It’s not even a question of efficiency. It is a question of equal contribution. If two people one male and one female at the same designation are working on the same project, and the female can take couple of days extra leave every month, then the male has to make up for her by pulling her weight during periods of her absence. Not only does that violate the principle of diversity where equal opportunity and equal contribution regardless of demographics but also makes it unfair to the male team members. So either no period leave or she makes up for it but putting in extra hours if she avails the period leave.
Instead of giving period leave, the focus should be on providing a proper restroom and other necessary facilities in workplaces. So when women feels intense pain during periods they can rest for a while and continue their work later.
instead of period leave i think we can just increase the sick leave granted for woemn and allow work from home. this should be fine. this will prevent discrimination as well
No. I suffer but I still think it would be a step back. Companies would hesitate to hire women because of the productivity loss. Honestly, it is business and it is ruthless. Even if someone takes leave I'd suggest call it a sick day and not tell them it is because of periods.
I think work from home option should be given atleast for one day. Usually other days are manageable but cramps become painful during 1st or 2nd day. I think that will be fair ask and companies are not gonna lose any sleep over it.

Countries like south Korea and Taiwan have low fertility rate, due to pay-gap issue, gender role, work-balance etc and it would probably decrease the economic growth in the future. People, primarily the men here, saying period pain should not be so unbearable that a girl has to take leave really have no idea about the dire condition of gynaecologic issues and the lack of preventive measures offered for them...there aren't much medication available for the pain, many doctors dismiss it saying it's not that abnormal, simply suggest painkillers which are essentially steroids, that do more harm than good in the long term. 🙂 So anyone saying it 'should not' happen should suggest a cure instead of minimising the problem...trust me, we'd be more than happy.

Think of this from an employer view.... If you own a buissness and you need empoyees to work for you.... and there is maternity leave, paternity leave and upon that you have period leaves.... Who would you hire more? Males or females? I believe this period leave would lead to a reversal of the women upliftment and reduce the chances of women employment.... Instead of period leaves, perhaps a better solution would be to arrange for facilities inside the workplace for relaxation, availability of hear packs and areas to rest inside the workplace dedicated for these times. What do you think guys?
If you own a business and if you are arranging a team lunch or party once in a month. Definitely the expenses for men will be more than women for drinks. Also men will throw jobs and less patient compared to women, which result in employment of women preferably. Coming to your point pregnancyl leaves are not that much followed in private sector as you say for which there is a mandatory law prevailing already. In india at most companies already labour laws are a joke. Your final solution can only be arranged in big mnc but following these are also a question mark. Just reality

The first few days of a period can be particularly challenging for many women, though each body is different. Some experience severe pain, making it difficult to focus on work and lowering their productivity. Instead of spending the day feeling stressed and unwell, it makes more sense to rest at home. This isn't about gender discrimination-it's a genuine experience that women go through. Men may not fully understand it because they haven’t experienced it themselves. That's why we need to be more inclusive. This shouldn’t be a controversial topic. Just as maternity and paternity leave are now recognized for valid reasons, it's time to seriously consider the need for menstrual leave as well.

Taking care of somebody and you actually going through that pain are two different things and we already have leave categories called CL/PL for that. I am also aware that not every woman needs 2 days of leaves, it depends on person to person. It’s not a new problem, we should plan accordingly or at least look for better solution with the employers.

Possible solutions : * Just one day paid leave . * Work from home option for those days . * Specially allotting a resting room with a basic single bed and separate washroom in the office only for women. It will help them when they are on their periods and pregnancy. It should only be used when required . Sometimes cramps are just for hours not for the whole day . Just resting for a few hours is enough. * Women should know how comfortable life becomes with tampons and menstrual cups . ( They won't limit your movement )
Child birth, period is part of human life and should be given as much importance as we give importance to profits is business coz its ultimately human that we want to serve and through honouring life process only its possible.
Period leave should be given atleast 2 days because I saw how my sister suffer a lot during those days.....if we force them to work even during those days ....they can't work by giving their 100percent...so if we give them atleast 2 days they'll take rest and be back with the bang with full efficiency and health ✅
Instead of period leave we can offer sick bay or work from home options. Recognizing the need to offer comfort earns us immense loyalty from employees, which helps us long term.
What I think is that Period leave is not necessary in general case. In specific cases it can be provided if the condition is critical. If period leaves will be assured then there are possibilities that some of them may take advantage of it and take leave for no reason. Simultaneously , there will be less efficiency in completion of work. And afterall we talk about equality between males and females, then we shouldn't crave for more priorities . Rather we ought to act strongly and learn to face difficult circumstances.🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
I think 1-2 days should be fine. It is not that all the women will leave at once- just a few. Also, 1 or 2 days of leave will not affect the productivity of the company on a large scale. Instead, the woman can feel better and work better when she come after the leave. There's nausea, depression-like feelings apart from continuous bleeding and cramps. Work from home (depending on the job) can also be availed.
Period leaves should be given but with half pay so that women with real periods get benefit but also those who want to exploit this rule take it as a deterrent
Actually, there is no problem in allowing maternity leaves or period leaves etc. but with all this, women must also understand that you cannot get the same bonuses or salary as someone who comes to work every single day. Because its not fair as the productivity will be different. Im a woman too. Also policies has to make sense. Some women can simply lie and misuse this benefits for period leaves as its not as obvious as maternity leave. Also, having extra 13-15 period leaves, greatly impacts the productivity of the company n affects the economy in some ways too, such as lesser use of public transportation etc. But in some cases where the job can be done from home, on a laptop, then period leaves can work..
I think period leave should be allowed and work from home is also an option during period bcz it's not only about the pain it's about some other things like mood swings and tiredness..and so on
I have seen my mother and many other girls who go through a lot of pain especially on the first day including myself, its really difficult to be productive on such days so i do believe leaves should be given, women are made to bear the pain instead of giving some relaxation so why not change that ?
The work can be distributed like don't give all of 5 days off but atleast 3 or bare minimum 2 days off... And the work pending ask them to do it on Sundays and Saturdays or holidays or other way can be work from home which would be optional or less than regular days ... In this way..needs of Both the sides can be catered ❤I mean work won't be hampered and women can rest if it pains a lot coz the pain women experiences also vary from women to women... To some girls their periods are smooth while to others they need hot bags, coffee, tea, rest, body pain also... So both the sides should be seen before making a decision...... This is what I feel❤
Why can’t they propose intermediate laws like work from home. For professions that don’t allow this the workplace can come up with changes for women like resting place
In case,we allow period leave, considering there are 50 women employees.. Every women does not have same day of menstruation.. So consider among 50,3-4 women (it may vary) are not at work, for those days some group of employees can do more work (both women and mens).. And the cycle must be repeat with other group of womens having periods and group of employees which were work overtime.. If mens will work it is possible to do this thing in an easy manner
Time and our social scenarios are changing day by day. As we all are aware the first two days are most hectic so first two days ( means two days a month) can be given as period leaves. Things have changed so much over the past decades.. first maternity leaves were given ..now a days some of the organisations are giving paternity leave as well so that the parents divide the respective roles and help each other . As far as productivity is concerned ..if the previously mentioned leaves are not affecting the work place .. periods leaves will not make much big difference..
period cramps aren't supposed to be non bearable pain. I agree that cramps are really bad generally on the first two-three days and differ for each and every person , but granting period leave would only give rise to more discrimination and loss for the company. Moreover, if your period is that non bearable, you're sick that isn't normal , and every employee regardless of sex should have the option of work from home or sick leave once a month . All the men complaining about periods leaves, i guess for you, women should stop getting maternity leaves, then manny ambitious women would stop having kids(which is already the case), then you would complain about it when they wont bear your children. Also, in manyy cities, when the husband and the wife both work they live a comfortable life, it would be impossible to do so, if women werent working. And they would either give birth or or work. Men should stop complaining and be more empathetic about the intense pain women go through. Im not saying it should be 4-5 days, even a one day leave would be a good start.
I think you don't have to give leave, but you just don't make the attendance compulsory for 2 days max or best of all there's always work from home once a month.
Period leaves should be given but it should depend on the health of person whether she wants to take it or not because pain intensity and bearing capacity is different for every female.
I think in most of the private sector workplace, taking 2-3 days off in a month for personal well being is not a big deal, everyone does that. Instead of period leave you can take simply take sick leave or personal leave or work from home. In other cases where work pressure is too much and sudden leaves are not permitted, I think women should be given a leeway to utilise their leave without much resistance So all in all, having another paid period leave is not need of the hour
I think rather than having period leaves, there should be encouragement regarding a more sensitive and open work environment where women can freely talk about their physical state and the male co-workers should be more receptive and understanding to the same.. also there should be proper facilities like availability of proper washooms and sanitary pads, pain relievers etc. Periods should not be talked about in hushed tones like it still is in many parts of India. On the other hand, if you talk about leaves, a menstrual cycle is largely variable from one female to another and would also passively discourage the recruitment of women in workplaces due to loss of productivity.
As someone with very heavy bleeding on period which cause me very serious Anemia every month to the point admitting into hospital most of time I'm not demanding too much but first 3 days of period are very painful and difficult to move my body and feeling dizzy and sleeping all day so I think for every woman first 3 days leave during period with work from home should be fine for most of us
Dont agree . Period pains or discomforts vary from woman to woman and cannot be classified as a common bracket for not being able to work . Unlike pregnancy some women can cruise through periods as if nothing happened vs some who cannot even get up off their bed . In the latter case they cab apply for a sick leave . Approving period leaves would mean you are classifying all women n the pain they experience into one single bracket . Even if we put the male gender aside this is not fair universally to the female gender

All women won't be having same intensity of pain. So we can't judge them and generalise the pain every month we are going through. For example i have minimal pain during my periods but my sister struggle a lot to stand and walk due to her pain. So this should be considered. Rather than asking that "will you accept less salary" it is better to hold them also together to have a healthy work place.Because men need to understand your life is also connected with some women may be that's your mother, sister, wife, friend etc.. Providing good facilities and comfort for women in work place during periods can be provided(in case where work from home can't be done). Or else 2 days leave can be granted if work from home is an option (not applicable in every sector)
I think it should be an option for the female employees as if they have pain or other symptoms they can take a leave without any salary deductions as I believe most of us are habitual of this and we can normally work on the period days as well.
Atleast it should be given extra 2 days a month taken whenever it's serious because it's extra painful for women with heavy flow. Also it can be also misused so some measures to be taken to curb that rest consideration should be there.
Patients who get dysmenorrhea (painful periods) should still be able to work same as with any patient with a migraine. Also dysmenorrhea is not a normal symptom. 2-4/10 pain may be somewhat normal but any more than that needs to be seen by a doctor. It should not stop you from working. Please look at this as a medical issue. Government and individuals should please keep their sociology stuff to themselves. Much appreciated.
if a human can finish the given work under given timeline, the 3-4 days leave doesn't matter... and efficiency doesn't reduce either...but sadly in the office culture, the amount of hours on desk is given more priority than the overall work...
He should say periods days reduce efficiency. We women know how we manage to leave our home that day. Specifically those who have severe cramps. Women can't think of anything but going back and taking meds. They have been bearing this all cz there was no one ready to even accept periods as a topic to be talked about. It has been considered a Taboo topic in India and Pakistan. But now we are more aware that it's normal human cycle.
If men experienced periods, laws would likely be different. The mental strength women possess gives them resilience but also demands a lot from them. Working from home should be offered as an option; it's not as demanding as it seems!
No period leave. Women who suffer can avail sick leave ( period leave can be provisioned as optional unpaid leave, not all women need it).Asking for period leave for women in total will only push us back to decades. I dont think many women are in a position to afford not getting hired at all. Health is important but we have to look for alternative instead of a mandate. Remember , we are a huge population and there are many alternatives for employers. Females will only lose out on everything. Its better to weigh out pros and cons before demanding such laws. No employer should be 'punished' for hiring women. This may work in highly developed countries with less population. Women workforce participation is already low, this will just make things worse.
Companies, corporations etc, are there to serve the people, not the other way around. It should be remembered. Besides in India, in my knowledge two states, Kerala, Odisha have already brought laws for period leaves. Other states should follow.
I have a point of view which might offend a lot of women here but just hear me out. Granting a period leave every month is just detrimental for women's careers. For instance a business has 100 employees and 50 of them are women then the owner has to grant paid leaves to half of his workforce. That roughly goes to 48 days every year i.e one and a half months salary to be given when no work is completed. So in the end it is bad for his own business. This might increase discrimination and people might prefer hiring more men instead of women. So girls who live far from their homes won't get jobs. For this I think wfh should be considered. Or some other alternative but not paid leaves.
Simple efficiency would decrease if we make an employee to work with pain..When women who really needs period leave will come after 2-3 days,, they will be more inclined towards work and more happy considering their team look after their body needs
I think it's better to give a half-day salary for how many no. of days you are going to take period leaves. As, not all women go through period pain.. so if you want period leave, you can take it with a half-day salary.. That'll be a good balance between everyone. Otherwise if period leaves are given to all the women employees for 3 days, think about the workforce affected by that, No. Of women×3days.. No office will hire more women then..
By respecting artcile 14. There shouldn't be descrimination between gender. And in the view of humanity alternate plan can be intiated to prpvide half day leave which is fair idea.
According to me it be optional those have heavy pain they will take leave of one day but all 5 days no period is natural it means not we give excuse to work
It's not such a big deal...it can be easily made clear that only 2/3 consecutive days of leave will be allowed as period leave once a month, nd if an employee doesn't wish to avail them they can go for leave encashment too...nd I'm pretty sure that the entire female workforce in any workplace won't be getting their periods all at once..
I think 2 days should be fine and optional. This will balance both the sides!

instead of period leave i think we can just increase the sick leave granted for woemn and allow work from home. this should be fine. this will prevent discrimination as well
Agreed
I don't know why but today's generation really need period leave I think so by seeing comment section, but I saw women's who never was on leave and work that hard in every particular sector as farming housing etc, and even they were running there home's, while pregnancy also they were working, but today's generation really wants leave for every reason, sick leave casual leave festival leave blah blah blah.....
Yes because if the older generation has suffered doesn’t mean we have to suffer also. Changes should be made for more women to join work. If today’s generation women ask for there rights that is not bad but is commendable.

I believe period leaves should be optional, those who will take period leaves would work a little extra for some days without any salary deduction.
So according to that logic do women after maternity leave also need to work extra cuz of their leave???
@@anushasurla2874 both are completely different, maternity leave is still understandable, period leaves? Probably not. A woman can still go to work while on periods, not when she's pregnant and it also depends on the type of job, and since only women can carry the child, it can't be helped. Countries like south Korea and Taiwan have low fertility rate, due to pay-gap issue, gender role, work-balance etc and it would probably decrease the economic growth in the future. So if we suggest that woman work extra to cover most of their maternity leave, they'll automatically start having only one children or none and we wouldn't want that right? We can still find a way to manage period leaves but not maternity leaves.

I think 2 or 3 days are sufficient for leave ... And when a person is healthy and happy he will be more efficient at work place
If we talk about efficiency.
A person’s wellbeing also fuels up the efficiency of work.
So anyone saying it 'should not' happen should suggest a cure instead of minimising the problem...trust me, we'd be more than happy.
then i think payment for both male and female employees must not be the same men should get more payment as they don't take leave
I have never seen such type of body language in IAS aspirants/selected...some are more robotic and some are doing much acting......but his maturistic reaction make me fan🎉🎉🎉🎉

2 days very hard and discomfort it necessrey atleast 2 days leave should be every work place
You can take leave from your official leaves coz you can't expect gender equality after playing women card for period leave
Then man should also be given a 2 day leave each month because we have to look after our family and to give time to our families
@@mrboss4834 What makes you think women are not doing that? Looking after family and giving time to family is not exclusive to men. And even if we consider ground reality, in most households, women take care of the household chores (basically having 2 jobs).
@@srishtisingh2231 I said in most cases man does that job and you can't just take the advantage of getting a leave for the sake of periods and if you do so then be ready to get paid a lesser salary
Let’s be little compassionate, you have no idea what woman has to go through in these couple of days. Taking care of somebody and you actually going through that pain are two different things and we already have leave categories called CL/PL for that.
I am also aware that not every woman needs 2 days of leaves, it depends on person to person. It’s not a new problem, we should plan accordingly or at least look for better solution with the employers.
Only 1 day is very painful for each woman.(In my case i used to get senseless on first day till age of 24 no medicines worked long term,2nd day used to be painful but manageable,I can remind on the first day of period when i was in 23yrs, I was senseless in company,i wake up I seen myself in I CU,)Atleast one day in a month should be given. It should be added in earned leave balance in company system.

Possible solutions :
* Just one day paid leave .

People who are determined to take leave will take for sure irrelevant of the pay irrespective of gender. Your comment makes no sense.
And who will ensure that they are on period or having excessive pain.

At least 2 or 3 days are needed in workplace.
Even we give leaves to our house help during her periods .
I think period leave should be allowed and work from home is also an option during period bcz it's not only about the pain it's about some other things like mood swings and tiredness..and so on
No one against Period leave the issue is against Paid Period leave... No corporate companies will hire female workforce
Thankyou so much ma'am for this wonderful lecture..😊
It should be based on choice if someone wants then it should be an optional part ..should not compulsory
I think two days period leave is fine but at the same time men should also be given sick leave.
But you cannot get special treatment in the corporate world, it'll only put us backwards.

My answer would be...
As a male I don't know exactly how women suffer during their periods,I don't know how difficult for them to do the work during that period. So definitely it is women who have to decide whether they want leave or not.Men should not interfere in this...
But adverse effect of these period leave will be definitely one...decreased efficiency, and gender descrimination will rise because of this.People will prefer to have a male employee rather than female employee, because male will work 50 days more than female in an year with same salary or salary will be decreased to female employee compared to male employee for the same job....
So I think if periods doesn't cause much discomfort,I don't prefer to have leave during periods if I am a female.

A great and tricky question asked especially to a man to also test his knowledge abt the opposite gender 🙌
I think 6 days should be fine , for Normal period leave.
It will be blessing for the females, as periods are very painful and mood swings phrase
I think you don't have to give leave, but you just don't make the attendance compulsory for 2 days max or best of all there's always work from home once a month.
Work from home should be an option during periods
Period leaves should be given but it should depend on the health of person whether she wants to take it or not because pain intensity and bearing capacity is different for every female.
I think in most of the private sector workplace, taking 2-3 days off in a month for personal well being is not a big deal, everyone does that. Instead of period leave you can take simply take sick leave or personal leave or work from home.
In other cases where work pressure is too much and sudden leaves are not permitted, I think women should be given a leeway to utilise their leave without much resistance
So all in all, having another paid period leave is not need of the hour
I guess 2 or even 1 day are ok....it should be given every where
Yes...this is the need of hour...2 days of period leaves should be allowed
Yes period leave should be given and for equality salaries also be cut down
2 days should be given only because those are crucial and painfull more than the other days ..
Period leave na hone se achhha hai ki ho

Absolutely 5 days are good. Atleast we will have 5 days of relief.
I think it should be an option for the female employees as if they have pain or other symptoms they can take a leave without any salary deductions as I believe most of us are habitual of this and we can normally work on the period days as well.
Period leaves are good if kept optional from the employee's side.
2 or 3 days is fine.
4 or 5 is actually too much to ask for.
2 days period leave can be considered, not more than that. And it can also be made optional.
I think menstrual leave should be given for 3 days...with the optional if she is ok to work or go to school....
It should at least be given to students
Work life balance is around globally. Some places are lagging behind. Same as maternity leave and take off work for new parents to care for new borns.

Period leave should not extend 2 days because women can work in periods too later. After 2 days is not a big deal.
