March 12th, 2011. Billed as "Relentless", Miguel Cotto makes the 1st defense of his WBA Super World Light Middleweight Title against Ricardo Mayorga aka “El Matador”.
Prefight records; Cotto 35(28)-2, Mayorga 29(23)-7-1.
In Jun 2010, Cotto scored a TKO win over Yuri Foreman to win the WBA Super World Light Middleweight Championship. Ricardo Mayorga is set to be his first title defense.
In December 2010, Mayorga scored a TKO9 win over journeyman Michael Walker - his first fight after a 27 month layoff since his KO12 defeat to Shane Mosley back in September 2008.
Going into the fight, Cotto was world champion in 3 weight divisions; Light Welterweight, Welterweight & Light Middleweight while Mayorga won world titles in 2 weight classes - Welterweight & Light Middleweight.
Cotto held numerous wins over meaningful oppositions in Paulie Malignaggi, Ricardo Torres, Oktay Urkal, DeMarcus Corley, Lovemore N'dou, Carlos Maussa, Carlos Quintana, Randall Bailey, Zab Judah, Shane Mosley, Yuri Foreman & Joshua Clottey. On the other hand, Mayorga held notable wins over Andrew Lewis, Michele Piccirillo, Fernando Vargas, Vernon Forrest (2x).
Despite going into the fight a 10-1 betting underdog, Mayorga was able to trouble Cotto with his unorthodox style and landed a number of good right hands while taunting constantly to reel him into a slugfest. But for the most part, Cotto stayed composed and able to outland Mayorga with his better overall boxing skills.
In the final round, Cotto scored a knockdown with a big left hook and as Mayorga goes down he hurt his left hand. He was able to beat the count thought his left hand clearly troubled, thus not long after the fight resumed he signaled to referee Robert Byrd that he could not continue.
While the fight was overall one sided in favor of Cotto who was leading by a significant margin at the time of the stoppage, Mayorga was game all the way; troubling Cotto time after time with right hands. Many believed it would be a blowout for Cotto and will not go past the 6th frame.

Cotto is one of my favorite fighters ever to watch... His is so smooth and clean w/ his technique, and has great power too. Just an awesome fighter who I think is underrated now that he's retired.

Fun to watch but my god the sloppiest boxer I've ever seen.
I was a match-maker for Don King productions back in the day, and heard about this heavy-handed 'wild man' who had won the Central-America golden gloves and was taking heads in the ring. I used to fly to Costa Rica and film his fights etc. (he was living in Costa Rica at the time as there was little work in Nicuarga) I helped match-make a few of his early fights here in the US. He was a real fighter. That is for sure....dude brought it every second of every round. Hell of a nice guy too (he just played the bad guy..and Don soaked it up)

Everytime I watch Mayorga fights here on youtube, I get excited for him here even though he had losses because he's fun to watch, watchable, and is really a warrior. Filipino here.
Mayorga was still resilient and put on a show. I liked how he would keep fighting even when he was getting hammerd. He fight alot of elite boxers not many could say that. And he also retired lost year that was a long run he had eventually after taking that many hits over the years.

Cotto left everything in the ring, never ducked, always humble, was a gym rat, always praised his peers, and now works with young fighters. He showed tremendous heart! I frequently rewatch his fights, not many other boxers I do that with, rewatchability up there with early Roy Jones, Trinidad, Giatti, Prince Naseem, GGG, etc.. So, yeah, LEGEND

yeah in terms of taking punishment. Yeah he managed to get three rounds in this fight and he hurt cotto alot. Everyone thought it would be easy because of ring rust. But it was competitive.

Mayorga had the heart of a lion, but he never learned to set down on his punches. You watch this fight and you see Mayorga throwing a lot of punches, but they are all arm punches that Cotto had no problem with. Unfortunately, Mayorga's defense was his bravado and his chin. The bravado never let him down, I can not say the same for his chin!
