When someone eagerly overtakes me, I always make sure to wave at them at the traffic lights when I pull up exactly next to them 😂 Edit: I always drive progressively and at the correct speed limit. I do this to the 🔔ends that smash the limit to overtake, pull dangerous manoeuvres, only to end up next to me again. Laughable.

Not that I care what people do, but defensive driving is not always safer. Depends on how you drive defensively. Driving 5-10 mph under the speed limit is honestly far more dangerous than just keeping up with traffic

In California there's people that would speed up to 50 in the Median in a school zone just to get ahead of the 25mph traffic. Then get road rage when you honk at them.

The increase of people on their phones is insane, I check and it's literally almost every other person. I was in a taxi and on two occasions my driver (I regularly drove with him) almost crashed because he was on his phone. I had to tell him he was about to hit a tree at 60mph.

A driving instructor that doesn't teach defensive driving should not be an instructor.It's one of the most important parts of driving. Most drivers haven't a clue about defensive driving,they are hopeless!
Defensive driving doesn't mean paying attention to the person behind you and breaking early for them. If someone is riding you, you let them pass when safely able to do so. You domt change your breaking patterns or keep glacing back. That's a huge no no and takes your attention away from REAL defensive driving tactics which rely on focusing on what's in front of you and next to you.

Idk about the UK, but in America we (or at least I) was taught up to essentially ignore them. Almost any rearending finds the back driver at fault and you're likely to get a decent payout from it to fix the car or even replace it if it's so bad (hence why brake check scams exist)

I started driving when I was 8 in go karting. Then I started in cars on private tracks at 13 and passed my test like 3 months after my 17th birthday a couple years ago. I was never slow and I never got in the way.

I was such a nervous driver, I delayed taking my tests. Now when I see a learner, I keep my distance and drive the safest I can to make sure I don't spook them or something, and say encouragements in my car. They can't hear me though. When I was a learner doing reverse bay parking between two fancy cars, I took forever but got in perfectly. Didn't know there was a a mum in one car and a dad in the other waiting for their kids. They just looked at me, clapping hands and giving thumbs ups. That small positive gesture boosted my confidence so much.

These videos really make me wish I didn't learn to drive in the states. I would be way more equipped starting out there than I am with nearly a decade of American driving. In my state, we aren't testing on emergency braking. We are hardly tested on parking.. technically I should have not been passed, but the instructor could see I was just nervous (or he just didn't care 😂). Wild the difference.

I’m a student driver from America (for anyone who’s foreign to know not tryna be insulting or nothing) and people are crazy here. I’m gonna turn 16 next month and get my license. With my ADHD, it’s hard for me to focus on my surroundings because I’m so focused on the road. I have noticed that people do get on my bumper just to intimidate me because they think it’s funny to freak out new drivers here in my state, and I told my mom, “it’s ridiculous how they think they can intimidate student drivers like this, but then this is how they get into accidents with new drivers anyway, because they’re being absolutely stupid.” And it was literally this guy in a big truck and he almost got me in a wreck anyway because I was turning into the back entrance to our local Circle K, and there’s a pole there. He nearly made me hit it because he was also turning. It’s insane how stupid people can be when it comes to teen drivers.
In situations like this, I normally pull over wherever its safe, let them drive past, then continue onwards. Tailgating like this pressures me to drive at unsafe speeds for the road, so it's better to pull over and let them drive past.

If you guys really want to know how to do with a tailgater, you let them pass when safely able to do so. Don't brake differently to accommodate them, your putting too much focus on what's behind, not infront or to the sides, which is where "defensive driving" and "tactical meneurvering" really come into play. You don't drive defensively or maneuver in regards to who's behind you unless it's clear your about to get smacked.
You sound just like my driving instructor did and I love it. She was great, I loved her. I had a bus try to shove me off the road because he wanted to merge onto my lane (only 2 lanes, going in the same direction too) I couldn't move forward or back, I was in a jammed traffic line. The driving school car is a small car and people seemed to think they could bully me off the road because of the L signs on the car. But my driving instructor was a fierce woman, she'd tell me "just focus on what you're doing" and lay on the horn, while giving them the stink eye and a "wtf are you doing?" look. Worked every time.
this is a normal here in california, but nothing changes. they still risk their lives to get one car ahead yet we always end up at the same traffic light together. the worst part is that half of california gets mad at you because you’re actually going the speed limit.

Their liability but your injury. When I was 10 I was in a minor accident where a cat slammed into us from behind. I still get chronic back pain and am still in agony when lying down or standing for long periods of time. Yeah, the other driver is liable, but you still have consequences to your health.
To be fair, even though your attention should be on the road ahead (and miles ahead when possible), I was taught to always keep your head on swivel especially in situations like this. Accidents can happen from any angle. Also, I would have answered with “He is affecting my driving by putting me on alert.”
I've been tailgated so many times because I drive at the limit. Recently I was behind someone who was tailgating and I got a good laugh because they had to tap their brakes every couple of feet quite literally. The road we were on didn't have any passing lanes and the person the tailgater was behind was going faster than me. I was going 60. I don't understand the logic of driving so close to someone. If they have to stop suddenly you're screwed. If something happens to their car unexpectedly, you're screwed. If they choose to brakecheck you, you're going to hit them. You aren't going any faster by being that close, you're risking causing a serious accident, and you have to essentially ride your brakes the entire time? It makes zero sense and while I hope they don't get into an accident, I do wish something would happen that would wake them up to the idea that it isn't safe or right to do that. If someone tailgates me I slow way down, not to annoy them, but simply because having an accident at 30mph is a lot better than 60. So many unexpected things happen while driving and you cannot anticipate where or when they'll occur. Driving three inches behind someone's bumper doesn't allow you to have any time to stop or even swerve if something happens. I suppose people think they're invincible.
A rule of thumb for most drivers is when you're first starting out (or just not a good driver) follow the speed limit. When there are clearly more experienced drivers going around you it doesn't matter the limit. At that level the only limit is other drivers and cops. Laugh at him, but after that stop he is going to save several minutes not staying behind a slow driver.

Not too long ago, I was in the driving school as well, driving on 20 mph roads, constantly being tailgated. I asked my driving instructor if this is something normal or if people do this only to learners. She confirmed that most people tailgate learners or new drivers who have that 'P' sticker on their cars. My mum had a 'new driver' sticker on her car and people were constantly tailgating her, even though she sometimes drove above the speed limit. Now, she doesn't have that sticker anymore and she's not tailgated as much.
You inviting them could cause them to not clear you and clip your car and they say you moved over to stop. You agree with him under "duress" and the accident is your fault.
My grandpa has a saying about people like that. "everybody's in a hurry to get nowhere". People will rush around you just to shave an extra couple seconds off their travel time. That's why I'm glad I actually enjoy driving.

That was some of the best advice ive heard taught. Braking early is exactly what you need to do. Sometimes you have to drive for other drivers.
Idk about the UK, but in America we (or at least I) was taught up to essentially ignore them. Almost any rearending finds the back driver at fault and you're likely to get a decent payout from it to fix the car or even replace it if it's so bad (hence why brake check scams exist)

I was such a nervous driver, I delayed taking my tests. Now when I see a learner, I keep my distance and drive the safest I can to make sure I don't spook them or something, and say encouragements in my car. They can't hear me though.
When I was a learner doing reverse bay parking between two fancy cars, I took forever but got in perfectly. Didn't know there was a a mum in one car and a dad in the other waiting for their kids. They just looked at me, clapping hands and giving thumbs ups. That small positive gesture boosted my confidence so much.

He was so busy making sure I knew how much I had inconvenienced him that he didn't realize he'd passed me only to end up behind a dump truck. The "slow" lane filled up with cars before he could swerve back over and I got a good laugh. 😂

These videos really make me wish I didn't learn to drive in the states. I would be way more equipped starting out there than I am with nearly a decade of American driving. In my state, we aren't testing on emergency braking. We are hardly tested on parking.. technically I should have not been passed, but the instructor could see I was just nervous (or he just didn't care 😂). Wild the difference.

There's a stretch of highway I drive that's about 20~ minutes, with 3 red lights on the path. Anyone who I'm near at the beginning of the stretch will quite literally be at the last stoplight with me.

I’m a student driver from America (for anyone who’s foreign to know not tryna be insulting or nothing) and people are crazy here. I’m gonna turn 16 next month and get my license. With my ADHD, it’s hard for me to focus on my surroundings because I’m so focused on the road. I have noticed that people do get on my bumper just to intimidate me because they think it’s funny to freak out new drivers here in my state, and I told my mom, “it’s ridiculous how they think they can intimidate student drivers like this, but then this is how they get into accidents with new drivers anyway, because they’re being absolutely stupid.” And it was literally this guy in a big truck and he almost got me in a wreck anyway because I was turning into the back entrance to our local Circle K, and there’s a pole there. He nearly made me hit it because he was also turning. It’s insane how stupid people can be when it comes to teen drivers.

In situations like this, I normally pull over wherever its safe, let them drive past, then continue onwards. Tailgating like this pressures me to drive at unsafe speeds for the road, so it's better to pull over and let them drive past.

If you guys really want to know how to do with a tailgater, you let them pass when safely able to do so. Don't brake differently to accommodate them, your putting too much focus on what's behind, not infront or to the sides, which is where "defensive driving" and "tactical meneurvering" really come into play. You don't drive defensively or maneuver in regards to who's behind you unless it's clear your about to get smacked.
If you don't notice how others around you are driving then you're already distracted. Pay attention.

You sound just like my driving instructor did and I love it. She was great, I loved her. I had a bus try to shove me off the road because he wanted to merge onto my lane (only 2 lanes, going in the same direction too) I couldn't move forward or back, I was in a jammed traffic line. The driving school car is a small car and people seemed to think they could bully me off the road because of the L signs on the car. But my driving instructor was a fierce woman, she'd tell me "just focus on what you're doing" and lay on the horn, while giving them the stink eye and a "wtf are you doing?" look. Worked every time.

Their liability but your injury. When I was 10 I was in a minor accident where a cat slammed into us from behind. I still get chronic back pain and am still in agony when lying down or standing for long periods of time. Yeah, the other driver is liable, but you still have consequences to your health.

To be fair, even though your attention should be on the road ahead (and miles ahead when possible), I was taught to always keep your head on swivel especially in situations like this. Accidents can happen from any angle. Also, I would have answered with “He is affecting my driving by putting me on alert.”
I've been tailgated so many times because I drive at the limit.
Recently I was behind someone who was tailgating and I got a good laugh because they had to tap their brakes every couple of feet quite literally.
The road we were on didn't have any passing lanes and the person the tailgater was behind was going faster than me. I was going 60.
I don't understand the logic of driving so close to someone. If they have to stop suddenly you're screwed. If something happens to their car unexpectedly, you're screwed. If they choose to brakecheck you, you're going to hit them.
You aren't going any faster by being that close, you're risking causing a serious accident, and you have to essentially ride your brakes the entire time? It makes zero sense and while I hope they don't get into an accident, I do wish something would happen that would wake them up to the idea that it isn't safe or right to do that.
If someone tailgates me I slow way down, not to annoy them, but simply because having an accident at 30mph is a lot better than 60. So many unexpected things happen while driving and you cannot anticipate where or when they'll occur. Driving three inches behind someone's bumper doesn't allow you to have any time to stop or even swerve if something happens.
I suppose people think they're invincible.

A rule of thumb for most drivers is when you're first starting out (or just not a good driver) follow the speed limit. When there are clearly more experienced drivers going around you it doesn't matter the limit. At that level the only limit is other drivers and cops. Laugh at him, but after that stop he is going to save several minutes not staying behind a slow driver.

She mentioned that she drives at the speed limit. And seeing that road, I bet that it's not much more than 20 mph, which is really slow and there's pretty much nothing you can do about it. Not too long ago, I was in the driving school as well, driving on 20 mph roads, constantly being tailgated. I asked my driving instructor if this is something normal or if people do this only to learners. She confirmed that most people tailgate learners or new drivers who have that 'P' sticker on their cars.
My mum had a 'new driver' sticker on her car and people were constantly tailgating her, even though she sometimes drove above the speed limit. Now, she doesn't have that sticker anymore and she's not tailgated as much.

Phone use while driving should be punished by a lifetime driving ban, there's literally no excuse for it and phone drivers are now one of the biggest causes of pedestrian, cyclist and car crash deaths which goes to show how insanely dangerous it is.

You could see that he wasn't paying attention because he suddenly braked when he came closer. He doesn't necessarily just drive up to their back but he just wasn't paying attention.

It's really just an ego and impatience issue with these type of drivers.
It's a "I need to be ahead of others" mentality.
I love watching these knowing full and well that I could run my car off of the exhaust fumes of the car in front of me when I drive. I do enjoy the “you drive too close” lecture I get from people I know that ride with me or drive in front of me.
I just slow down when someone tailgates me. It pisses them off so much😂
I must admit I do that too 🤣 I don't mean abrupt breaking but just easing up on the speed. and if it gets worse I ease up on the speed even more. I have to warn the tailgaters that I have no limit in easing up the speed and I don't care going ridiculously slow if I need to. I'm trying to protect myself, my car and also you and your car. fortunately I'm a young woman so these, usually it's one type of "men", think I'm just a dumb bimbo who doesn't know how to drive. have no clue I do it on purpose (also I live in Europe so I'm not worried about somebody shooting me in a road rage)

I've witnessed this on 2 different instructors videos today. They are supposed to slow but they just keeping their foot down. Unbelievable that the instructor isnt saying something. So no its not normal, should be touching the brakes here not dukes of hazzarding it. 🤦♀️
