This kind of analysis is what sets your training apart. What a treat for us viewers to see replays of Jersey's behaviors. Instead of seeing a "mean" dog, we see a confused and anxious animal who has been mishandled by people many times and now lacks trust. Love this video. I had a dog like this, best dog I ever owned. He passed at 14 yrs old. He wasn't bad, he had been hurt a lot, and he just wanted to be left alone, except by me. And he didn't have to be around anyone else. I loved him so much.

Way to really differentiate the fearful and aggressive bark. I for one have a hard time reading into behaviors but that break down was great. Thank you.
The owner says “she’s a completely different dog”... but you know she’s a completely different owner too! Great work everyone and another 🎉🎉🎉 successful rehabilitation 👏🏼👍🐶🌼
It’s great that she hasn’t given up on him and now has the tools to work on him and get them to a more comfortable and confident life together. Another awesome job by you and your crew!
@@tomdavisofficial I found it really informative and it was helpful for understanding reactivity vs aggression. It would also be great to see dog-dog body language breakdowns!
It's always amazing to me to see the change in the owners from start to finish, they always look like the weight of the world has been lifted from their shoulders
I'm so sympathetic to this owner's situation, and so encouraged to see Tom's answer. A year ago I adopted a German Shepherd/border collie mix who's behavior was much the same, compounded by his practice of nipping to "herd" people away from me. I've had dogs all my life, but this one has been the biggest challenge. We're trying to work our way through it.
I love to see these videos, I love to see the dogs change their way of thinking and bonding with their owners - but most of all I love to see, how much better and relieved the owners turn out in the end. You can see their bodylanguage has changed, their way of talking and their gesture is different and they feel more confident. It is beautiful. And it teaches so much more than just handling dogs.
I think this is my dog too. He’s a spicy mix of min pin, chihuahua, and pomeranian which is why many have told me is a bad dog mix and the reason for his reactivity and aggressiveness. You’re videos give me hope!
I watch Tom’s videos and just when I think, Ah ha, I’ve got it! I watch one like this and realize I have SO much to learn! This is a GREAT video explaining fear based aggressiveness showing the head up, the softer bark and attacking from behind. I’m the 4th home for my fearful, young GSD and she’s coming along based on everything I’m learning from these videos. NBDA! Huge kudos and sending ❤ to this owner for taking on this dog then getting the help she needed to be successful. They did a super job.
The owner and her dog are lucky they met you and i think you are definitely a life saver. I have been watching all your videos for weeks now to get inspiration and be better at training my GSD. I like how you make sure to understand the dog, the situation, and how your videos are showing techniques and helpful tips. It brings me hope and I am sure I am not the only one to feel that way. I wish I was closer to your location!
I appreciate the breakdown of body language & different barks. My cattle dog is (seemingly) so random w/her reactivity. We've come a Long way, but I haven't been able to quite get her to accept that I'M the boss! 🤣 I know I'm missing something. I just wish I knew what it was because I feel like it's a fear reaction & now it's been 3yrs since I adopted her. I just want to be a great leader for her so she can feel safe & confident. 💜
Been working with a positive only trainer.... and our dog has become even more reactive. Before he wasn't reacting to people but now he is. Watching your videos gives me hope we can get this under control.
@Jessica Rana we moved back in September, so I'm not sure where to find a more balance trainer around us. So I've just been watching videos on UA-cam and doing the best I can on my own. I did get a prong collar for him the other day, but only used it twice so far. It does help some. We also ordered slip leads and a different martingale collar. We have 3 dogs total. My reactive pup was in a bad situation before we got him. He is our rescue pup. He's not a bad dog. Based on what I've been learning from Tom and a few others on here, he is fearful. Our three pups, we got them as a bit older, so we missed the socialization period and trying to do it now but it's a challenge. I know 100% my other two pups are fearful. I'm doing my best though.
@@brandimcnally2349 For almost three years now I've been dealing with aggressiveness towards other dogs with my sweet and kind (to humans) Shepherd that I got at 10 months old from a woman who hit him with towels and spatulas. He was terrified and ematiated when I got him. Make sure that when your dog encounters another dog that he goes crazy at that you just keep moving along and get him out of there. Don't do what I have done and try to get him to heel or sit to obey you on the prong as an alternative to going crazy at the other dog he is looking at. I fear that my dog has associated the discomfort and choking ("pain"?) from the prong (which I DO use correctly and as compassionately as possible) that he experiences as he pulls and lunges toward the other dog with other dogs. Don't do what I did. Don't demand a heel or a sit. Try to keep a loose leash. Also, don't yell at your dog to do things (like "sit", "quiet" etc.). Just redirect your dog's attention and move along and get him out of the situation that makes him uncomfortable. Like his shirt says, "It's okay of your dog doesn't like other dogs". Just ALLOW your dog to get out of the situation that makes him afraid. Don't force obedience with the prong while he is looking at another dog. This video DOES give me hope though. And my dog is the sweetest dog you could ever meet... unless you are a dog! Then he goes nuts. And he's never gotten to play with any other dogs because I've had him since covid started and I'm afraid he will attack other dogs if off-leash. The mean woman I go him from said that he played so violently with his 5 GSD brothers that they drew blood. In fact, he had a minor wound on his hip when I got him. Disclamer: I have no idea what I'm talking about. That's why my dog is still reactive towards other dogs. There are 3 AMAZING dog trainers on here. Obviously this channel is the best and has helped me A TON... and also Robert Cabral and Joel Beckman (though German Shepherds are the one dog that his "reversal method" to stop pulling does NOT work on). Joel doesn't use prongs because he mentioned once that he has seen dogs associate the "pain"/discomfort of the prong with the dog he is looking at while feeling the prong. When Joel finally got a GSD on his channel he quickly learned that flat collars do not work on them, so he recommends Gentle Leaders for them. My GSD pulls like crazy on a Gentle Leader. Like a horse. I have to say that in the first couple weeks with a crazy pulling dog the prong is MAGIC. In fact, I think it only took 4 prong "pop" corrections on my VERY FIRST WALK to totally change my Shepherd. When I did (do?) use the prong, I almost never ever need to give him a correction, but, the problem is that he does get them when he goes crazy trying to get to another dog. When my dog wears the prong he is a different dog. Even if I am not even connected to it! Hopefully mentioning the only other trainers on UA-cam who can even begin to approach Tom's level of magic doesn't disqualify me from the competition, cuz, God knows I need help! ;)
My Jack was a fearful pup when I adopted him. Tom your videos, my trainers, the NBDA club helped us immensely! The support through fails and wins is priceless. Thank you. ❤
Leash reactivity is a tough one to handle for inexperienced owners who have a large dog, I find the slip lead doesn’t give me the control I need but I’m hesitant to try a more extreme tool like a prong collar without proper guidance. I appreciate videos like this from you Tom, your help to the dog community is invaluable.
Tom has many videos on how to use the Herm Sprenger prong collar. You can buy one on his web site or on Amazon from a reputable seller. The prong is like the difference between power steering and manual on a car, it can be that dramatic. I have multiple dogs, let me give you 2 examples. I got a 6-8 yr old Bluetick Connhound who had been found, emaciated, on the streets and was at the shelter for 6 months. She had been adopted by a first time owner and returned. I asked the staff at the Humane Society to pick a dog for me and the gave me her. In the first 30 days I realized 3 things, she knew absolutely nothing, (not even housebroken), she absolutely would not respond to leash pressure with a slip (she would rather have choked to death) and she absolutely would not respond to food as a lure (frightened/anxious dogs will not initially respond to food for training.) I questioned everything I thought I knew about dog training and I’ve done my fair share at amateur levels. I kept thinking, omg, what did I get myself into? I watched enough of Tom’s videos to think ok, I’m going to try a HS prong. I got it from Amazon since he was out of stock and it came with rubber tips you could put on the prong ends which is perfect for very short fur dogs like hounds. I had never used one before and I was clumsy like any beginner will be but I did it anyway and experienced my first miracle. I gave a tug on the prong, nothing, I did it again and she looked at me in surprise and walked! By my side! I had been trying to get her to do it for weeks and she wouldn’t and then she did it within minutes with a prong. Now when she hears the jingle of the prong I use for my German Shepherd rescue who also knew nothing, the hound comes running wanting to do training too..and so does the Pitbull cross. They ALL come running when I take out the prong collar. That, my friend, is a freaking miracle tool to me 😂😂😂
I have two boys with issues. Watching these videos have really helped give me hope for them both. They are such sweet hearts, I just need the help on how to teach them. Thank you for sharing these videos and doing what you are meant to while on this earth Tom!
These videos speak directly to my situation, and have given me great insight to my deficits of being a handler. I have stepped up as a leader for my reactive girl and started to hold her more accountable for the little things, and amazed how it’s impacting the big things! Thanks tom!
We have a very similar situation with our newly adopted GSD. She is our fifth GSD, but the first one with leash and stranger reactivity. Always love watching your videos to gain insight and ways to work with her. I refuse to give up on her. She's such a sweet dog and you have given us hope!!
We have a 2 year old Rotti/Lab/Bordercollie mix that we took on at the one-year mark of his life. He is extremely smart and certainly more protective with my wife as she is not as confident with him. Consistently working with him (prong and E-collar now) he has shown amazing strides in the last year, however, we know he has a long way to go and respect his boundaries. These kinds of videos are super helpful for us owners who have a reactive dog! Thank you
Love your videos. Always learn something new. Admire Jerseys’s owner for all her work with a difficult, but not bad dog. Good luck to them. Would love to see a follow-up in a few months.
The confidence in this woman at the end interviews is what its ALL about!!! If the owner doesnt change, the dog NEVER will!! Fantastic job Tom and team for showing the owner what is possiboe and providing HER with confidence and courage to continue work with Jersey!! Really enjoyed this. Dogs are easy to train - Humans, not so much!! Great work!
Because of your videos, my dog knows how to heel. As I improve myself and how I deal with reactive situations, the less blowouts, the better the relationship I have with my dog, and the happier we both are. Thank you.
My GSD is a sweetheart in the house. We have people over with no issues. He’s stand-offish at first and eventually warms up. Outside he’s super protective. People can’t even say hi without him growling or barking/lunging. And dogs have to be at a distance. If they get close he hates it. He broke the prong collar once and went at 2 little dogs. He sat his butt down and barked at them Didn’t touch them. No clue what this means.
This dog is so lucky to have an owner like this. This has been my fear for my Australian shepherd. I love these videos. Really has helped me understand her anxiety and fear vs being aggressive.
Great video! I love how you explain everything as it's happening. One thing I'd like to point out, which I think is interesting is, at about 5:38 in the video, when you approach the owner, then turn around to walk away,, the dog does a whole body shake. That I feel is the turning point. I call it shaking of the bad juju. After that, she seems to be more accepting of you and those around her.
We have a 15 month old American bully and are really struggling with reactivity towards other dogs. Seeing transformation videos like this gives me hope!
Thank you for letting us know that these behaviors are manageable no matter what they are with the training you always demonstrate It literally gives me real peace of mind when I’m having a tough time with my dog 😅❤
I foster GSD as when I can and had a foster dog react this way and sometime redirect back at you. Its very helpful to watch and learn from your videos. Good luck to the owner and dog! Thanks for the video.
Great as always, Tom. Would love to do a Zoom training with you one day. Your videos have helped so much in the past, with my aggressive Mexican street dog. Now I just have a fearful barker and a puppy. Thanks for the help. Come to Cancun!!
I love your training video! I follow you as a trainer! Your technique is consistent and you get results. I always recommend people to watch your videos! I would love to be able to be a dog trainer that helps dog owners to have a better relationship and understanding of their dogs.
I use to have a dog exactly like this and I wish I saw this video sooner. It was so upsetting because I really wanted to keep the dog and but I guess she couldn’t help with the anger she had with my mother. She loved me and never growled at me but had a tendency to be aggressive toward everyone who walked into the house and my family. It was upsetting and she had to go to another foster. Thankfully that dog is doing okay with the new foster and have a new munchkin with me and I just adopted
I went to the park with my daughter yesterday and there’s a dog park next to the kids park. Since I’ve learned more about dog training and watching people interact (or not interact) with their dog it was veryyyy interesting to just watch. I saw red flags everywhere I even watched a guy kick his dog 😡 I so badly just wanted to help all these people fix their relationships with their pups 😫

Way to really differentiate the fearful and aggressive bark. I for one have a hard time reading into behaviors but that break down was great. Thank you.
Happy it helped you!
Thank you so much!
It is so amazing how you read dog behavior. Most people would say the dog is aggressive when they are fearful. I love watching you work with dogs.
Thanks Nancy!
Always learning from you Tom!
Thank you!
I wish my life we could get some help from Tom and his team in Montréal with our German Shepherd puppy!

The body language breakdown in this video is so helpful! Love seeing this dog and owner’s progress.
I am happy you liked it, we weren't sure you guys would like the style.
Thanks for watching, Karen. We appreciate you watching!
Thank you for making a difference for people and their dogs.❤❤
Thanks for watching, Debra!
The change in Jersey is amazing. Thanks for helping so many dogs and their families have happier lives.
Thanks, Jasmine!
Huge difference for this dog! Never give up.

Great way to show her evolution in just a few short days. You’re sooo right this is YOUR reason for being. All love ❤️
Thank you, Rylie.
Excellent dog mom. So many people just give up. Dogs reflect our feelings. Stressed mom, stressed dog. Confident mom, happier dog.
Once you see what works for your dog, it offers so much more freedom! So happy that he showed you exactly what you needed!
Thanks for watching, Linda!

Thanks for watching!
1:44 I love how Tom slows down and breaks down the video and gives us a play by play of the dogs behavior.
Thank you so much for this valuable feedback :)
Thanks for watching :)
My cattle dog is similar as well, just be consistent on working with them!
These are the stories i love to watch and share. Amazing transformation. Hard work, dedication and direction.

Been working with a positive only trainer.... and our dog has become even more reactive. Before he wasn't reacting to people but now he is. Watching your videos gives me hope we can get this under control.
Same for me!! I finally started working with a balanced trainer and it's a game changer. Positive only was just not working for us!
Happy it helps, never give up!
Hopefully mentioning the only other trainers on UA-cam who can even begin to approach Tom's level of magic doesn't disqualify me from the competition, cuz, God knows I need help! ;)
Cos he can get away with it, do you let your kid run up & hit folk or do you correct them?
Honestly made me so emotional, it hurts when you feel like you’ve completely run out of options .
My Jack was a fearful pup when I adopted him. Tom your videos, my trainers, the NBDA club helped us immensely! The support through fails and wins is priceless. Thank you. ❤
Thanks, Sandy! :)
You did such a great job with her and such a great job with your staff. You all do amazing work.
That, my friend, is a freaking miracle tool to me 😂😂😂
Thanks, Sam
I have two boys with issues. Watching these videos have really helped give me hope for them both. They are such sweet hearts, I just need the help on how to teach them. Thank you for sharing these videos and doing what you are meant to while on this earth Tom!

@@PraiseBright noooo I missed this comment😭
These videos speak directly to my situation, and have given me great insight to my deficits of being a handler. I have stepped up as a leader for my reactive girl and started to hold her more accountable for the little things, and amazed how it’s impacting the big things! Thanks tom!
Hope it helps!
We have a very similar situation with our newly adopted GSD. She is our fifth GSD, but the first one with leash and stranger reactivity. Always love watching your videos to gain insight and ways to work with her. I refuse to give up on her. She's such a sweet dog and you have given us hope!!

Great vid and the edits were so smooth! Hugs to Zach from Wiley & Nellie Class of 2021
We have a 2 year old Rotti/Lab/Bordercollie mix that we took on at the one-year mark of his life.
Thank you

Thank you Susan!
Amazing transformation!
I’m really liking the new format to your videos, especially breaking down and explaining the dogs behavior.
Thank you! We have been working hard on it!
Thank you for this video! It's a great educational experience for us regular dog owners.
Thanks for watching!
I've been a big fan for a long time! Your videos helped me train my dog into the best dog I've ever had. Keep them coming!

Thank you!!!!

It literally gives me real peace of mind when I’m having a tough time with my dog 😅❤

I foster GSD as when I can and had a foster dog react this way and sometime redirect back at you. Its very helpful to watch and learn from your videos. Good luck to the owner and dog! Thanks for the video.
Thank you!
Love the behavior walkthrough!!! Important points on screen help focus and the comparison of barks side by side was great:)
Thank you, Lena!
Great as always, Tom. Would love to do a Zoom training with you one day. Your videos have helped so much in the past, with my aggressive Mexican street dog. Now I just have a fearful barker and a puppy. Thanks for the help. Come to Cancun!!
Thanks so much, Liz!
I love your training video! I follow you as a trainer! Your technique is consistent and you get results. I always recommend people to watch your videos! I would love to be able to be a dog trainer that helps dog owners to have a better relationship and understanding of their dogs.
Thank you, Michelle!
Same, it;s tough.
My dog acts just like this! I always knew her reactivity was fear based but I never knew that the way she barked was indicative of that
Wow wow wow, this is the best dog training Video that I’ve seen to date.
You break down the behavior one by one and makes it so easy to understand and the production quality is getting better and better each video.
Thank you so much for doing what you do. I always learn something new watching your video and listening to your podcast
wow, thank you!
