Spike always wanted his soul back. The dialogue is vague for the audience's sake, but that was what he wanted.
As others have said, Spike did want his soul. The dialogue during the trials was written vaguely so that viewers who don't think about it too much will have the gut assumption that he wants to get the chip removed. That allows them to do the twist cliffhanger ending. The chip already didn't recognize Buffy as human, so he was capable of killing her if that was his immediate goal.
That Spike's wish was a monkey paw is an understandable interpretation but it doesn't hold up if you think about it. And it's been outright confirmed he WAS after his soul anyways, both in future dialogue and by writers.
I just don’t get why people can’t just accept that it’s a red herring and move on.
Because most of them are Bangel shippers and they have a VERY big double standard lmao @@Girl4Music
@@Girl4Music
because it's not a very good red herring. it's too forced. it would have played better if they'd just given spike many fewer lines rather than so much unnatural dialog that hints at something viewers would have to think about to disprove. it's unnecessarily muddled.
@@sirmoonslosthismind if served its purpose didn’t it? We were shocked at the reveal that it was his soul he was fighting for.
Don't expect this lady to be honest lol. This isn't her first time watching through the series and she likes to ragebait ppl. Like when she crapped all over OMWF
I love the ending with all the past big bads.
It's just a shame they never used the other with the First and just used Buffy
No Spike always wanted to have his soul back, that is why he went to Africa, this has been discussed by literally every writer and confirmed.
"Spike's quest was, and ALWAYS WAS, to get his soul restored for Buffy, despite any misleading leaks we may have put out that you fell for."
- David Fury on the Bronze Beta, 11/19/02
"Spike looked into his soul at that moment [the attempted rape], and saw the demon in him, and that's what made him want to go get a soul .... We did a big ole mislead on you all, where we wanted you to think he gonna go get the chip out. We knew, the whole time, from the very beginning he was gonna go get a soul. And when he says I want Buffy to have what she deserves, he means a lover with a soul."
- Jane Espenson, Buffy writer
Radio interview on the Succubus Club, 5/22/02
Moderator: "At the end of the finale, I thought Spike wanted to get the chip out, not get his soul back?"
Joss Whedon: "Noooo.... but you were meant to think that. I personally devised something called a plot twist."
At the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences panel "Behind the Scenes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer," 6/18/02

Honestly, the final scene is the only thing that makes this episode. It otherwise serves the utilitarian purpose of checking in with the characters to see where they're at and setting the scene, but the zombie ghosts don't do anything for me at all. I think if they were actually characters we knew who Buffy didn't save, it might have had some kind of impact, but Buffy doesn't care and so neither do I.
Glory was the best big bad. It's at most between her and The Mayor. The rest don't come even close.
Yea the same. Honestly the Mayor was my favorite from the first 6 six seasons.
Angelus and Dark Willow are better than Glory and The Mayor to me.
Angel, Spike, and Dru were the best. Followed by The Mayor, Glory, Adam, and the First.
The First was the best big bad because it is the first evil
@@handeaykan8419 well they did a very poor job of showcasing why “the first evil” is so threatening and was the biggest bad of them all.
I love season 7
Same here.
Ditto.
I "inherited" a cat, now 14 years of age, from my daughter who pesters me (the cat, not my daughter) for her 4 o'clock feeding starting at around 1. No worries, I pet her and she purrs!
This is the episode that actually sets up the entire finale, but you will understand as we get there. And no, Spike actually "wanted" his soul. But again, that will be revealed.
Buffy giving Dawn the ability to fight one was exquisite!
The reveal of the new Sunny Dale High was wonderful!
Xander is a businessman? Well, we need new paths for our heros.
Williow is on the path to redemtion?
We have a potential new big bad in the school?
Dang it! This will be an interesting final season, and I hope you enjoy.
There is a book series called Wicked Willow (3 books) that is a "what if Willow was never stopped" that basically picked up around the time she says 1 down.
When I read this, I had much preferred to this that story arc play out on screen because DAMN! It was soooo good!
If Willow was never stopped she would have lost her humanity. No Willow anymore.
Buffy and cats! Two of my favorite things :)
Actually, confirmed by the writers, Spike DID go there intending to get his soul returned. We were just being led to believe it was to get the chip out. As Joss said "It's called a plot twist". Looking back it makes sense (despite the lines that make it seem otherwise) because he already could hurt Buffy, if that were his plan.
I do think it's interesting to see who believes Spike wanted his Soul and who thinks he wanted his Chip out, it's ambiguous but for me he took part in an ancient mystical trial, restoring a soul is more of a mystical task than removing a chip.
It's simple he didn't need the chip out to kill her he could hurt her that much was established after she was resurrected. So there is no other conclusion than he wanted a soul to give her what she deserves.
Plus it was kinda confirmed but every Buffy writer that he went for his soul
No one noticed, but Dawn, the girl and the boy next to her in the basement were technically representations of Buffy, Willow and Xander. They were like younger versions of the trio. I was so angry at the writer why he didn't use this similarity for the rest of the season.
Season 7 time! Let’s do this ❤
Things are about to get shiny.
I'm excited about this season. Other people hate this season I don't know why.
I think it's partly because the previous two seasons were so amazing, it's hard to top them. Season 7 is great, maybe not all episodes but the storyline is decent for a final season, in my opinion.
Personally I don’t like Season 7 because they wasted its potential. It’s poorly executed.
@@Girl4Music It's not my favorite season either, but I wouldn't say it's bad. It has its pros and cons, just like any other season of Buffy.
@@alexie5201 I suppose. More cons for me though. There’s some great episodes for sure but as a whole - yeah, definitely my least favourite.
I'm with the first guy, it's not bad but after the last 2 it feels like a bit of step down - would've liked to have seen more of Dawn's new friends than the group we get too...
Spike wanted his soul back. As for why he was always on about his chip, well, let me refer to a movie from quite a few years ago starring Jack Nicholson "As Good as it Gets". In the movie Nicholson's character's putative love interest asks him a question about what he thinks of her. He refers to a list of medications he has--clinical OCD and other mental health issues. He's been extremely conscientious about taking those medications because, in his words, "You make me want to be a better man."
That's Spike's relationship with Buffy ever since Season 5, started in Season 4, and maybe have bits going back as far a Becoming (thus why Drusila left him in the first place). It really got going, though, with the chip in his head. The chip, you see, forced him into fairly close association with the Scoobies and, particularly, with Buffy. His infatuation with Buffy motivated him to try to be "better". He didn't really understand what "better" consisted of, and the path was definitely twisted with many setbacks, but he was trying.
So, the chip in his head provided motivation for changes within Spike that led to him seeking to get his soul back because that's the only way he could become "what the Slayer deserves."
This is, admittedly, headcanon, but it makes sense and explains what we've actually seen in the show.
Of course, he had no idea just how his soul would torment him and how crazy it would make him.
Of course he wants to get his soul back 😌 William wants to give Buffy what she deserves 🤌🏻❤️
Bash is cute. 🥰 We’re an owner of a rescue cat as well.😼
Oooh I forgot that DB Woodside was in this, I'm so used to him from Lucifer that I forgot he was there
What's fascinating about this, is that (at least for me) it's easy to tell right away that the "coming of age" part of the series is over. This, in many ways, is like watching AtS S1 now.
I think this reaction to the ending scene, while more dialed back on suprise, is more unique than most.
After being re ensouled, I'm not sure what reaction we should've expected from Spike.
Couldn’t use Dark Willow for the Season 6 Big Bad. Had to use Warren.
Can’t tell you why.
Could’ve used Angelus instead of Druscilla for Season 2’s Big Bad but there’s this whole separate network restriction issue for Buffy and Angel.
I think it works though because this is about relating to Spike. His perspective. And everyone that appears had some sort of tie to him or caused trauma for him. It works for the tormenting.
What I like is how they only show Buffy at the very end of it because it’s about going “right back to the beginning”
What was there at the beginning? Buffy.
And Spikes soul won't go away if he gets happy. So he is still better than Angel.
How does that make him better? The circumstances are completely different.
@@MrSupertallblackmanBiggest difference apart from the "No loophole" thing is that Angelus is a complete monster that wants to torture Buffy in every possible way, while soulless Spike is in love with Buffy and intentionally got his soul back for her, which is quite extraordinary. While both of them are not the one in control of the body, they are in still in the background, whispering. Plus, while they were alive, Liam was an asshole, while William was a sweet guy.
@@christophtoifl6848Again you're talking about 2 completely different people from 2 completely different time periods under completely different circumstances. There are reasons why Liam was the way he was compared to William it's not really a fitting comparison in the least. Angel and Spike have a lot in common but this comparison of who's the better person makes no sense when fans bring it up. It's apples to oranges.
creepy comment. end of the day he still tried to rape buffy and therefore makes him no better than angel.
Willow was the only one that was a match for her? The Master and Glory both won and killed Buffy. Even Adam required a spell that combined all of the Scoobies to beat him.
Nah Buffy beat the crap out of Glory and Giles killed Ben/her. Buffy made a sacrifice to save Dawn.
edit: Buffy has always had her friends to help her either way. That is why she lived so long as a slayer.
@@minuette1752yeah and the master died like 10min after killing buffy so i dont get where hes supposed to have won
Glory didn't kill buffy. Buffy killed herself. Biffy actually beat glory but couldn't kill Ben because he's human. She won against glory.
@@grrrrbabyverygrrr8165 Glory was the first Big Bad that Buffy accepted she couldn't defeat. I like dark willow but she would need to steal a lot of magic to defeat Glory
@okiguess8103 she literally beat glory into submission with a hammer to the face what show were you watching? 🤣
Re Spike's soul; ik it's been said that he was always going for his soul, in my own headcanon it's what he wanted but didn't realise it was what he wanted earlier on, hence the more violent language at the end of ep19/ in ep20.
Quote as much "the writers said..." as you want, that's just how I like to think about it.
Really looking forward to reliving this season with you.
2:03 "I want to see, how it ends" 😏
Buckle up buttercup the final season is Epic!
Buffy has mom hair😅
Spikec❤❤❤
Love this season
I love Halfrek!
Not just all the villains, they took the form of Buffy as well...
Well, technically, slayers are infused with the essence of a demon.
Lots of folks say depression/grief/loss etc was the real big bad consistently through season 6.
omg hi Bash 🥺
Omg ,i love black cats 🐈⬛ so so cute
Mine is black and i named him Ozzy ❤
Yeah. We all love Lucifer❤
Buffy First ❤❤❤❤
Spike wanted a soul.
He didnt need his chip out to kill her he could have killed her all season 6. He wanted a soul and if thats not convincing enough ask joss Whedon
After all these years and when it was already confirmed people are still questioning this situation. Unbelievable 😵💫🫠😂🥱
Always hated spike getting his soul just magically forgiving what he tried to do to Buffy, it’s so icky, I’ll never like spike because of that
❤❤❤
Don't expect this lady to be honest lol. This isn't her first time watching through the series and she likes to ragebait ppl. Like when she crapped all over OMWF
You and thinking that’s another slayer. It’s only faith lol. In order for another slayer to come faith would need to die.
Vash the Stampede!!
12:50 no, girl, only one was hot. The one who you denied you were dating with. But now when no one hears you except these freaks you say that 😎
Angel was hot. Spike always looked too old for Buffy and especially with the curly hair in this episode. 🤢Buffy deserved a hot young guy.
@@jevonk taste differ but with all due respect you can take that Shrek if you want him. He won't be missed by me.
I would say that only years after we saw Spike he started to look like he is older than her. But anyway one thing is always right about men. They absolutely don't need to look like a young boy to be hot. Lot of young boys are not hot at all. Only their male energy matters. And what he can show and give you. And these things they learn over time.
Spike is not my type of a man but his appearance just blows me away. I see this energy in everything that he does. Such things are absolutely not about age. They are more than that. He is able to attract lot of women with different tastes. Because with him your taste doesn't matter. He matters.
The whole "Make me what I was" was intentionally filmed very misleading, a bit too much so in my opinion. At that time, even James Masters didn't know what Spikes real goal was, if he knew, I think he would have acted a bit differently ...
@@christophtoifl6848that's for the other person
I can’t believe you didn’t like Glory. I think she was one of the best haha.
But yes Adam sucked and Willow was another great villain.
Maybe you don't remember cause it was Just one episode I think, but we already know this villain, I won't say in which season we saw it
I lost all respect for Spike after he tried to rape Buffy. Ill never understand Spuffy fans for that reason.
I think Lessons was an excellent opener with the opening scene in Istanbul with the girl being chased by the shrouded men ( who we have seen before in S3 ) a great little 'taster' of what is to come in the Season. We the see Buffy training Dawn, who says 'I'm now taller than you' we can see how Dawn has grown. Then as we are coming full circle Principal Wood cuts the ribbon to open Sunnydale High. Funny when Buffy says 'do I have mum hair' when Wood thinks she is Dawn's mother. We get our first scene of Supernatural happenings with Buffy in the bathroom. Very funny when Dawn says she was into 'Britney Spears early work, before she sold out'. The we have Buffy as the 'embarrassing mum' ruining Dawns intro to the class. The pencil scene is great when the student asks for it Dawn them seemingly stabs her in the eye with it, a throwback to Nightmares episode in S1. As Buffy is fighting the manifest spirits, we suddenly see a very strange looking Spike behind the door. Buffy sees his injuries, we know something has changed. Xander eventually breaks The Talisman, again funny scene when the student says 'you are the coolest mum ever'. When Principal Wood offers Buffy the job of Counsellor, of course she accepts, now call me cynical but surely you would have to have training, qualifications, credentials and experience to get such a post, but hey this is Sunnydale High after all. One of the greatest scenes in the whole Buffyverse at the end with Spike being tormented by Warren, Glory, Adam, The Mayor, Drusilla, and The Master, and good perception here to link this back to Angel in Amends episode from S3, what have they all got in common, and of course Buffy too. That was a pivotal episode back in S3 linking all this together. Brilliant writing. Great reaction again can see that you are enthralled and intrigued by this brilliant opener for S7.
Above contains a SPOILER
Seriously? Delete this :/ I know you think it isn't a spoiler because you can totally recognize them if you've watched the show a dozen times, but come on. I don't understand why people just can't resist talking about things coming in the future.
