    For ITA students who want to do cloze exercises or something, I have transcribed the video below for your use!
    DINING OUT
    Lori: Hi I'm Lori, I'll be your waitress today. Can I get you anything to drink?
    Man: Just water.
    Lori: Would you like bottled or regular?
    Man: Regular.
    Lori: And for you?
    Woman: I’ll have a diet soda.
    Lori: Great, I’ll be right back.
    ORDERING
    L: Have you decided what you'd like, or do you need some more time?
    W: I’ll have the grilled chicken and a dinner salad.
    L: And what kind of dressing would you like?
    W: What kind do you have?
    L: Italian, blue cheese, and French.
    W: I’ll have the Italian, and can you serve that on the side?
    L: Of course. And for you, sir?
    M: The peppered salmon, is that very spicy?
    L: Yes…
    M: Oh, I don’t like spicy. I'll have the steak.
    L: And how would you like that cooked?
    M: Medium, please.
    L: All right, so that's chicken with salad, Italian dressing on the side, and one steak, medium.
    W: Yes.
    L: Thank you!
    SERVING
    L: Be careful, it’s hot. Can I get that for you?
    W: Yes please.
    L: And is there anything else I can get you?
    M: May I have a steak knife?
    L: Of course, I’ll get that right away.
    -
    L: How is everything?
    M: Excellent!
    W: Very good.
    L: Great!
    FINISHING THE MEAL
    L: Are you still working on that, or shall I wrap that up for you?
    W: I’m done.
    M: I’ll take this to go.
    L: Would you like a dessert menu?
    M: Yes, please.
    L: Would you like coffee?
    M: Yes.
    W: I’ll have some too.
    L: Cream and sugar?
    M: I’d like some cream.
    W: I’ll have sugar.
    ORDERING DESSERT
    L: Have you decided what you’d like for dessert?
    M: I'll have the chocolate cake.
    L: And for you?
    W: I'll have the cheesecake.
    L: Excellent, I'll be right back.
    GET THE CHECK
    L: Did you enjoy your meal?
    W: It was wonderful.
    L: Can I get you anything else? Or should I get your check?
    M: We'll take the check.
    L: Thank you for coming!

      @sylas yufayyur True! But its also important to see it written out correctly when you are learning :)

    • @embetcher
      @embetcher 2 роки тому

      @sylas yufayyur The person who made this video included subtitles... they intended for them to be seen and read and understood. This is a video for educational purposes, not a real life interaction. It should be written correctly if its included in the video. It is important if someone is writing in English to know the difference between using "to" and "too".

    • @Storm4155
      @Storm4155 9 років тому

      Kyle Cott So, there should not be a question mark after 'check', is that what you are referring to? Also it would be better to say 'have the check' rather than 'take', but maybe that's American English to say 'take the check'.

    • @SkarletBloodthirsty
      @SkarletBloodthirsty 9 років тому

      Storm4155 you can also say "Should I get your bill?"

    • @robbiel296
      @robbiel296 9 років тому

      Storm4155 yeah, this is a common American phrase. At least in the Midwest "I'll take the check" is more common than "I'll have the check" (I often ask "Can I get the check?")

    Advice to the next class: Play this at .75 and it sounds slightly better. Also subtitles do need a rework, but that's been mentioned before. These aren't actors, so its understandably not going to be a quality performance, but there are a few errors which make this not work well for its purpose. It is almost a requirement to slow the playback speed for this to be usable for beginners as the lesson mentions.

    Hi. I teach English in Vietnam. My school concentrates on speaking and listening and for higher level learners we have introduced 4 specific topics: Food and Beverage, Travel, Shopping, and Entertainment/Free Time Activities. Part of the course is for students to do their own study. We are sourcing various videos and audio links which students need to watch or listen to, and then they need to answer questions about it. After seeing your video, I was wondering if it would be possible to use various snippets from it for this self-study segment? Many thanks, Mr D

    • @candacecurry1584
      @candacecurry1584 8 років тому +1

      Often it is, yes. It depends on the type of restaurant.
      High-end/expensive restaurants will expect you to sit for a long time and will not ask you if you want the bill/check.
      Less expensive/more busy restaurants will have many tables throughout the night. Americans do not generally sit for hours like Europeans. Usually the server (we no longer use the term waiter in most big cities) will ask if you would like anything else and you will reply "just the check, thank you" or "just the bill, thank you." Sometimes a server will ask if you would like the check in very casual circumstances.
      Servers are very attentive in North America (they work mostly on tips) and they learn when it is appropriate to ask or not, or sometimes just bring it for "when you are ready to pay". Americans get frustrated when they travel as the custom (in Europe at least) is to leave the customers alone for long stretches of time. This would be considered rude/neglectful in North America, but it is polite in Europe, as they are allowing the customer to enjoy their meal/relax.

    It's a bit embarrassing to watch. I'm thinking of how I order stuff and the waitress having to be all polite about it all...

    Using this video for a class; the content is okay but there’s a grammatical error. They use the wrong form of the word ‘too.’

    I wonder if ITA would still send us to watch this video if they knew the blonde actress was in the film "Bar Hopping Hotties."

    Don`t like the hair hanging over the shoulder. I worked in a restaurant where the waitresses carried the trays on their shoulder and sometimes their hair would a actually touch the food! Sooo gross!
