I took an early spring canoe trip down a local river.
The day was going great, I ran some rapids and felt good.
I made a huge mistake and sunk my canoe in the freezing cold rapids, it started to blizzard, I had to make camp and camped under a tarp after falling in the cold spring water.

There is a huge amount of viewers that want to see "solo only" videos. They are anti-social people. Some go as far as disliking when the content creator talks. They are more satisfied by the solitude.
@@bbranett2188 Solo adventures are simply a different kind of experience. For those who do them as well as for those who watch. Your anti social people thesis is built on a logical fallacy. Just because one likes watching A better, does not necessarily mean, he in general is anti B. That obviously is a quite stupid conlusion.
It’s not about being anti-social. There’s something very satisfying about feeling completely isolated from other people and completely surrounded by wilderness. It feels like living just for the sake of living, in a very primal way. That’s not anti-social, it’s having time out, relaxing, and destressing.
You have to respect the devotion to the craft of this man. Falls in a river in below 0 and still takes the time to keep filming everything, including B-roll. And owns his mistake and realizes a second paddle is probably a good call. You're a good man, Joe.
he also didn't play up the drama at all. In the intro clip he let's us know he's fine.

If he was doing some reality tv BS he would have cranked up the drama and left people wanting to find out what happened. There's a youtuber pilot that crashed his plane on purpose for likes and is now getting investigated by the FAA--joe doesn't strike me as that type of person. If Joe plays up some situations a little from time to time for the sake of his business, he does it very mildly
Joe, as someone that has been kayak fishing the Chesapeake Bay (US, VA side), it's rivers, & estuaries for 8+ years. I highly recommend an extra paddle. In addition I would recommend leashing your paddle to your canoe. I've flipped my kayak before and having stuff leashed was the only reason I didn't loose it.
Totally agree! I have been thinking this for years while watching him. I also paddle solo, and always leash my paddle and have a spare. I sadly expected this to happen to him eventually 😒
I'm not sure I would not recommend a paddle leash in a small river with strong currents, especially one with rapids. It can easily get tangled in trees limbs or other debris and be a hazard. You can easily get tangled in it and that's when things get worse. Now on lakes or large bodies of water, I think a leash is ok. This is just my opinion though. Completely agree with the 2nd paddle.
I went back and read what you wrote, and thought about it for a few. As long as the leash is short with no slack in it and where the paddle is tight against the canoe, this would be fine. I'm guessing that is what you meant. I've seen people have the leash attached to the paddle they are using and it's never a good idea.
I'm glad it was tight enough that you didn't loose it.
I do a lot of kayak fishing, and the bungee style paddle tethers are super unobtrusive, and just nice to be able to lay your paddle right in the water sometimes.
If you leash your paddle make sure you have a knife within reach in case you get wrapped up in the leash.
Great lessons for all of us! Know your limits, keep a dry bag, spare paddle ATTACHED to the boat, a Garmin In-Reach or similar, (and hurray for your life jacket!!!!!) and someone who knows where you are and can bail your cold ass out! Keep at 'em Joe!
God I love joe. This is the most wholesome Canadian thing I’ve seen in awhile. Man tanks it in the river and doesn’t want his wife driving in the snow and sticks it out.
It was really sweet to see your young daughter. I remember when I first saw your videos the 10 days 10 items in the wilderness videos and you were just coming up with her name. Time moves pretty fast, glad to see you were ok. To bad it took the wind out of your sails for the rest of your trip, but the next one will be great.

om goodness, you had quite the experience! Seems like you did everything the best you could do, you had cold weather with a high tide with high rapids, possible flooding in some areas, a pilot always watches where to land in those situations, and the best part was you had a sat phone and used it to show how a sat phone works.. that's when you're supposed to use it. Bravo!

Spooky stuff, i remember me and a friend walking through snow on a mountain hike getting colder and colder, he kept saying he was fine and then on a ridge started blabbering jibberish, we ended up getting the tent up and were both ok by morning. I was hypothemeric aswell, was a bit like being drunk.

I always remember a Ray Mears quote, "never go out on a canoe trip without a spare paddle or the ability to carve one, or both..."

So glad you’re okay and you showed as much as you could of what happened, to help others learn. I have a telescopic paddle from Canadian Tire that I picked up a few years ago for $20. It’s always lashed under my seat and I forget it’s there half the time, but great in case I loose or break my double blade, as I do mostly solo trips. It weighs a lb and opens up to 3 feet from 21”. Thanks for sharing this so people can see that anyone, even someone experienced, can end up in the water. More people need to share stuff like this so others can learn from it. Cheers !
Hell of a trip Joe! I feel like these transitional periods between Winter/Spring can sometimes be the most dangerous, especially on the water. Not the trip you had planned but good learning experience and it’s always nice to have a family rescue! Haha kids, loved the “oh, your hands are freezing.” Glad you’re ok!

Mate if he seriously in trouble you wouldn't be watching a clip. That's a fact filming wouldn't be your priority. So this was completely in the normal day. Cold water for 2 mins no issues. Just get changed. Not life threatening in this clip.
@@reallyskeptical I mean, he only started filming after he was relatively safe again (but he was still in shock), but that could go very wrong if he lost his backpack. People dont need to die to make a situation life threatening.

Wow. Bush buddy for the win! I shudder to think what would have happened to a less experienced person. This was good for the weekend warriors to see. There might be a few less rescues this year because of you. I salute you for not covering up. That is the mark of a true professional, in any field.
Experienced? Most weekend worriers have enough sense to have a extra paddle, and to lash them to thier canoes or kayak. I wouldn't call this experience, I call this over confidence.
If you or anyone else needs one, I would suggest the titanium Fire Ant. Same idea and it is flat. Plus it weighs only a few ounces. Can't be beat.

I love your wilderness videos,I’m in MINNESOTA north country with bears , wolves . Always wondered why you don’t have a gun , stay safe
From my personal experience most people in his area don't carry guns unless hunting, very few documented cases of any animal killing humans in that area so guns are seen by most as just for hunting when in the woods, attitudes may be different in your area.
Lol your funny it's Canada you are just able to go outside. Now with out the covid police coming for you more less a gun.
Yes, anything can happen, any time. Black Bears, while rare, have attacked/killed people in Ontario, esp. if they just get out of Hibernation. Wolves, coyotes, Cougars even, have & can attack. Moose too! & those little Fishers are vicious! ;) Wilderness Carry in parts of Canada, can be tricky, as a C.O can be a doushe, & nail you for 'pouching'. When he's in Algonquin, you are not allowed to bring a firearm.(National Park) Bear Bangers or some via a flare gun launcher & Bear spray at minimum. Better to have even these, & not need them. Wild animals, are unpredictable. Better safe than sorry. If in BC or a place with Brown / Grizzly Bear, or where Cougars have been spotted, I would 100% Wilderness carry. We can legally have short barreled shotguns in Canada (8.5" barrels, w/26"+ OAL) & they are Non-restricted..meaning you can carry with you where allowable. Handguns are a No no here for Bush or any other carry, except at the Range. or you can carry an Antique handgun, same as a non-restricted firearm..but you can't conceal it. LOL..Welcome to Canada..a land w/severally f**ked up gun laws! Cheers!

Oh man, this is a heartbreaker. I'm so so sorry Joe, for you & your family. You have absolutely no reason to feel bad. You gave Tripper the best life he could ever have had anywhere. You didn't decide to have him brought into the world from a genetically poor background. You had all his ailments treated to give him a better quality of life. He got to run around to his heart's desire in the woods, play with sticks, play in the snow & lakes & best of all, to live with the most wonderful family that was full of love & laughter. You found him for a reason, whoever he had lived with, he'd still have had the same health problems, but with the Robinet family he had the best life he could have ever had. You did nothing wrong. He lived with the best family he ever could have done & there is nothing more you could have done. I feel your pain & heart ache & it's so brave of you to have made this video. Buddy this happened to me recently! Solo on an "easy" river, in winter here in the UK. Also lost my water filter. But lost my phone too when I capsized. Still was one of my best ever adventures. These are the ones we never forget, and more importantly, the ones that humble us. Love you bro!
Holy crap mang! I'm glad you're okay. I've been in a similar situation a few years ago, so I completely understand the processing every detail afterwards... you'll replay it in your mind for weeks. You should always tether your paddle to the boat and have a half paddle mounted to the hull (in case your primary paddle breaks or gets lost) when your traveling through remote areas.

Holy cow Joe thank God you're okay! Pretty scary seeing that little clip when you first came out before you changed your clothes. If you had lost your dry bag you would have been in a bad situation. The stuff you lost can be replaced but not you! Many lessons learned I'm sure. Maybe a good thing that this happened, so you'll be even better prepared in case God forbid it ever happens again, and a great story to share during your upcoming training!
Thank you for showing us the real life side of canoeing and accident that can happen. You keep it up there Joe you're doing the right thing by heading home instead of asking for a paddle I think that alone was the best decision you've made to not continue to go home enjoy your rest.

I feel you on the spring thing... All the snow was melted and the grass was getting green again... Then BAM! 48 inches of snow in 4 days last week.

I almost drowned whitewater kayaking. My leg got pinned between rocks underneath after I got dumped. My first time ever doing it, and it was with guides, in a group. Even then it was really dangerous. Never doing that again! Can’t imagine doing it in ice and snow, by myself, in the middle of nowhere!

I watched this a second time after your coma video. I can’t believe you didn’t bring a spare paddle. Also this was the perfect opportunity for you to build a paddle and finish your trip. That’s what the old Joe would have done. Quit giving up so easy. Hope you are recovering.
Dang that sucks, but the key is you didn't panic. You took control of your situation and took the measures to fix the situation. I'd call that a win.
