What does practice mean to Dave Weckl?

  • We recently held a clinic with one of the greatest drummers of all time and we had the privilege to chat to Dave a few moments before it all went down.
If you have the opportunity to go to a Dave Weckl clinic, we cannot recommend it highly enough.
Not only did Dave blow the roof off with his playing and share such rich insight that very few musicians have but he was warm, witty and above all, a true professional.
Dave was contracted to do a shorter, 90 minute clinic and he ended up staying a whole hour longer to answer everyone's question, took a ton of photos, shook everyone's hand after the clinic was done and then shared a beer with some of the participants. A true class act.
Thank you Dave for your kindness and a massive thank you goes out to Yamaha for bringing this clinic together and financially supporting the event so we were able to pack out the room and sell tickets for just €10.
Sometimes it can be hard to give this kind of access to musicians of all backgrounds, without the artist underselling their services or for us as a business having to take a huge financial hit.
We really try to do our best but support like this helps us bring drumming education to people who might not be able to afford expensive masterclasses and it really helps keep our industry alive.
We are so proud to work with such great people at Yamaha, Noisy Rooms and the House of Music. Thank you all!

He also spent almost an extra hour at his masterclass the next day just to make sure everyone got the attention he felt we needed.
This man cares about the music. Simply amazing!

I understood it as there is at first a serious chunk of time spent on muscle building, coordination, using stick, pedals etc making them feel part of your body. And there he said spent “as much time as possible”, which is probably then 2-3h per when you’re young due to stamina, and 2-3h per day when you’re older due to other commitments. And as those things shape up, play with others. I spent about 2,000 hours on own practise, then I kept the practise up but also joined bands, and it’s definitely a totally different learning experience. For example, hi hat accents to fit with the singers performance, I had no idea that was a thing at first.

It's easy to him to say these words when he knows everything? What about us, mortals???
