2007-2012 Yukon Denali Rear Door Lock Actuator Replacement

- Rear door lock actuator replacement done on a 2009 GMC Yukon Denali. This process should be identical for Silverado, Avalanche, Yukon, Escalade, and Denali vehicles, years 2007 through 2012. I purchased via GM Parts Direct, supply your VIN to verify your parts. The US made vs Mexico made vehicles have different parts. I paid about $100 for each actuator, and the dealer quoted near to $200. Dealer quoted 1.5 hours labor per door, it took me about 25 minutes.
Tools needed:
-T30 Torx Bit
-10mm Socket
-6 to 8 inch socket extension
-Needle Nose pliers
-Small flat head screwdriver
-Optional - plastic putty knife (for prying off door panel)
I watched just for removing door panel because my outside handle was broken. Thank you very much for the video! Great job! To many ppl making videos talking about the job then petting their cat, saying hi to the neighbors. .. Then little more on the job, you were right to the point I was done in 30! Thanks again!
No problem Benjamin, that's why I ended up making the video. I was looking for one, and just found people talking about doing the job, but not showing it. Thanks again.
I just did this to my 08 GMC Yukon XL while watching your video. It was a huge help! Thank you!
thanks so much James. Just got an 08 Chevy Silverado and the passenger front door wasn't working. 60 or 70 bucks on Amazon, plus your video made this a piece of cake. thanks so much for taking the time to do this.
This how you make a video...lots of detail, great shots. thanks for taking the time to help the rest of us out!
Thanks for creating this tutorial, James. I used it yesterday to replace the front right door lock actuator on our 2009 Cadillac Escalade Platinum and it went smoothly. The door now works perfectly.
My symptoms were that my front right (passenger) door lock would not always unlock or lock with the remote or door controls.
For those of you considering replacement, it was pretty simple with this video. I purchased the part on Amazon for $75 and completed within an hour. After doing this once, I could replace the remaining in 30 minutes. Taking the door apart and getting the part in and out were the most challenging parts. I read a few forums, which state that the dealerships charge around $400 per door, so I saved $325 by doing it myself (if you had to do all 4 doors, it would save you $1300 to do it yourself).
Here is the part list for my 2009 Cadillac Escalade Platinum:

I'm having the same issue as you. Doors lock sometimes or the don't lock all the way. And if I press the master control a few times, it seems as if the power dies. Rear passenger side does work at all so I know I need at least 1 actuator replaced. Will be ordering 1 and we see what happens.
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!
I had been postponing this task on my 09 Avalanche for months but today decided to tackle it. Much to my horror the YT vid that I had watched b4 and had a complete tear down like yours had been deleted!
Found other vids of people just standing there babbling about how it's done but not showing anything. Why make a video?
Yours is well done with plenty of info. Congrats to you and the family for making such a great video. Keep 'em coming.
Great Video!!! Took 1 hour for both doors. Better than the 250 per door the dealer charges.
James,
Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
I have an 07 Tahoe which had three of the four doors out. Was driving me nuts and wasn't about to part with the $600 in labor i was quoted to get them fixed on an 8 year old ride. Fear of making the problem worse kept me from pulling the doors apart myself. The visuals on this video made it a pretty simple repair. All three doors took about 4 hours - and that was with having to drill out 2 of the door jamb screws after stripping them out....because I'm too cheap to but the foreign fitting tools.
Thanks again.

Thanks for the detailed video and explanation James, no way would I have tackled this without it. Got both doors replaced on my 2008 Yukon Denali and if anything it was easier than yours. A couple very minor differences but nothing big. Very cute how your kids are your crew, they did a great job too!
This is great James! Saved me a bundle (had to do both rear doors on my '08 Yukon XL). Your detail work was the key to making it a success. Kudos to the kids for helping out.
you the man. i have a 2008 escalade and the rear passenger lock stopped working your video is clear and precise nice job and Thank you. this will make my life much easier again Thanks for posting
Just FYI, this video also works for crew cab Silverado and GMC Seirra. 2008-2013. The location and style of the inside door handle is a little different but everything else is the same.
Thanks again for the good video.
Way to go buddy! Just had twin babies, and daycare is like the cost of an expensive sports care, like lotus! Anyway, order the parts online from GMPartsShop for about $117. bucks. Installed exactly according to your instructions, and it works perfect! Thanks again. My first attempt to fix this before watching your video, I was intimidated enough to almost give up, after getting the panel off, and just looking at it and trying to figure out how it works! Nice Video cam work too! A+++
Great video. I don't have door lock issues. But my rear passenger door panel kept pooping off. Turns out the door actuator cable was routed wrong and pressing out on the door panel. Took all of 10 minutes to fix after watching this video. My vehicle is a 2008 Escalade EXT.
Nice video man, I appreciate you taking time to make it. Lock went out today on my wife's 09 tahoe LTZ. I will have this video with me in my shop as I replace her lock actuator this week. Again, thanks a ton!!
Excellent video, just replaced an actuator in my Escalade. My wife is very happy. Thanks for doing the video....
Excellent video! Very clear and to the point. I also watched just for the door panel removal. Thanks for taking the time to do this. Much appreciated!!
Same issues with my passenger side doors front and back in my 08 Tahoe. Parts are on the way here so hopefully it goes smoothly. Great video thanks for the help, saving me time and definitely $$
+Nick Bezon How'd that work out? I need to do the same for my 08 Tahoe.
Awesome Video -it really helped me and mine is an 08 GMC Sierra; very similar. Just a few helpful tips: test your new actuator before closing up the door panel, if you don't have much room and getting the cable out is a pain, just cut it and then remove the end after you get the panel away -your new actuator has a new cable. And last, be sure any J-clips are tight in their proper places before snapping your panel back in, they can move around and your bolts won't thread back in. The hardest part to this is not galling up the soft plastic covers; I used a fine, sharp knife tip and carefully took my time. I paid the Dealer $300 to do the Drivers side and six months later, the passenger side went out. This truck just turned 30K miles and is used very little, so if you have a GM Truck, you'll need to know how to do this. Part: $125 on EBay for factory GM. Rock-On!
Great video. Worked perfectly on the left rear door on a 2009 Chevy Silverado crew cab. Part was $95 on Amazon.com. Local Chevy dealer wanted $264 for this. Did it in 30 minutes with the help of this video. Total cost - $95. Yes!! Thank you!!
not sure if I could do it until I watch this video took me 25 minutes to remove and reinstall the actuator unit works great thanks for the video
Great video, thank you!
I had one minor complication. When I was putting the actuator back into the door I found out that the cable to the handle was too short. Guess I got a slightly wrong part. The fix was to just use the cable from the old actuator. I just used a pair of needle nose pliers to get the clip off the end of the actuator.
I have the same issues with my 2007 Yukon Denali XL...Great instructional video... Good camera work.. Nice assist from your son, too!
This video was made with sincere intention to help. It is clear, to the point, with details. Thanks for sharing the knowledge. And thanks to the kids for helping. I have a problem with the two backdoors in an Escalade 2009. I can definitely use this video to figure out how to proceed.
Hey Sam. Should be almost exactly the same on the Escalade... Good luck.
Replaced the two backdoor actuators with no problems. Thanks a million James for this video.

Excellent video... was a great help. I had to change a handle on a caddilac Escalade EXT and it was the same procedure.
THanks for the great help!
Bob
Great Job, made it look super easy and more than likely probably comparable to cars as well as the suv's!
Great video, easy job to follow along with. Only way it could be better is if you let me know it would start pouring as soon as I took my door apart lol. Really nice job man.
Good video man. I have a 2009 GMC Sierra 2500HD. They wanted more for labor here in Az. The part, cheapest I could find was 105.00 plus $13.00 shipping...they always screw on shipping....Anyway, great video.
Thank you for the video, I plan on doing this to both rear doors this weekend.
I appreciate you buddy, god bless you! I used this video as a help how to open up my door from inside so that I can push the small dent out. thanks alot man. KEEP IT UP .
Very good video, I'll be changing one out on a 2010 Chevy Silverado front driver door. Very useful and helpful, thank you!
OUTSTANDING VIDEO... thx .. you saved me a ton of time and money ...
Very nice thank you
I hope to send another section illustrating the decoding handle interior decoration for the door handle, which is why drivers
Another place to get parts is from a junk yard where sometimes you might find a car with new parts after someone had a accident with a car.
Another way to learn how things on a car works or come apart on a car is go to a junk yard and on the car you need to fix is take the parts off a car you need to fix and you gain confidence in how things work or come apart on a car.
Thanks for the video, replaced mine this weekend.
Thanks for this! Really helped me. Took 30 min for both doors!
thanks for the video AND the clear explanation
I saved a lot of money, thanks to you
Great Video!!!
Easy to follow. thanks for taking the time and saving mine and money.
Good video! My rear door is not locking completely on my '08 Suburban when I hit the electronic door locks. I'll use these initial steps to take a look inside. Know of any videos to replace the rear liftgate electronic motorized latch? That is my main task, liftgate is just lying closed, not latched/ing at all, very dangerous for driving!
Thank you sir for providing this incredible video!
Great video very thoroughly done
Thanks James. Very thorough!
i checked the dealer and they wanted 360$ a door. ridiculus!thanks for posting the video, ill just do it myself.
awesome.. just did this today with your help!
I noticed the little plastic inserts looked like they broke off when the panel was removed, so you may want to get some new ones before you start the job. The little push in ribbed fasteners.
Great video.... Have 2009 Tahoe with rear driver door actuator not working.... Think I will TRY to change it myself. Thank you for all your trouble.
Nice video. I am not sure what is wrong with mine. When I purchased my used 2011 Yukon XL Denali (5 yrs old at time of purchase), unbeknownst to me, the back door locks did not lock most of the time. Five years later, I managed to get them to lock one day recently. When I hit the lock button several times in a row, it makes no noise, maybe some on the first hit or two. Sometimes I can get it to lock by locking/unlocking/locking etc. Not sure if it is the actuator. Other things I read about was bad fuse, and also found instructions on "resetting locks". Given this info, any thoughts on the matter is appreciated! .... before I tackle it. Also, can I just use a tester to see if the actuator or motor is good, (have to take it out to test it, right? ... hey, I'm the mechanics wife! and I also try to fix stuff on my own sometimes)
thanks for your detailed video. we all thank you!!
Awesome video! Thanks a bunch!
Here is where I ran into difficulty. On his he just pops out the Lock Assembly Rod - mine went through the actuator then turned hard right on the other side. Trying to get it out I broke the rod. A trick would be to remove the old actuator with the rod still attached (its tight but you can.) Then attach it before putting back in the door.
thanks the Explanation is very useful and greetings to the little hero
Very helpful instructional video. I am looking for video on how to replace a passenger seat handle on 2008 GMC Yukon. Any insight you may have is appreciated. Thanks!
finally a nice video showing the steps to change the lock! One video I watched the guy just fucking explained where the lock was located! Pretty sure anyone attempting this repair knows that much! no video doing it! Complete waste of time UNLIKE this great video!
Thank you!
Thanks for this!!
great video and good job
thanks! this video is exactly what I needed! what is the part #? I have a 2009 escalade ext.
Thanks for the video brotha !
Thanks buddy, is a great video!!!!
Wonderful
Thanks a lot I like your video I really like Canadian eng Americans
God bless you man, thanks
I have a 08 Chevy Tahoe and I only have two bolts on on the top and the bottom one I don't have 3 is that bad
Where's the best place to buy the part nowadays?
Do you know how you can get the door open if the actuator is stuck in the "locked" position? There is no way of getting the door open from inside/outside handles. I use to able to push on the door from the outside until there was a "click" and then be able to open the door. Any information would be helpful.
Thanks.
Ok great video but can anyone help? I have a 2007 escalade ext, I think both rear actuators went out after my doors were shut. My locks go up n down so the locks work but when unlocked the actuators will not release the door so they are froze shut inside handle and outside handle will not release the door to open it. Anyone know how to get my doors open if the actuator will not release it😖😖😖, any advise would be great, thank you
Useful video thanks
Thanks!
Forgot to mention to release the manual lock actuator tab. - pull up on lock then pry into slot to release.
I replaced the door lock actuator but it still doesn’t unlock
I wonder if this is the fix for my problem. 08 Yukon doors lock & unlock intermittently. Passenger rear door doesn't work at all. Seems like after I press the driver's master control a few times, the power dies. Drivers door doesn't look all the way. Unlocks fine. It seems electrical.
mine did that. would press it a couple times and it seemed like it would die, like there was a capacitor that was drained. I just changed the actuator and it works flawlessly
Thank you!
thanks!
I have some issue but looks the loss am not sure if actuator if need to be replace or may be door need to be adjut little
ford
lifesaver!!
anyone have a part number for this actuator? I can find both fronts, and right rear, but I cannot find the part number for the left rear. Thank you!
I have a question, why did you replace the part? I have a 03 Suburban and my " Right Rear Door Ajar" is on and will not go off, and after some research, I have learned that the actuator may be the problem, so I was wondering what issues you were having, thanx
Hey Seth, the door actuators were not locking or unlocking the door. I purchased the truck with them that way, and the dealer wanted $300 per foot to fix it.... figured I could do it instead.
Hey Seth. Did you ever replace the actuator in that right rear door? If so did that fix the problem? I'm having the same issue. Thanks.
James Shackelford we got lucky, and noticed it when we bought our 08 Avalanche over the weekend. They fixed it free of charge. Good to know that it may happen again, and how to fix it. Thanks!
Knuckle buster
James, what website did you get the actuators on, I was doing some searching and couldn't find the prices or expensive prices. Just in case someone else asked and I skipped over the answer I do apologize. thanks, 3 of 4 is acting up and I want to tackle it before I am somewhere and end up being locked out my truck. I am overseas so I have to order.
How did you know that it needed replacing? I'm having some trouble. My door doesn't unlock sometimes. Was this your symptom?
This is useless. Not one video on Suburban back door handle
+Kevin Althouse I would disagree. Have a 2007 suburban and this video HELPED a ton in removing and re-installing the new part.
