'Speak English or Die' is a play centred on the mutual attraction between two people who could never completely love each other. Ali is a Lebanese Muslim who has grown up in Australia. He respects his family and is a devout Muslim, but neglects his morals and beliefs when he meets Mouche, an Australian woman whose creative interest lies in the Middle East but who is an ardent Atheist. It seems like a set up for a Romeo and Juliet tale of two feuding family's with opposite beliefs and culture, and their two young lovers, fighting to be together. It simply isn't. This is an incredible script stabilised on real-life pure attraction and the glimmering moments of love which dissipate as quickly as they are founded. The sad truth is, when family and faith are the cornerstones of an individual's existence, turning on them means losing yourself.
