Our new film of Shakespeare’s romantic tragedy, in which desire, dreams and destiny collide, brings to life the remarkable backstage spaces of the National Theatre. Here we go behind the scenes with the cast and creative team to see how they made it. It was made possible by support we received from people like you.
Romeo & Juliet premiered for free on 9pm Sunday 4 April 2021 on Sky Arts (UK) and 9pm Friday 23 April 2021 on PBS (US).

Romeo and Juliet risk everything to be together. In defiance of their feuding families, they chase a future of joy and passion as violence erupts around them.
Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose, Judy) and Josh O’Connor (The Crown, God’s Own Country) play Juliet and Romeo. The award-winning cast includes Tamsin Greig, Fisayo Akinade, Adrian Lester, Lucian Msamati, Deborah Findlay.
Presented by Sky Arts, PBS Great Performances and No Guarantees, Romeo & Juliet is produced by the National Theatre, in association with Sabel Productions and Cuba Pictures.

Just finished watching the production on TV. Everyone involved should be so proud of what they have accomplished. Can't wait to see a live performance at the National Theatre again.

This is also so wonderful for those of us who don't live in the UK (I'm in Australia) & who wish dearly that we could see some of the absolutely brilliant stage productions over there!! I love the occasional National Theatre Live cinema releases that we occasionally get in our movie theatres, but your Romeo & Juliet production is a brand new, amazing way of bringing wonderful live theatre to those of us who cannot attend in person. Thank you once again!!!

How fitting and wonderful it is for the theatre to no longer be 'on autopilot', bravely venturing forth. Klpac (Malaysia) went on a very similar journey with the theatre+film Unity (1918) this year. The parallels, especially on the creative side, are heartwarming. Artists everywhere making magic out of scarcity. That for me is the wonder of theatre.

@@Serai3 it was on sky arts near Easter it was only on for 2 days which is a shame. Hopefully they will put it on here. It was the same for me I had to go searching for it.

I just finished this film and I thought it was wonderful. This was such an interesting way to tell this story. It allowed me to really take in the story in a different way, and I absolutely loved the cast.
It was absolutely incredible, I’m still thinking about it a week later and will be for some time ❤️

One point. On stage it always easier to accept older actors playing the teen lovers - on film it can be a major challenge for an audience. Josh and Jessie are both in their 30's - so that's a big obstacle to overcome.
It's not a barrier if you don't marry yourself to a pre-conceived idea of the age of the characters
But they both act so well I could not care less about their age.🥰
stellar cast, fantastic performances but in my opinion too heavy handed with the cuts. i get it was an adaption for TV under tight restricions and constraints but to cut such legendary speeches as well as so much of the development of romeo and juliets relationship made it feel rushed. otherwise wonderful
This was horrible. The actors just read their lines with no emotion. The narrator did a better job. The Capulet Masked Ball was a disaster. I had to shut it off. Can the NT do anything right ⁉️🤔
