This week's video is something a little different, we're going to make vegan friendly edible horror movie props; perfect for the compassionate cannibal! I was acting in an indie horror film, and the director asked me to make some prop brains for one of the scenes. I accepted the challenge with relish! I've never made anything like this before, so I knew it would be a great opportunity to have a go at something new. A few months ago, I'd tried to make a vegan halloumi cheese, and though that experiment fail, I had landed on a combination/ratio of ingredients that looked very organ-like.
Both the blood and brains are 100% edible and vegan, and will make grusomely great Halloween party decorations!

Welcome to my kitchen (lab?)
My channel is you watching the results of my 2am thoughts of “I wonder what would happen if I put A with B?” The answers lean heavily towards cake, and my ongoing quest to find a good meat substitute. I’m a vegan that loves animal products, but hates what’s involved; so I’ve dived headfirst into a rabbit hole of different plant-based textures and flavours. These are often the 1st time that I’ve tried a recipe, and I’ll talk you through why I’m using the ingredients and what I think happened when things go wrong.
Grab a vessel of whatever makes you happy and enjoy, but be warned; it’s messy here sometimes!

- Carrageenan types; do small test batch if not using kappa! They all set differently
- Important note on sugar; in the US, it’s filtered with bone char, so not vegan! Look for organic sugar
- I’m not sure how much good the glycerine and glucose did in there… It definitely didn’t stop crystallisation, as per my update. Maybe I needed much more?
- If you make the blood too thin, you could try thickening it with cornstarch, but it will be slightly cloudy. Potato starch or arrowroot are clear. I wonder if it’s even possible to make the full batch from potato starch/arrowroot and water?
- Extracts and heat: dolcefoglia.com/blogs/flavor-recipe-blogs/extracts-in-baking#:~:text=Some%20extracts%20are%20more%20heat,when%20exposed%20to%20high%20temperatures.
- Why no corn syrup in UK/EU?: www.livestrong.com/article/464851-why-is-high-fructose-corn-syrup-banned-in-europe/
- For extra realism, instant coffee granules make for great little blood clots. Only use this if “the victim” has been dead/had the injury long for blood to coagulate
- I wonder if it’s possible to steam mixture in moulds; pour the unheated mixture in, and then steam until set. My only concern is that the starch and carrageen may settle at the bottom… That said, because the glutinous rice flour starts to thicken straight away, that may suspend the other powders quite well
Brilliantly done Rachel! It was nice to work with you on another production!☺Thank you and all the best!
Amazing to be onboard, I can't wait to see the results!
@@AuntieRachelsChaoticKitchen Definitely... It's going to look great Rachel☺!
So creepy. Good looking props! You still mad fine.
My apologies but I never pegged you as a horror fan. My crush has risen 120%
Dude, my first crush was Freddy Kruger!
Really? I always got "Resident Evil" fan girl gamer vibes from her.
Never really been a fan of shooters. Romping around with a mahoosive sword is my happy place
@AuntieRachelsChaoticKitchen compensating? Lol
No, but I feel you on that. I know it's not in the same category but that's why I liked Jedi: Fallen Order, and Jedi: Survivor
@@AuntieRachelsChaoticKitchen yeah, I guess I do sort of remember you raving about Fable back in the day. And those Uncharted games too.
Great vid - very interesting. What was the approx cost per litre?
Thanks bruv! I'd say no more than £2.50, but I don't know how much the colouring gels cost, so it's hard to pin down a more exact figure
is this food or some body brain 🤣
Food, Your Honour, honest 🤭
