The thought of that monster running away gives me the chills. I recommissioned a 2 cylinder Detroit on a crawler that had been sitting twenty years, that was unnerving enough when it first fired up.
When I was in diesel school many years ago the instructor always had a 10-pound CO2 fire extinguisher in hand, ready for immediate use when starting up a rebuilt or salvaged Detroit Diesel 2 stroke engine. It was a highly effective but harmless way of immediately shutting down an engine. Spraying carbon dioxide into the intake of an engine instantly "suffocates" the engine and stops combustion.
@@frazzledude Most detroit 2-strokes had a flapper valve in the intake somewhere to choke them off because they're so prone to fucking off. Then again proper procedure on awakening a long dormant screaming jimmy also helps; when they fuck off like that it's almost always racks stuck wide fucking open because the governor pins them open when it shuts down(Governor has no idea the engine is shut off and perceives the engine to be under target RPM so it tries to throttle it up) and they just gum up in that position over time.
Even rocking pairs I was told makes to best engines...i.e. 4,8,12,16 cylinders, as opposed to v-6 is 3 pairs, v-10 5 pairs: THAT thing is a beast and must make gobs of torque with a large well rounded torque band on a graph.
I would have to disagree, In-line 6 engines are some of the best balanced and most reliable engines in the world. It fires in pairs of 2 starting from outer two cylinders working inward
When he revs it, it's like, it goes from an evil laugh idle to a mean roar... and when he releases the throttle it revs down like a crazy manic laugh because it thought each roar was funny
I want this engine! I'm not sure what I'd put it in, but I'll figure it out as I go if I have to. Hell, maybe find one and scan it into a computer so I could cad some ideas to test on the engine. After all, everyone wants more than 3 miles per gallon. This sounds almost like a gallons per mile engine though. Lol.love how it sounds though.
Ah yes 2 minutes of running and a solid 3-4 litres gone. Everyone knows they were not fuel efficient in trucks but these things were true work horses in the excavation industry. Could run all day without an issue, well only one small one they leaked oil ha ha

Detroit diesel is such crazy concept. 2 stroke with wet sump and exhaust valves. Are this setup have any advantage over regular 4 stroke diesel? Everyone says that they eat fuel and deliver low power, if they are that ineficient why they were made than?
@@lordred7462 if comparing them to modern four stroke computer controlled turbo charged engines, then yes they fall short in the power/MPG departments. In 1938 when they were introduced, they were considered revolutionary. They made it possible to have a powerful diesel for a confined space. The two stroke cycle they use has the same advantage any two stroke has over a four stroke engine. The two stroke engine makes power on every other stroke of the crank, whereas the four stroke has to complete four strokes in order to make one power cycle.
You can see it guzzling the fuel can.
What a beaut!
Half gallon/2l.
V12 Detroit gets 3 mpg turbos a little better hauling a refertrailer!
I'm not even sure how to describe how that sounds. Like a sinister evil but beautiful sounding symphony.
What a Beast!
It’s just plain out anger in a engine
Exactly. It’s like some fusion powered V8 sound
Idk sounds like an engine to me
sounds like mad max stuff

O ya, gotta check them racks before givin' er the beans :)
A few seconds before a Detroit runs away you can faintly hear it whisper, fuuuk yoou. 😆

Detroit 2s symphony at its best!!😍

Often times large marine vessels such as tugs and trawlers.

this one was fitted in a locomotive engine.
it was changed due to pulotion regulations.
