Considering getting a GPS comm unit. My wife has already decided; get one. She worries. So this review is very helpful. Thanks.

A very nice and necessary piece of gear but I can barely afford my Spot for location tracking and check in.. ATB

I hear you... it's nice to have someway of letting folks know what is going on, but expensive for sure.

I'd be interested in hearing your free mapping advise. I found a nice app that I can load USGS topo maps into, and I've tested it out on some day hikes, but haven't tested it out on a more remote trail yet, but my testing showed it would be really useful since I could just turn off everything except navigation on my phone to save on battery.

I'm needing to get something like this, and have looked at both this one and the Spot-X. The garmin mini just seems really overpriced to me. The spot-x seems like a better plan to me because it seems to offer the location services with the built-in plan, whereas you have to pay an additional $6/mo for the Zoleo. I'm curious whether you just use something else for the location services, or what, as well as what your experience has been since posting this video. I like that the Spot-X is an all-in-one device and that I don't have to use my phone, but if I'm recording or using my phone for mapping (which I would probably be doing), then being able to type messages on the Spot-X without my phone less of an advantage. (There's also the fact that this device seems fairly new, and for solo hiking, you really just want the SOS feature for peace of mind, and I feel like the Spot-X/Garmin are both tried and tested.)
