I'm class of 87. Lifelong hotrodder, dirt oval racer and engine machinist/shop owner. I remember, back in mid to late 80s, all us hotrodders knew the 3 cars in town that ran 13.9s and 1 that ran 13.3 at 105mph in quarter mile. We had about 8 cars in the 14s. Most people were mid 15s with the hotrods at 92 -95 ish mph., while burning 1 tire and pulling 308 rear gears. The 14s cars had 3.73-411 which was the popular gear, if changing. Only a few cars had good stall converters, and again, it was big if you had 1 and word of mouth was our internet (to go along with our pagers, in a drawer I still have a few). We had 1 chevelle, a 1967. Built roller 355, 125 nitrous shot on top of that. With ladder bars and slicks it ran 10.80s and like 1150s on motor. EVERYBODY KNEW THAT CAR IN OUR SURROUNDING 8 TOWNS.😅😂😊
@@1972Ventura455ho Mino was brilliant. He knew every trick in the book to make an engine run to its absolute full potential. Valve jobs, porting, polishing, extrude honing, parasitic weight reduction, etc… Jim was almost cut from the same cloth as Roger Penske lol, the body acid dip king lol.
Back in these days if you drove in off the street and ran in the 13's over 100 mph you were quick and fast. Today's drag racing is crazy with many street cars in the 10's or quicker...just nuts.
Tell me about it...started driving in '78 & had several Trans Ams, 2 Z28s, 1 IROC-Z & they were fast for that time but as a kid in the late 60s & 70s those muscle cars were the kings of the strip even tho todays cars will blister them they just dont do much for me other than the MOPARS
Only problem is these 20 second redeyes and such are just always broken down. It's all over youtube. And waiting 3 months for warranty work. I'd rather go 13s and work on it in my driveway

Crazy what these ars were running, lol!!! I have a high 9 second supercharged 2014 Mustang but right now my 97' 302 swapped Ford Ranger is more along these lines! With power everything and a/c it runs low 13's and the engine is all factory ford stuff including the fuel injection. An Explorer engine with a stock fox Mustang cam. Truck isn't light either at 3540lbs!
The 455SDs were capable of 13s, stock. Not sure why these were only 14s. Love the 12 sec. RAII. And pairing a 68 428CJ shelby, against a 403 olds. 😵💫 @neda films. Thanks for the Pontiac recognition. What yr was these races?
OMG, somebody had the balls to bring a 383 to the track. One thing for sure, a 383 is no muscle car engine, a 440, barely. A 426 Hemi------------------ you betcha.
Ahh yes..the quest for 13 seconds in the 80s/90s. No NOS, No supercharger...just straight up balls. Thanks!

this looked like a Firebird convention. Cars look to be truly showroom stock as well.
I pray that most of these guys still have these beauties.

Wow all beautiful old school muscle cars❤💪👍🙏🙌😎💕
Another great video, brother!
Wow so great to see these. Remember when they all prowled the streets of Chicago
Thx much
Mino did things with that ‘68 Firebird that upset a lot of people. He didn’t get the credit to putting a Pontiac on the map in these races.
The Hard Times Firebird of Truman Fields won a lot more races and got the credit for being the fastest one of those cars for decades.
@@RealDougFieldsI’m talking about these pure stock races not Super stock NHRA.

Everytime I see one of these I get tickled. My 88 GT with shorties, GT-40 heads, E cam, and 4.10s ran a 14.2 @ 99. 2.1 60’.

my friend back in 1989 with his '69 Mustang and performance built 351 was happy to run a 13.89 @ Atco Raceway ..
Had to be a Windsor 351 and not a Cleveland.

Uhh no. They made 754 Torino Talladegas. But with the 428CJ pretty rare.

426 was only 350 hp net at 5,000 or 365 net at 6,000. 2023 5.7 is 385 net horsepower.
455 HO, NOT a Super Duty
There was a Super Duty 455 in 1973 and 74 only found in the Trans Am and Formula. The film is too blury to see the shaker hood.
Rhe video had both an HO and SD. I'm surprised how slow the SD was
