mixer valve?
Hello. It was the spout diverter since I have a bathtub. But it is the same if you only have a shower head. Most of the time I have to install the same new one a few times because it keeps leaking. I alway buy two because sometimes the first (new) leaks. IN my opinion not very reliable product.
What BPU and collar replaces the old 737 K NA AA, brass 3/4 componets. it is a nitemare. The existing one have not pressure at all. Hot water is slow but not cold water. It is a nice piece but a lot to desire Tks
What is the plastic part called at 6:07? I need a new one. A screw snapped, so the plastic sleeve was damaged getting it off. I got the replacement balancing unit, but it didn't come with the plastic sleeve and I've been having a really hard time tracking it down.
I'm pretty sure this is the repair kit I need.....and am trying to gain the courage to try it. My set up has a diverter. Will this change the instructions at all?
Hello, it should be the same. You can do it. Just follow instructions step by step. Pay special attention on the O rings . Make sure they are place correctly. Let me know how it goes. Thanks
After replacing this set, my shower head keeps dripping. Can you please let me know which part is likely bad that I need to replace? Or is there any adjustments I can do?
Hello there!! It is the cartridge. It happens to me every time I replace one of this. I have to do it 5 or 6 times. Keep trying. Make sure you flush. Keep trying. If after a few times it keeps leaking ....get another new one and return that one. It sucks!!! Good luck . Let me know how it goes.
@@alexthehandyman3494 Hi Alex, we got it fixed by redoing it. What we found out and what we noticed before the first time install was that the O-Ring behind the Pressure balancer was slightly larger and does not provide a perfect snug fit. Today, I used my hair dryer to heat the O-Rings for 30 seconds and it shrunk enough to provide a very snug fit when I put the two O-Rings into the pressure balancer slots. I also put a bit of grease there to make sure they stay there instead of moving. Hope that helps for your future projects!
I have a constant drip from my tub spout. I replaced the pbu and cartridge but when i turn the water to my house back on, the water flows through the tub spout as if the shower valve is fully open. Turn the valve makes no difference in the amount of water flowing. Any idea why this might be?
Hello. I sorry to hear that. Turn water off and do all everything again. Make sure all o rings are in place. Make sure you put everything back as it supposed to be. Make sure everything is tight. Try again. Get new parts again, let me know.
Hello Bull, That is a plaster guard. Most mixing valve has them to help you installing the depth the valve. Depending on the manufacture they want you to have that white ring at the same level or behind the finish wall. (not past , inside the bathroom) After installation you may discard it or leave it.
Hello, Take a picture of the trim, remove the trim and take a picture of how it looks without the plate. Go to google and search by image. Use the picture you took. Compare yours with others. Look at more videos and compare. That is how you find out. It would be nice if it had a model number right there in big numbers for you t see.
if it leaks from shower head or spout, the cartridge is to blame. If hot /cold is not right then is the balancing spool. I would replace both. Please don't forget to like and subscribe. thanks
I order both parts from the link you provided. I installed exactly the way you did, but still leaks. Un installed and reinstalled 3 times and still leaks from the bathtub pipe. Any advice?
Hello Randy. Did you flush it before you installed the new cartridge. 2 out 5 cartridges I have to return. It is a pain in the back!! Get another one and return the faulty one. You can get them at Menards, Home Depot or Lowe.s. Replace the cartridge one only . Leave the balancing valve. You ll replace the balancing valve only when it fluctuates hot and cold . Let me know what you end up doing. Some times it takes me 5 times to get rid of the leak. Make sure you tighten the screw very well. Good luck
Hello Are you installing the o rings? it gets 3. 2 int the mixing valve and one big one int he cartridge. watch the video again and see if y0u missed one step.
@@alexthehandyman3494 yep, I did it all correctly...I figured it out. You have to set the handle to the mid point so the water pressure doesn't blow past the gaskets and flood that chamber. The parts aren't faulty it just needs to establish flow through the new set up so it can properly seal and then you can slowly turn the handle off and it will work. I spent all night thinking about it and realized it is the water pressure... Thank you so much for replying and I hope my comment helps others too
Hi, I have a customer with a Kohler valve and she has only hot water, I mean scolding hot water. I removed the cartridge just to get photos so I can get a replacement. But when I removed it, there were blue pieces of plastic or paint in the ports at the back, I removed them and tested when I put it back together but still just hot water. Is this likely just a cartridge replacement, or something bigger with the debris in actual feed lines? If I put the cartridge back on in reverse that should give me just cold water if its the cartridge at fault? Or is my logic too simple there?
Hello. Remember if there is a problem with the temperature of the water, either there is only hot or only cold or it fluctuates, the problem is with the pressure balancing unit which its deeper in the valve. The cartridge which is the outer part where the handle is, if this goes bad it would leak. So in your case the water is only hot . I ' ll replace the pressure balancing unit. Although I always, when replacing either unit, I always replace both. You dont want to take any chances. Remember to flush before inserting the new parts.
@@alexthehandyman3494 I figured it out myself later on by blowing through the pressure balancer. You are exactly correct, it was stuck to one side. Thanks man. :)
Any idea how to increase the flow rate on this valve? I believe the black part has smaller holes to reduce flow rate per manufacturer’s spec but I am working with slightly lower water pressure so I want to look into ways to increase flow rate. Any idea from anybody out there?
Hello Kim. This valve under regular conditions should not reduce the pressure. If the pressure before the valve is greater than after the valve, then the balancing unit is to blame. You should replace it. Might as well replace the cartridge too. Your problem might be somewhere else before it enters this valve. Let me know how it goes.
