All this progressive metal shit sucks…they aren’t dream theater. Stick to what tf you know. This isn’t hard to understand. Everything he said was spot on. This was a troll album.
Every way you described this album sounds amazing. Broadway clown in field of demons meets fish in space with thin guitars?!? Weird Al avant garde metal? Hideous jazz metal? Might have to buy it today.
It is great, the more I listen to it the more I love it, there's only one song on it I dislike. Honestly might become my favorite album by them. For reference, there's a song on this that starts off sounding like AIC then suddenly genre swaps to some drugged out Beatles shit, and a song that sounds like a 50s big band crooner song that turns to batman music at random. Shit's wild.
@bensmith6192 Is it Easier? That's the only song that doesn't click with me so far, the southern rock solo at the end makes me feel like it's from self titled era and I can appreciate it but it's been a skip for me lately
@@leoflow2290 Game Over is the one I dislike. The vocals on the prechorus and chorus sound really out of key to my ear. Makes it really hard for me to get through. I love Easier, the lofi eq used on the vocals during the verses bothers me a little though, sounds like Matt is singing into a pillow, I think it'd sound much better with a standard bright eq. I love the intentionally autotuned chorus and synth in it.

I also love this album and the exploration of sounds. I have been listening nonstop, lots to take in. I disagree with Anthony on pretty much every prog metal album. He does not like the genre, he has straight up said so. Music is subjective.
I like avenged sevenfolds early work like seize the day and stuff. But this and the Lil Pump review are my favorite negative reviews this year in terms of comedy. For positives it would be the Mac De Marco one Wayne G, JpegDannyMafiaBrown, 100 Gecs, Snow Strippers and Lana Del Ray.

As a long-time A7X fan, I think the album is an interesting take from them, and it's not bad, I just don't like it, if that makes sense. I don't think there's anything about it that makes it a bad album, I actually think it pulls off what it's trying to do pretty well, it's just not my kind of music. There are some songs that I don't mind, but others I can't stand. It's a very ambitious album, that's for sure, and I have a feeling they knew that some of their fans were going to hate it. They did say that their new album was going to sound nothing like their previous stuff, and I think they nailed that one. Just not what I like listening to. Me remembering when M Shadows said on his podcast that they aim to make every album as different as possible from the last one and each album needs to find its own audience: “Well. Guess he isn’t part of this albums audience. Oh well.” I love this album. Cosmic is easily one of the most gorgeous songs I’ve heard in my life. It seems to me that most of the criticism of this album is “it’s not like their other albums.” It’s very reminiscent of when City of Evil came out and was equally despised. I’m glad A7X doesn’t give a rats ass about the criticism of their albums. It makes their music more different and more beautiful.
thats... that's not at all what his review said? he didn't make a single comment about it not sounding like the other albums, in fact he literally said he just doesn't care much about the other albums at all. the bulk of the criticism was "it's trying to do so many things and doing none of them particularly well" which is an incredibly accurate assessment of the album
Yeah city of evil truly was the start of their genre jumping and then the self titled album went way further. Idk why it’s a surprise to anyone. I’d prefer this to a nightmare or hail to the king copy even though I like those albums
What you talking about? City of Evil wasn't despised, City of Evil and the singles bat country etc is where they gained most of there fanbase and what launched there career to headlining festivals and selling out stadiums

Honestly, the weirdness is what makes it stand out. A lot of rock/metal bands usually go the Imagine Dragons route when they’re this far along in their careers, so I gotta give A7X credit for mixing it up. That being said, this album is one you will either really love or really hate. No in between.
I'm inbetween, it think it's decent, yeah a decent steady release from A7X. Some of the weird stuff worked for me, some of the stuff didn't. Anthony really didn't need to make it sound like it's one of the worst metal albums ever though.

Based off of We love you, I thought I was gonna absolutely hate this album. But then I listened to the album in its entirety and I really liked it. The way that the songs are put out there is what makes me love them, the message not only transfered by lyrics but by music as well. This is by far their darkest album yet if you listing to it very close
M. Shadows had a throat injury so that's probably what effected the vocals. Also they do hate Warner and only went back over legal matters, I think this is exactly the reaction A7X wanted. It's always a pleasure to hear Mr. Goldbloom rant and cry.

After everything thats happened with the band, and Matt Shadows 2019 break, it makes sense to me. Each song comes together in a cohesive fashion. Respect the opinion tho and hope you find something to enjoy eventually. Fully reccomend Nik Nocturnals interview with Matt Shadows he paints the picture of the album very well IMO.
Great interview and thought Nik’s full review he put out very recently was well said. Can’t believe even he put the critiques more nicely and understood more of what the album was going for than Melon lmao
@Juan Jose Campos I did too, it felt like Nik's review gave more context to the bands vision and the general sound of a track. Something I think is more beneficial than not when talking about the music.
There are a couple reasons for the vocals being "bad." Some of it is just production choices, but M Shadows has also had some very bad vocal injuries from screaming and he's had to spend literally 7 years recovering. People have been saying he sounds whiny and whispery, but honestly I feel like his vocals are very good in this album. Idk man to each their own.
Yeah, that's definitely a fact that a lot of people overlook, but us real death bats know that's contributing to the evolution of their musical choices. And I'm pretty sure any real fans of avenged sevenfold appreciate and love the new album for what it is I for one do. After receiving the CD in the mail for my pre-order on Amazon and listening to it on repeat for 3 days straight, I quickly bought the limited edition vinyl because I didn't want to miss out on the opportunity to get it and I absolutely love this record. Personally, I see why some people don't like it, They are just expecting the same. Similar sounding album turned out release after release, but for those of us that know the band on a personal basis and have been listening from the beginning. Know how unique the direction they're going with. Their music is constantly evolving and putting out the kind of music they want to make, not just churning out the same. Similar sounding screaming album just to please the fairweather fans. In My opinion this album is more relevant than anything out there right now with its theme of AI and computer intelligence which is basically very relevant today with AI models such as chat GPT. In my opinion, if they kept pumping out the same heavy metal metallica-esque screaming album year after year, they're relevancy would fade away. But by continuing to evolve and putting out unique albums, it keeps them relevant and fresh and it makes them want to continue making music. I also kind of got the impression that then going with a more funky sounding album was kind of a nod to their band. Pinkly smooth that they had with Rev way back in the day.
Those injuries were before Nightmare though, right? He switched up his scream and got some vocal coaching and IMO he sounded better than ever for the next few albums. To each his own, but I think he can do much better even now if he just accepted his maturing vocal range and style. I really do think he sounds best in Cosmic when he just chills the hell out for a second and stops audibly straining himself
@@themoosemooseV2 I believe he has experienced multiple vocal injuries because the one that I know about and I have a personal connection to because I had purchased tickets to watch them live at the White River amphitheater which was sometime after they released hail to the king but a year or two before the stage. But I'm assuming he probably had issues with it before then too, which might be what you're referring to.
@@themoosemooseV2 I just watched a podcast a few hours ago with Matt on it and the interviewer said he thought this album had more screaming on it than any other album that had released prior to waking the fallen. I put it up next to Waking the Fallen as their best career work
Joke aside idk why I’m surprised by this review but the album is fucking sick imo, and a very unique sound from A7X. It’s most certainly worth the listen and I think cosmic is a literal perfect song
"Complete Failure" was a bit on the nose, I agree with you. I do get his viewpoint, but the way he said it could've been less harsh. He was likely still overwhelmed from how crazy the album was though XD
that's the thing about fantano. He said in a video he listens to albums at least a couple times before doing a review. well I think he does not do that anymore. I don't think he even listened to the whole songs start to finish
This album is definitely a grower. It's a bit of a headscratcher on first listen as it's so out of left-field, but subsequent listens are really excellent. You know what it's about, and approach it on the album's own terms. It's a genuine masterpiece of an album.
If The Room was a album. That’s what this felt like to listen to. The production on the vocals alone make me want to turn it off. I'd argue that they made some of the best thrash metal in recent years and brought a bit of a fresh air to the genre that has been stale for decades now.
This might be their "Pet Sounds". It's the total opposite of phoning it in, which they could easily do at this point in their careers. I really appreciate it. And some of the musicianship is mind blowing.
M shadows had throat surgery in 2002 following their first album which consisted of mostly screaming. He’s had voice problems throughout the years and at one point the doctors even said he’d never be able to sing again. So props to Matt for even doing this, even if his vocals sound off
@@SupermanComplex9in 2018 he had some complications with his vocal cords, which is a way more recent reason as to why. The surgery story isn't even true in the first place either lol Matt has debunked it many times
It's not that his voice sounds damaged or beyond it's peak, it's his Eddie Vedder kinda vocal inflections on this album that make it borderline parody for me
I saw this album as avenged sevenfold doing what they do, they change and adapt over time. After the loss of their drummer and the lead singer’s vocal issues, they were lead down a path that fit their skill set better. I see this album as very disorganized but each track grew on me when I originally didn’t like most. I love when bands just go way out of their style like this because it shows how much they can really branch out. I love this album ❤
You're giving them credit for changing but you seem to suggest that trying something new is enough to make it good. It sounds truly terrible and not just because its experimental but they simply don't have the musical or technical skill do what they're trying to do and who knows what that is. It sounds like absolute shit and anybody who doesn't think so is a fool.
It's a lot like Diamonds in The Rough. It was very experimental, and it had some big misses. It also had some great songs, and you heard those come through on Nightmare. I feel the same about this one. Some of em are my least favorite they've done, and some are as good as ever. Avenged does not make their songs for Fantano, or even for their fans. They make it for themselves. They have done Hardcore, Thrash, Nu-Metal, Classic Metal, etc. But they have always been, at their core, progressive. Everything they do will make someone mad.

@@notoriousstrikes4284 remember NOT GOOD≠0. Its not the worst score a review can get. A 5/10 could be a NOT GOOD. NOT GOOD just means Anthony can't find anything positive to say.
@@DwWarWolf Yeah I just believe there are positive things to say. I don't like it overall, but at least it's trying to make something new while still using familiar tropes. Thank you for helping me keep perspective though. I did automatically think that a NOT GOOD was equitable to a 0, but I forgot that he said that it wasn't before. I would switch the Sleep Token and Avenged Sevenfold scores. The Sleep Token to me is all borrowed material with an over dramatic presentation, but at least with this album you can feel actual feelings and ideas sparsely
@@notoriousstrikes4284its a fucking terrible album. genuinely annoying and painful to listen to, and it never had a chance of being okay after those singles. seven years since the last release, drops one of the worst albums of all time. it deserves less than a not good
Enjoyed the album after sitting with it for a few days. Its something entirely different for the band and I think it pays off.

A7x fans: musical masterpiece 🤯
Hell yeah its a masterpiece
yes it is indeed a musical masterpiece
@@ksj2936 M Shadows could fart in a microphone and his entire fanbase would lose their minds
@@piercedcrimson1as an a7x fan yeah we have our little dicksuckers but its mostly just middle aged men that like the music tbh
Also I agree that the vocals on easier are NOT good. Not my favorite.
And they had to cancel a few of their tour dates. One of which was the concert I had bought tickets to. I was refunded and he put out a PR note apologizing and explaining the vocal cord situation. But I'm assuming he probably had issues with it before then too, which might be what you're referring to.
@@themoosemooseV2 I just watched a podcast a few hours ago with Matt on it and the interviewer said he thought this album had more screaming on it than any other album that had released prior to waking the fallen. Although I feel personally like hail to the king and nightmare had a little bit more screaming then life is but a dream.

I just don’t understand how you can enjoy music if you have to listen to it at the same time as a video of Melon’s review to figure out if you’re allowed to like it or not. Sounds like you’re more focused on making sure your opinion matches Anthony’s instead of making an opinion by yourself like a big boy
I just had a full spiritual experience being baffled at how much I loved this album, only for my next recommended video to be this NOT GOOD review and that is brilliant to me.
It's such an emotional experience for me too tbh. I thought it was simply amazing
I honestly find this review comical as to how wrong it is lol
sounding like a fish out of water in space gaining momentum as it orbits around jupiter and rocketing back into earth cracking it in half feels like a compliment for a metal album
This album felt curated for me. It had influences from a lot of music I enjoy like Daft Punk, Pink Floyd, 80’s metal, 90’s hard rock, 2000’s screaming, and some Beach Boys and Frank Sinatra, all while still sounding like an Avenged Sevenfold album. I put it up next to Waking the Fallen as their best career work
Agreed.
this album sucks ass
If you like that music than why do you want to hear it butchered? Lol

Man I loved this album. I don’t think it’s to fair to peg this as a complete failure. I understand not liking it but still
"Complete Failure" was a bit on the nose, I agree with you. I do get his viewpoint, but the way he said it could've been less harsh. He was likely still overwhelmed from how crazy the album was though XD
SAME this album was so goddamn good, personally loved the rollercoaster it took me on
Shame on a7x for wasting so many people's time with this record.
no i think its completely fair. dogshit record

First listen of the album i was a bit disappointed, all the other listens after it easily became one of my favourite albums. Its too good
that's the thing about fantano. He said in a video he listens to albums at least a couple times before doing a review. well I think he does not do that anymore. I don't think he even listened to the whole songs start to finish
This guy is a clown that knows nothing about music
This album is definitely a grower. It's a bit of a headscratcher on first listen as it's so out of left-field, but subsequent listens are really excellent. You know what it's about, and approach it on the album's own terms. It's a genuine masterpiece of an album.
No.
@midastheunwise2423 I just can't with this. I have listened to it 3 separate times completely and it's just a complete miss for me
If The Room was a album. That’s what this felt like to listen to. The production on the vocals alone make me want to turn it off. By the time you get to the end of the album you don’t know or care anymore what’s even coming out the speakers. I am struggling to even understand who this album is even for? I guess if your into The Shaggs this might be for you.
I don’t even love this album, but I’m convinced Fantano didn’t even listen to the last song if he’s describing it as “ragtime-y esque.”

I can think im a carrot, it doesnt mean i succeeded at being a carrot
This is sort of like King Gizzard making thrash metal for people who don't listen to any decent thrash metal.

So props to Matt for even doing this, even if his vocals sound off
I think it enhances his performances even more though, raspy and painful but still smooth and able to hit the highs.
I like that 21 years later folks are still using this as an excuse for these vocal.s
@@SupermanComplex9in 2018 he had some complications with his vocal cords, which is a way more recent reason as to why. The surgery story isn't even true in the first place either lol Matt has debunked it many times
It's not that his voice sounds damaged or beyond it's peak, it's his Eddie Vedder kinda vocal inflections on this album that make it borderline parody for me
He sounds incredible live now, check out their recent shows
I saw this album as avenged sevenfold doing what they do, they change and adapt over time. After the loss of their drummer and the lead singer’s vocal issues, they were lead down a path that fit their skill set better. I see this album as very disorganized but each track grew on me when I originally didn’t like most. I love when bands just go way out of their style like this because it shows how much they can really branch out. I love this album ❤
yeah, they change over time a lot... unfortunately, not for good
@@fartalone3142 subjective
@@Lightning_ausI mean… so is everything the original comment said. Kind of a dumb argument when nearly everything we say in a music discussion is going to be subjective…
