I love to see those cemeteries that are still tended by locals who mow the lawns and keep things looking good. Speaks well of the people still living in these out of the way places.
The closing shot with the storm showed some green clouds, always a sign of hail. Kansas thunderstorms are super beautiful and powerful. Nice job coach😎
And I always wondered about the people and the families that lived and worked there. What stories we may of heard about if only those buildings could talk. And yet, just as the buildings are fading away, the people and their stories have faded away also.somehow I feel like we have lost our.
I love to photograph old rural buildings and imagine what they were like in their hay day. Looks like Lincoln County has a lot of historical structures.
As always, a great video, thanks. I live up in the mountains of far north central WA 20 miles from Canadastan. "Ranch Country". There a couple old boys still around that went to schools that aren't there anymore. Just like the man you met at the school house. I am proud to call some of them my friend. They have such colorful stories to tell to anyone that will take the time to patiently listen. Patience has become my middle name as a result(lol). Nice to see many of the older stone buildings in good repair and still serving its occupants.

very nice county, all of the towns are well kept. I think that shows the towns have pride in their area to keep the past alive while looking to the future. Wonder if the payphone works 📞 Nice, clean, safe comfortable motel, you really don't need much more than that. Great shots of lightning, that green sky and those clouds told an ominous story. I have been hearing about the tornadoes in Kansas and surrounding states. Great finds on some dirt roads. Stay safe and GOD bless
Aw, I love when you meet the locals, the old gent at the school was sweet. The lightning at the end makes this one of my favorite videos you've done. I grew up in the Midwest and always found thunderstorms exciting. You can add storm chaser to your resume now.
The word motel (from a blend of motor and hotel) typically implies a roadside hotel in which the doors of the rooms can be entered from outside. In contrast, hotel rooms are normally entered from inside the building. Motels are often less expensive and have fewer accommodations than hotels. So I would say, that you stayed in a Motel. So the Motel is kind of false advertising, especially to those who just put in "hotel" in the search engine because they don't want to stay at a Motel. I LOVE Murals. Do you have a playlist of just "Murals" on your channel? I know you have one of just water towers.
Great history and tremendous pictures, but what, Coach, is Himalayan Cuisine in Lincoln? That floored me. Back in the 80's and 90's Sylvan Grove was an absolute powerhouse in 8 Man football. The stadium is named for their old coach Mike Weatherman. I believe that he coached for 30+ years, he also won state with his girls basketball team.
Interesting name Vesper, in Latin it means evening, often referring to late afternoon or evening prayers and again Sylvan of Sylvan Grove, in Latin meaning wood or forest. The only people who used Latin then would have been Doctors, Lawyers or priests, so you can bet your bottom dollar that one of their founders was a Cleric of some kind. The field opposite Hammer Cemetery looked to have a really good crop of barley growing, what a lovely verdant area it is! Loads of ghost towns, what an interesting place, many of the old stone built school rooms look to be of a very similar design, possibly a school blue print at that time. We too get our share of tornadoes and water spouts in the UK but most of the time are nothing other than a talking point, doing little damage at all, but the ones you get are truly awe inspiring and so destructive... I would have been long gone my friend. Loved it John, thank you very much, good effort!
I liked all the old buildings in Lincoln County. Sylvan Grove looked like a really nice place. Too bad about the one little roadside cemetery that was so overgrown. Glad you were able to keep safe. Always put that before the video! As always, thanks for the trip.
This was very interesting. Some of those old brick/stone buildings their roofs are gone, but the structural walls still remain. The lightning ⛈️ was spectacular to watch.
We've been hearing about the tornadoes in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. I'm keeping those people in my prayers. The motel room looks nice and affordable. Love your videos. Please keep them coming.
Thanks for these Lincoln County videos. I have family farming there and it's interesting watching you visit some familiar spots, as well as some particularly in the southern half of the County I wasn't so familiar with. If you go back, make sure you catch an evening meal at Flyboy's in Sylvan Grove, not your typical small town Cafe.
That was pretty cool you met someone at Margaret, Kansas. That drive to Lone Walnut looked really treacherous, and you found some playground equipment. Good for you! I too was amazed at how many old school buildings you ran across. It would be really cool to map out all those just to see how many there are. Another great video, and I'm glad you didn't run across any tornadoes. Well, at least I didn't see any in the video! 😆

14:19 Pleasant Valley.......and I'm watching this on Sunday. It really is another Pleasant Valley Sunday! (It's a song by the Monkees if you're too young to know that). I'm amazed at the huge size of some of those abandoned farm houses. There was $$$$ in this area at one time. When tornado sirens go off, Kansans head out to the front porch! I wondered what kind of shape your car was in after driving down some of these roads. "The rental car".😆👍
Your comment reminded me of a cute abandoned small two story house, just off the road several hundred yards on the east side of highway 14, just about five or six miles south of the Nebraska/Kansas border. Years back, so eone would hang white sheet ghosts in the windows in early October. What a sight it was for the Halloween season. I have some pictures on my digital camera from a motorcycle trip down highway 14 one October. I always thought it a crying shame that the little house was abandoned. It was such a appealing looking little house.
Vesper is truly a map dot; nothing wrong at all with these small communities. Just like a lot that you have toured through Texas. Sylvan Grove is the type of community I would easily live in. Where we live is a little bigger, but not much. It is still the typical small town Texas. And keep up the great job. Some of us travel and tour vicariously through your travels.
Very interesting episodes. Lincoln County seems to have been a very busy place, at one time. With the storms, you could incorporate other weather videos in Kansas as, “ Storm Chasing With a Wise Guy”. It’s got a good sound to it! Just make sure that you have comprehensive insurance to cover hail damage and broken windshields!
Best tornado I ever saw was 2 football fields in front of me. I was in my car with my little doggie Daisy. It was crossing the road in front of me. It was a huge wedge tornado. This was in northeast Texas. I was on a 2 lane road with no shoulders. We have a lot of big trees here so I couldn’t see the horizon therefore I couldn’t see the tornado until I was almost right on top of it. I stopped when I saw it, took a picture (of course) and then immediately turned around and told Daisy to hang on. I floored it. Pedal to the metal baby. We got the heck outta Dodge!!! I met a storm chaser heading straight towards it. I thought….. well they’re fixing to have an experience. I enjoy all your videos!!! Be safe and I’ve often wondered if you’ve encountered inclement weather on your journeys. It’s been a WILD tornado season!!!
Interesting that this was in my UA-cam feed. Visited Beverly many times in the 60's and 70's. Driving there we would always stop at the Tescott cheese factory (in Ottawa County). Hi to any of the George and Florence Dewitt family that see this.
I remembered a time back in Iowa, possibly around the 1980's, when people were exploring old cemeteries. For headstones you couldn't read, they had blank paper and crayons, and would rub the sides of the crayon over the paper as it was laid on the headstone, and it would reveal what had been printed there. Many old cemeteries were mowed and cleaned up during those times. It was nice to see that happen. And it seems that someone has continued to keep many of them up since.
Commendable that the consolidated school in Sylvan Grove names the other communities: Hunter, Vesper, Laray. Seems like there were a plethora of schools in that part of the country. Pioneers took the education of their children seriously it seems. Speaking of serious John, I'm glad you had weather radio. Those gray green skies never bode well. Indeed, it was time to get out of Dodge. Great Series. Loved all the small towns and history you explored in Lincoln county.
Awesome! Thank you so much! You're first "credit" will be at the end of next Sunday's video as I've already uploaded the ones for Tue/Thu. Thanks again for the support!
Absolutely a beautiful county. There's nothing like the skies as a back drop when storms are moving in! Sylvan Grove was my favorite. Thanks to you, I'm going to make my way to Kansas to check it out...eventually 😊 Great video!
😄So I usually put on CC because half the time I can't understand what UA-camrs are saying even with my audio on 100 % because my brain just likes to jumble words. Anyhooo at 14:52 when the radio came on, my CC read "at once into the basement or a small se%ual room in a sturdy structure" I have no idea what he actually said because it really sounded like that. Can you explain if you people in Kansas have those type of rooms? Asking for a friend...🧐🤣 Yikes, at the end of the video, looks like you are heading straight into Tornado Territory with those green skies.
You drove past my grandparent's old home at about the 1:24 mark. I like the area, but it is a hard, harsh environment. I have nothing but respect for anyone that can eke out a living in central Kansas. Thank you for these videos.
Very nice Merry-go-rounds ! I saw a Teem (old soda pop) sign from a long time ago posted on one of the buildings there. We had 3 inches of rain last night (still raining now, argh). Really nice video, thank you for posting ! Be good, be safe !!

Glad you got to see the restored Sylvan Grove depot! Bashan was listed as Barton Station in my KCC records just a side track, same as Edalgo. Shady Bend had a population of 40 in 1910 and had an open RR station until 1939. Yep that was their old mill, looked pretty inaccessible especially with iffy weather. Quartzite is listed as a side track on the UP apparently to some quarries. Lincoln County must have a decent historical society to mark schools. Nice job! You might call this Travel with a Merry-Go-Round Guy
Awesome! Thanks for the info! I saw Quartzite on the map but literally nothing was there so that’s why I didn’t show it. And yes I was very pleased about how well their historical society marked everything!
I was born in Lincoln Ks and we lived in Vesper, went to school in Sylvan Grove Ks till I joined the Army. I have since retired and live in Wyoming> Great job on the video.
Sylvan Grove, my uncle owns a house just north of there. Used to stay there to go deer hunting and also pheasant hunting. We stull go out every year. The county has definitely changed since I was kid.
All of the cemeteries I've seen in your videos are nicely kept except the one in this video where it was a few headstones near a road and the grass was very tall. You'd need an idiot stick (do you know what that is?) to whack down the grass enough to mow it. I had to look up the history of the Moffit Massacre after seeing that marker. Another good video. And yes, we Kansans don't fret too much about the weather.
I would love to know more about the construction of all those stone buildings. I'm sure they used a lot of local labor & equipment, but I bet there were a lot of traveling masons keeping very busy ~100-150 or more years ago with all the small towns that popped up with the homesteading. There's something about quarries that fascinates me. Then to think about all the towns having their population curve ups and downs around the same time frame. Was there a wave of growth from East to West? Probably as the rail lines spread. I wonder what it would be like if we didn't have the dust bowl/depression and WW2 which seem to be the biggest factor in migration to cities.
I’m guessing those buildings were all built from similar plans so yes it would be good work back in the day! The depression and technological advancements in farming hurt populations as well as school consolidation. Fascinating area to explore!
Mostly ghost towns in this country. The groves town was interesting. I hope the squatters don't take the empty Homes in your state. Michigan is a blue state, bringing them in on charter buses. Thanks for sharing
this is why that allamede school sign was such a curiosity for me. those other signs in this video are in front of actual old buildings, that was just out in the middle of nowhere. I wonder why that sign was put up just to indicate where it was
Have you heard of Runnymede Ks.? It's on Hwy 2 N.E. of the town of Harper in Harper County. It has a very interesting history. It was an unincorporated township so it might not meet your criteria for inclusion. There's a plaque on Hwy 2 commemorating it's location.
I think I could handle living in a place like Beverly. i would love to live in adinky place like that. so quiet and peaceful I think. were there any businesses there?
I have a crazy question for you. What are the names of the songs you play on this video? This is a great video and the music makes it very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Hello I'm Corey Peterman and you was out south of Lincoln and you drove past a old limestone house on a curve off off colt drive lol anyhow that was a family called the Murphy's and that's known as Murphy's corner and then you drove up past the liberty school it's all but gone but my dad went to school there his name was Donald petermanI just thought I'd send a comment.
Don't know if you walked around the outside of the Twin Grove School. On the west side there are names, initials and dates carved into the rock by former students.
I love to see those cemeteries that are still tended by locals who mow the lawns and keep things looking good. Speaks well of the people still living in these out of the way places.
The abandoned farmhouse with the wind turbines behind it created a great visual of past v present

I'm from Ottawa County, Kansas. Next door to Lincoln, a lot of ghost towns like Delphos, Barnard, Ada, Lindsey, and many more.
Yes I’m aware of the idiot sticks 😂😂 I’ve found Kansas folks generally a good job with the cemeteries 😊
Twister🌪️
Thank you enjoyable
😊
Great video as are most of them, Love your videos and love that area
Awesome, thank you! 😊
Great series!! Have you considered visiting Mitchell, Jewell, Republic and Cloud counties
Thanks! I'd love to visit them all, but there's not enough time in the day haha. Eventually!
I try to write down all the towns or ghost towns and cemeteries. I remember when you posted the storm behind you on insta. I was scared for you.
Thanks! I’m working on a map for sharing as well. Hopefully later this summer.
Mostly ghost towns in this country. The groves town was interesting. I hope the squatters don't take the empty Homes in your state. Michigan is a blue state, bringing them in on charter buses. Thanks for sharing
Thank you!
Thanks
A picture of a Kansas thunder storm. Some of the grass looked like brome. Looked like the drought , has effected that area also.
I would imagine so too
You should check out Pottawatomie & Wabaunsee counties!❤️✌️
this is why that allamede school sign was such a curiosity for me. those other signs in this video are in front of actual old buildings, that was just out in the middle of nowhere.
I’ve driven through it but haven’t done a video yet!
I think I could handle living in a place like Beverly. i would love to live in adinky place like that. so quiet and peaceful I think. were there any businesses there?
Looked like a couple. But I had to leave quickly.
Keep your finger on the clicker. HE GOES FAST!!

You should check out the Garden of Eden in Lucas. It’s a strange but awesome place.
For sure! Have definitely been there!
I have a crazy question for you. What are the names of the songs you play on this video? This is a great video and the music makes it very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks! All the music is noted in the description of the videos below!
Beverly, KS, interestingly I have relatives from Beverly, WV.

They must have used the golden belt to enforce the Golden Rule which was the name of my grade school
😊
Don't know if you walked around the outside of the Twin Grove School. On the west side there are names, initials and dates carved into the rock by former students.
Cool! I walked around a bit but didn’t notice that unfortunately.
OK, how I see the Rocky Hill sign, I guess those signs aren't as uncommon as I thought
Yeah there were a lot of them. Wish I had a map of them!
🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Explore Callaway County Missouri day 2 asking
Unfortunately I believe that is the first unkept cemetery you’ve come across in rural Kansas
You might be right!
How about telling us some of the places you've had a good meal during your travels.
Sometimes I do but I’m not much of a foodie. I usually eat out of convenience on these trips.
