I'm switching to LED's in my 1970 chevelle, and I think it will be the same process as yours. Do you think no load flashers or heavy duty ones would do the trick?

I did a kit a while ago on a 69 Camaro and needed to add a no-load LED flasher into the mix. I can't find the original forum, but the below article is probably the most important part of the install. Grabbed from a MotorTrend article.
"Typically, they plug right in, but they do have specific indexing and polarity. This means one terminal has voltage always coming in (typically marked with a B or X) while the other terminal has the voltage going out to the lights (typically marked with an L). Some LED flashers will have a wire that gets grounded to the car. You can check which is which by using a multimeter on each plug terminal. The terminal that has constant 12-volt, or that lights the test light, should go to the B or X marked terminal on the flasher."

I think your blinker fluid was just low. Next time check that first.
