The beta test was a lot of fun. Made a great memory after trying the whole time then getting a 1st in bowling right at the end. Excited for this one as a casual social game to bring out at gatherings.
I wish it would've brought back Baseball. I feel like the new motion controls would be amazing for throwing Curveballs, Splitters, Knuckleballs, etc. Also, where's GOLF?!?! Golf was so much fun to waste time back when the game first came out! And no BOXING?!?! Also a terrible shame. And if Matt isn't a playable character this time around, or wreaking havoc, then I DEFINITELY don't want it.
I know golf is being added as a free(?) update down the line. which kinda sucks but whatever. You CAN play as a Mii, so yes matt is technically playable, no idea about boxing or baseball tho. I want those back too
They better add baseball. You would think it would be so easy. And hitting a home run has a lot of appeal. Boxing I think is less important because chambara does a good job of similar hits and counters but nothing is even close to hitting a homer.
Maybe it will come later I don't care if it comes later, since it comes April, and say those games come in December, I would be fine, because it does exist
I think part of the original appeal of Wii Sports was that motion control was an entirely new thing and nobody understood how it worked at first, like the casual audience I mostly mean, so everybody would try to play Wii Sports like the real damn sport and that’s what made it such a phenomenon, everybody just got so into it like they were playing real tennis. Now everybody knows better so it’s not quite the same.
Am excited by this, but disappointed in the choice of games. Half of the games are the same setup, hit something over a net. Surely they could have chosen more different events, albeit with good coming later.
Personally I really enjoyed the highly responsive feeling motion controls of Switch Sports' Tennis from the online playtest. Meanwhile I really disliked the feel of Mario Tennis Aces' "Swing Mode," which I thought felt very sluggish, laggy, and unintuitive by comparison (and I played it a lot, hoping it would grow on me). In Mario Tennis Swing Mode the ball moves very slowly through the court, and it doesn't even create the illusion of rally momentum and physics affecting the ball's movement: instead the physics noticeably reset every time either player hits the ball. So even though you can execute different shot types, the core game feel is so poor for the most part that I don't even value the added mechanics and strategy it offers. I feel the opposite to Alex on this one: I wish Mario Tennis Swing Mode felt more like Wii Tennis. In contrast, the original Wii Tennis feels highly responsive and intuitive, albeit simpler from a game design standpoint. I play real tennis a lot too, and I'll take the fast and satisfying feel of Wii/Switch Sports Tennis any day over Mario Tennis Swing Mode. I should also note that the "spins" in Mario Tennis Swing Mode behave absolutely nothing like in real tennis, whereas the topspin and slice that occur more spontaneously in Wii Tennis are actually a good video game approximation of what those spins feel like in a real tennis rally. Also, the recent Switch Sports overview trailer suggested that you can in fact control hitting with topspin, slice, or throwing up a lob. So I hope that nuance is present in the final game, but either way I loved the feel from the three matches I played in the online playtest, so I'm excited either way.
I loved the OG Wii Sports but this feels like the type of game that I'll buy and then never get around to playing. 😂 Probably just wait for a sale in the future before getting this.
I'm really happy they are keeping this series alive! I do appreciate you highlighting some of the flaws with volleyball and how uninvolved it feels. I always imagined Nintendo making these kinds of games for VR since it just feels so much more intuitive. The motion controls are a lot more precise as well. I'm really glad there are more of these exercising games. It is nice to have different ways of playing video games.
I’m hyped for this game idk why but all the actions just satisfied me so much on my friends wii systems. So glad to now have my own switch sports to play this constantly
I remember reading a tip on one of the loading screens for the online test that you can do lobs and stuff in tennis based on how you hold the controller during your swing.
I'm actually going to buy this BECAUSE of what you said about Volley Ball. My partner is new to gaming and is absolutely awful at most games. I feel the simplicity might help her to get involved so that she can move on to more complex games in general.
Meh, all of these sports aren’t going to be complex anyway. It’s just a badly designed sport Especially because there are only 6 sports and 1 of them being bad already narrows it down so much
Bowling and Chambara still working well were my main hopes. If they can land golf (and maybe add archery later), I'll be sorted in Nintendo Sports terms.
I tried the online test back in February, and it was fine. It didn’t make me excited for this, but I didn’t think it was terrible either. I had to consult the manual for Wii Sports Resort. That game had Swordplay, Wakeboarding, Archery, Frisbee, Basketball, Power Cruising, Cycling, Golf, Table Tennis, Bowling, Canoeing, and Air Sports. I know Nintendo has said golf is coming later. Maybe some of the other sports will come as well. Personally, I rather do some of these things for real.
Archery from resort and baseball from wii sports stood out to me as good times. I wish this game had at least those 2. Frisbee deserves an honorable mention as that would be fun too.
Super stoked for this game! I probably won't play Volleyball & Badminton much, as my mom & I have played mostly Tennis & Bowling in the previous Wii Sports games for our daily evening routine before dinner. I hope the lag & skipping is better online for Tennis as there was quite a bit of it in Wii Sports Club. I'm hoping Baseball will eventually be added an a future update! I'm very relieved that the Mii's are still playable!
Volleyball is like Basketball on Resort. Also, people sleep on the mini game were you can explore Maka Wuhu on Wii Fit U, the closest to a real exploration of the island in foot.
Really disappointed!! My family still to this day enjoy playing Wii Sports and Resort and Family gatherings, particularly Golf, Bowling and Archery. So here’s a solid fact. 13 years and 2 console generations later, we get a pretty half assed Switch Sports which launches with barebones content. Badminton and Vollyball appear to have the same minimal gameplay inputs, soccer looked dull and Tennis & bowling are identical to the 2006 release. Where is Golf? Why are we paying full price for a game only to have to download its content at a later date? Where is archery? Where are the revolutionary new ideas? Switch sports should be so much bigger and better! It should have 10 sports minimum and offer 13 years worth of improvement!!
My thoughts exactly! This games shows very minimal improvement over wii sports/resort in the quality of the sports that it does offer, and is an objective downgrade from Resort in terms of content. Adding golf later down the line is not an "update" in the same vain that Pokemon Legends Arceus recent free update was (adding a small amount of content as a bonus to a complete package given to the player at launch), it's giving you a major part of the game that should have been there from the start.
Y'all are some solid fans. I'm serious, it's good to recognize what should be done to keep older players coming back for new stuff and to wow new players.
Adding obstacles to football free kick can make it fun. For volleyball if they added tricks like fake setting to dump or just toss it over the net could make it better.... And maybe add 6 by 6 where blocking makes sense. I always knew the racket sports would feel the most natural, Id probably wear weights cause joycons feel so light. Tennis needs to add other moves and maybe badminton could add a few. I just hate not being able to decide where to move. Gonna wait for a good free update before I buy the game.
I have to say I really liked how volleyball was structured, given you are playing with another physical person right next to you. It felt really skill based, having to perfectly time movements and predict what and where the other team is going to hit.
I think a lot of your experience translates to familiarity in the controls. Volleyball and football both don't translate as well into a one-controller-controll as badminton or bowling do. Using one controller to control one hand of the character is much more intuitive than controlling the jump and hitting during volleyball. Tennis seems fine in this regard but seems like a personal preference. I can imagine golf being a decent addition aswell, as the controller translates very well into the original movement of swinging the club. Adding too many additional controls, like running in football, take away from the feeling of having the controller as an extension of your body. This also explains why the penalty mode might feel more responsive and better balanced than the football part itself.
Seems like a pretty fair preview. Oddly enough, I remember the first Wii Sports, and back then, the only game we kept coming back to was Bowling. Sure, we played the original mostly for one game, but it was an incredible one. I also remember Tennis not having much staying power, but oddly enough, the Tennis I played in the Sever test was actually a marked improvement over the original Tennis, particularly when playing doubles. Not a game changer, but definitely improved. I had more fun playing doubles than the original Wii Sports version, but again, I can’t say it would have that much more staying power. However, my experience with Bowling and Chambara definitely showed that they still improved well on the formula established by the previous iteration. I definitely look forward to Badminton after this review. The Shootout, with the leg strap, sounds like a good addition to my Ring Fit/Fitness Boxing routine, where you’re doing an exercise but with a game attached to it using timing and accuracy. Mostly because it would make me do leg motions which the other two don’t do with the added benefit of a game attached. Seems like this will be a game where even though having less sports than Wii Sports Resort at launch, will engage me with nearly as many game types as Resort did. As Wii sports, to me, Is often a franchise where I only really play a portion of games it has, but the ones I stick with are of incredible quality. I still hope that, in the future, they continue to add a game,or two after golf. I would like them to bring the rowing games back, and maybe the archery.
I don't see many people talking about this sport, but I would really love for Basketball from Resort to make a return to this game! That, Baseball, and Boxing would make it a perfect!
Almost for sure; that is the whole idea of Nintendo switch (unless you have a switch lite). If you watch in the official ads you can see at the very VERY end of the video two switches, one OLED and one normal. If you notice when the OLED comes out of the dock right at the end, the game appears on its screen. Obviously however this is not playable on Switch Lite, but possibly if you have extra joycons
@@Cyberbrickmaster1986 ohhh sorry lol I misinterpreted. I doubt it will be playable in hand held mode; if you played the play test you would have noticed the first thing that happens is that they make you detach a joycon.
I would bet there will be an expansion to this soon. Baseball and home run derby are essential to this. looks like with the initial release I'll be spending a lot of time bowling.

The first Wii Sports had five Games and every Game felt completely different. And in Comparison to Wii Sports Resort this new Game really feel a bit lackluster. Feels sad to write this. Maybe we get more Updates in the Future (at least Golf is already confirmed).

I’m a little fatigued by the amount of party/mini game collections on the Switch at the moment, perhaps we’re not out of our anti socialising world at the moment. Plus we’ve had Mario Golf and Tennis recently that have taken the place of Wii Sports, even if they were a bit thin themselves.
The big question is how are the controls/drift issues? Playing through Skyward Sword HD, you have to reset the right joy-con CONSTANTLY because it drifts every 30 seconds.
I think you would like tennis much better when you play with 3 other people. I enjoyed the play test. I was sore for days afterwards, so now I'm exercising to prepare to be able to play the full game without being in pain.
fellow left here! I played the online test and once clicked what sport you want to play when you’re about to load into the game it ask you if you want to your left hand, right hand or both.
I feel like it’s a bit disingenuous to compare Switch Sports tennis to Mario Tennis. Switch Sports is a $40 game where 1/6th of it is tennis where Mario Tennis is a $60 game only about tennis.
I'm very excited. I always had to play Wii Sports at my brother's house and since then it's been my dream to have a similar game on a console of my own which is now possible on my Switch.
As someone who plays volleyball I can say I very much disagree with your points. The game is much more in depth than you like to think, with things like blocking, receive positioning and spike direction. I believe there’s a level of ignorance to justify your dislike for this mode as me and my friends have so much more fun when we treat it like a proper game of volleyball.
I wonder if you will need an online subscription to purchase the dlc? & giving me badminton & tennis is like giving me boxing & shadow boxing as 2 seperate games
Tennis Badminton Volleyball 3 similar games. Damn shame. I wish they would’ve put table tennis in like “Wii Sports: Resort”. It’s different enough in that you use your hand and wrist more than your whole arm. That would get intense in WS:R.
I really hope they do proper DLC at some point by adding a lot more sports and mini games like in Wii Sports. I'll wait on this until the fall when golf is added. It is a plus this is $40 rather than $60.
I do feel like with tennis they should at least give you left and right movement control with automatic vertical placement that way if you predict a shit wrong you won’t be able to get there in time
Although this isn't a full price game, I think they're cutting us short not bringing back more of the game modes from the old Wii Sports/Resort - at least bring back all the original sports from the original game (boxing and baseball), would have been nice to seem them attempt to make a more fleshed out basketball game too, 3v3 was ok in WSR but it was defo lacking in not having the whole court - plus given how WS/WSR were almost tests for motion controls, I feel like now that's nothing new they would give us more freedom in things such as tennis where we can freely move about the court

I have to say I really liked how volleyball was structured, given you are playing with another physical person right next to you. It felt really skill based, having to perfectly time movements and predict what and where the other team is going to hit.
TABLES TENNIS! We want ping pong back. That’s the best game mode in all wii sports
Thats sad, volleyball irl is so fun
But thanks for the video, I might get this in the future or Mario tennis aces
Love your vidoes. Good review!
Table tennis needs to be back that’s the best greatest mini game ever
This game comes out the day after my birthday and I’m so excited!!!
There's just one question I have with the game right now: Is it playable in handheld mode?
Almost for sure; that is the whole idea of Nintendo switch (unless you have a switch lite). If you watch in the official ads you can see at the very VERY end of the video two switches, one OLED and one normal. If you notice when the OLED comes out of the dock right at the end, the game appears on its screen. Obviously however this is not playable on Switch Lite, but possibly if you have extra joycons
@@CPrime-sl9dj So you mean, it's playable in tabletop and not handheld?
@@Cyberbrickmaster1986 ohhh sorry lol I misinterpreted. I doubt it will be playable in hand held mode; if you played the play test you would have noticed the first thing that happens is that they make you detach a joycon.
All of the Sportsmates' faces have been replaced by Matt on the TV in the background 😏
Can we just take a minute on how amazing THAT BACKGROUND IS 😍
I would bet there will be an expansion to this soon. Baseball and home run derby are essential to this. looks like with the initial release I'll be spending a lot of time bowling.
just need them to add baseball and golf later in an update. hopefully
Golf will be added in an update this fall. I really hope baseball will be eventually added as well!
@@DisneyMusicVideos I really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really really dislike the update aproach, its so sad, i want the complete game on the cart.
Just noticed the background on Alex's monitor hahahaha
I'm down to get this game. I know golf is coming, but kind of hoping they give us boxing too
So, why did they replace the miis?
I miss the variety :/
Even if they are play different... Tennis, Badminton and Volleyball are just a field, where you have to get a "ball" or something like that to the other side. The first Wii Sports had five Games and every Game felt completely different.
And in Comparison to Wii Sports Resort this new Game really feel a bit lackluster. Feels sad to write this.
Maybe we get more Updates in the Future (at least Golf is already confirmed).
GOd thing updates can fix any issues with the game
Did it look and run smoothly compared to other switch games considering it has FSR?
seems promising but im hoping they add more sports. we just got spoiled for choice with sports resort. biking, the plane stuff, all the water sports. all that. hoping its not going to be a small thing.
The volleyball gives me memories of PSMove Sports Champions volleyball. If it's similar to that, I'll probably enjoy it. I'm very excited for Switch Sports overall. And hoping for new golf courses, maybe even a golf course creator (unlikely, but I can hope)
That’s just you. It’s fine for me. Recalibrate your joy con.
I played the online test, and only had to recalibrate at the beginning of the chambara matches.
That monitor wallpaper is legendary.
Does the game have 100 pins bowling?
Sounds like the motion controls are more accurate in this game
We NEED basketball on the Nintendo Wii. That'll draw in a lot of fans and will just give the perfect touch to the sequel!
Alex: "I don't know how much longevity Chambara can have"
Me, looking at my 100+ hours on Wii Sports Resort: 👀
The logo for the Spocco Square bowling alley reminds me so much of the Squarespace logo!
Why in chambira were you only holding the "sword" with one hand while your opponent was holding it with 2 hands?
This looks super fun! Everything negative he saying, actually looked entertaining for me. Excited this is coming to the Switch!
I think you would like tennis much better when you play with 3 other people. I enjoyed the play test. I was sore for days afterwards, so now I'm exercising to prepare to be able to play the full game without being in pain.
I wish there was cycling it was my all time favorite 😩 the other one I would love is boxing
For final review, can you mention if there's a left handed mode for all sports
It's called Sword Play in Wii Sports Resort
fellow left here! I played the online test and once clicked what sport you want to play when you’re about to load into the game it ask you if you want to your left hand, right hand or both.
Frisbee golf and basketball need to be back
I really hate that they excluded Boxing and Baseball. Those were the best.
This is exactly the review I was looking for . Thanks!
I could NOT get bowling to work in the online play test and was a bit frustrating.
I feel like it’s a bit disingenuous to compare Switch Sports tennis to Mario Tennis. Switch Sports is a $40 game where 1/6th of it is tennis where Mario Tennis is a $60 game only about tennis.
Good point
The Mario tennis game even outside of swing mode has a lot of depth. It's not a casual game imo compared to switch sports.
In overview trailer you can do lob in tennis.
I'm just pleased to finally have a Nintendo Sports game on on switch.
I wonder if you will need an online subscription to purchase the dlc? & giving me badminton & tennis is like giving me boxing & shadow boxing as 2 seperate games
They should have stuck with the original lineup - bowling, tennis, golf, boxing, baseball. This seems a bit disappointing
Me, a Midwestern US citizen who barely pronounces N’s and t’s in words hearing Badminton properly pronounced: 👁👄👁
Hopefully they get the golf right ⛳😎👌👍
You can do lobs, backspins, and topspins in tennis. It’s in the overview trailer- ;A;
Tennis
Badminton
Volleyball
3 similar games. Damn shame. I wish they would’ve put table tennis in like “Wii Sports: Resort”. It’s different enough in that you use your hand and wrist more than your whole arm. That would get intense in WS:R.
I wish they are going to add more sports(such as Boxing,Golf)and fix Volleyball & Football...!
I really hope they do proper DLC at some point by adding a lot more sports and mini games like in Wii Sports. I'll wait on this until the fall when golf is added. It is a plus this is $40 rather than $60.
This isn't worth $40 even. There are much meatier games that cost less than $40.
I thought they'll have the red joycon on the tv to use the camera for z-detection. :(
Is the volleyball fun?
Where are the Mii's?
