My dad worked at Union Camp paper mill for many years. Every year, they had a big party outdoors and gave away unlimited amounts of free food. Chicken, burgers, hot dogs, basically any kind of backyard cookout style food you can imagine, and free drinks. It was a big highlight of our year, going to this big party because of all the free food and they had all kinds of games setup for employees and their kids to play. International Paper bought the mill, and after the ownership changed to IP, the parties stopped :( Union Camp gave the impression that it actually cared about its employees and did things for them. They even helped my dad pay for college. After IP took over though, ALL of those perks and benefits dried up, they started mass firing campaigns... It was awful. My dad wasn't fired and kept his job because he had written about half the software that the plant ran on at that point and he knew the ins and outs of all the machines and computer programs better than anyone, but eventually he quit because he said the work environment really changed. It used to be a lot more laid back, casual, and enjoyable, but IP turned everything on its head and it just became stressful and tedious to work there. I'll never forgive International Paper. They are a perfect example of what a company does when it has no competition anymore.
Worked many, many years ago at Celuloza Kwidzyn, Poland, now International Paper Kwidzyn. Most people have very little idea about paper industry - for them it's just a piece of paper, cardboard that gets thrown into garbage container. They have no idea how much water, wood, energy, chemicals is needed to make sheet of A4 that goes into their printers.
