Hi, I’m a Deaf person trying to watch this with auto caption (not the best) but when you refer to the wide shot, there’s a reason for this. Most of the time, in mainstream media, when a Deaf actor in the shot, the language is not properly shown because it’s being cut out and we can’t see what they’re signing. It’s basically the same if you are talking to someone and they cutting out certain word and you can’t hear them say it. It’s literally the same. So I appreciate the choice they made with full shot because that is considered respectful and appropriate in Deaf culture, we call it “signing space” like a box frame shape. So if any time the box frame is out of the shot, we can’t understand (hence we can’t see it) and it’s also considered ASL not a verbal language. What they are doing is called SIMCOM (talking and signing at same time) it’s a system, not a language. So the production and people behind this took a lot of time doing research and working with Deaf people, Deaf writers and Deaf consultants. So this is a big deal of representation and why I am so thrilled to see this sort of representation.
Side note: maybe it’s not hitting the way of your expectations because you are not Deaf. As a Deaf person, I felt that whole moment because of the ASL and you would know if you knew the language other than just subtitles. It!s exactly why I am thrilled to see Deaf perspective rather the typical Hearing perspective because you gets to see our world that way. How rare of an opportunity do you get that?

I love how we see that Maya wasn’t raised to be a criminal from the beginning. Her father and Fisk tried to give her a normal life and shelter her from this violence, but she was *naturally* drawn to it. She wanted this life. And now that she has reconnected with her roots she sees a better, more fulfilling life.
Also I would love a What If episode where we see what would happen if Maya actually ACCEPTED Wilson’s offer to become Queenpin.

I know if i dont like the critic then dont watch the channel will be said, however some things need to be pointed out. Asking why they went to a wide shot. Its ASL we have to see them signed. Thats why many of these shots are wide shot. Just because its not the way you prefer doesnt mean its bad. That goes for pacing or anything else.

When I was a Paramedic, I had a patient who was shot in the head and he was talking to me and fighting me when I was trying to treat him. People are hard to kill. I had another who's face was shot off. Both survived. It's not like on TV. Everyone who's shot doesn't die.
I liked Echo. It was well made, it was different from the usual, the Choctaw culture is incredible, and I loved the fighting scenes. This is another Marvel show where a powerful man grooms a child to kill. Think Thanos, Ego, and now, Kingpin. I'm glad to see Marvel using real places and exploring characters and emotions. Do I think the executives didn't make them chop it up? No. But, I did like it.

    • @muhammadfaisal5Y5

Exactly, Fisk walking away with Maya resembled Thanos holding hands with Gamora while her people get murdered.
With the death part, someone only dies if there brain or the heart stops functioning right. Even if part of their brain is gone, if they are breathing then they are alive. I remember reading Jurassic Park and there was something about being attacked by animals. People have this perception that you die immediately but the person who is attacked is actually still alive while their flesh is being ripped off.

The reason they had to do a wide shot was because she was signing, this isn’t a conventional show, you can’t be doing Cillian Murphy closeups. They had to ensure that the sign language was in shot as well, because the same would have to be done for Maya as well, if you notice every time there’s a “close up” their hands are in the shot too

  • @agresticumbra

    @CinePals,
1:34 So you really don't know about Kingpin? He's human, sure, but he's superhuman in the comics. He looks like a fat person, but Kingpin is said to be something like 97% muscle. Yeah, getting shot in the face a point-blank range should be fatal, but they're taking a moment out of the comic book and putting it on screen sort of like Thanos had to snap his fingers to use the Infinity stones when he very clearly didn't have to--we saw him use the space stone, time stone, reality stone, etc. without snapping his fingers through two movies, but because several characters kept telling us he had to snap his fingers, many people actually believed that one must snap their fingers to make the stones work when you actually don't. Anyway, Kingpin tanked the bullet in the comic so, he has to tank it in the series too. It's fiction, so don't try this stuff at home, alright? =P
4:20 Aside from the echo effect with the lyrics?
    6:19 Preach!
7:10 MCU Kingpin doesn't have any biological children. He liked what he saw in Maya as a little girl and eventually arranged for her father to be removed from the picture to make her his. Maya is his MCU child!
10:33 Because this series is for the hearing impaired more than for those of us who can actually hear? Its star is a hearing-impaired actress, a lot of the decisions made for this series were made with her interest in mind, as well as those of Native Americans. Why should they have to read subtitles when they can finally see their language signed, Jaby? Let the hearing impaired have their moment--they don't get many of them, you know? Every MCU project has an audience. If you keep the target audience in mind while viewing, you can probably understand why certain things were done this way or that in this series as opposed to other MCU projects.
12:41 I suspect not, and I hope not. Tony's not related to Steve and Rhody isn't related to T'Chala. We can have multiple Native American characters in the MCU that have no familial relations to others too. The MCU told us that Kahhori was Mohawk, and we were told that Maya is Choctaw. I'm not an expert on the many Native American tribes, but I figure they are like any other ethnic group, diverse: not all Asians are Chinese, not all Black People are Nigerian, and not all White people are British. What did What If? teach us? Kahhori's power came from the Tesseract. Echo is teaching us that her people came from a different plane of existence and were magical from the start.
14:57 I don't think so. He gave that to her as a gift to help her in every situation, not just with him. He wears a Bluetooth earpiece that has a camera and translator speaking into his ear--pretty cool tech, really. I know you too wish he learned signed language, but given how close these two are supposed to be, Vincent probably couldn't learn ASL fast enough in the time they had and instead of giving you closeups of him half-assing it, they came up with something better. It also helps the story, really. If Kingpin really wanted to be like a father to her, he would have learned ASL, but he sees her more of a useful tool...but also as a daughter.

Jaby is so want to see a typical movie/show/Hollywood way of shooting stuff. There is no slow down or staring down in real life. About the whispering there is no need to shout when you're signing. A deaf person can not hear you neither you shout or not. Also the whispering forces us to pay attention on the subtitle so we would not miss when the other person who can not talk signs.

Kingpin sign language tech analyzer is similar to the taskmaster fight pattern technology which was probably a stolen piece of Stark software because Tony used it on Captain America during Captain America civil war which could have been sold to kingpin by William mysterio's number 2 guy who was also in the first Iron Man movie who Obadiah stane yelled at. This all makes sense when you think about the weight kingpin treats Maya is the exact same way Dreykov treated his own daughter and the black widows and the only difference on the two is Dreykov is more up front about his intentions and his opinion on women. While kingpin is more subtle on the way his perceive with his true intentions always being hidden and his true gold being unrecognizable to the average person.

Fisk uses the hammer as a prop. He wants to push Maya towards murder(he would not have allowed her to use it) to complete her journey towards the dark side and remove her again from her true heritage. I loved the metaphor that Fisk is actually a colonizer in the story. He is wanting to control and bring everyone into his world until he has no more use for them. Like his deaf interpreter, there is only one exit plan to leave Fisk.

you were wondering if there was a connection to the What If? show Kahhori and Echo? The only connection i know if is Devery Jacobs. She plays both Bonnie in Echo and is the voice of Kahhori in What If. Ok, here is were i go on a mini rant, not about the show, but about how you are seeing certain scenes. you were going on at length about how they shot certain scenes like how when Maya walked up to her grandma and they acted like it was nothing. You cannot view this through non-native eyes. See, thats how it is at times when both parties are astranged from each other, especially for so many years, and there are unresolved issues. They are just being polite to maintain the peace until the issues are either resolved or they seperate from conversation. ALL of this is seen though the eyes of an indigenous person and their particular ways. so please, try to be a bit more open to some of the creative choices. as being someone who is of indigenous heritage, i understood it. it made sense to me.

By the way, Kingpin is a very tough dude who kicks spider man's ass quite a bit. Among others. So there's no doubt in my mind he would survive a bullet to the eye.
Secondly, Maya mentions this, but he's not the type of guy that would bother to learn sign language. He would much rather spend money on high-tech. I mean, he has plenty of it.

I really liked how this episode demonstrates how multidimensional Fisk is as a character. He's manipulative and puts his business first and presumably killed Maya's father because of some dispute (possibly that the father was planning to leave the business? Maybe we'll find out in the last episode? 🤷‍♂) BUT he also simultaneously genuinely cares about Maya in his own way, to the extent that he absolutely clearly didn't want to kill her and still sees her as his potential heir to the throne and his legacy some day. Fisk is manipulative but is so in such a way that he's not actually lying to Maya, he's just presenting the truth in such a way that he hopes she will relent and come back into the fold.
I definitely agree that between this and the grandmother's scene this is the best episode of the series so far. We'll see how it plays out in the final act, but overall I think the show is decent, if somewhat flawed or confused in some ways. It's not my favorite MCU offering but I think Maya's character shows enough potential that I hope they can do a second season but which can tell a new story of its own with a little less meandering and fewer plot holes. The core is there for a potentially great show, it just needs some polish to get there.

I think that the moment that Henry dropped Maya off at the Grandma's house was done very well. I think the quickness was to point out that he was tired of the back and forth, and he wanted her to go talk to her right now. I think that shows through in the words that he uses.

I read somewhere that they weren't going to have Echo become the "hero" of her story, because she's a villain / anti-hero, and the first scene made me think they were going to go this route. It would have been an interesting twist. I enjoyed the scenes between Maya and Fisk, they were tense. But if this was an 8 episode show, they could have done much more with it. The flashback scenes, specially the birthing scene, were some of the best parts of the show.

If you get closer to her face, you cut off the signing which defeats a large part of the representation of the series.... There is no story connection with What If as yet, but the lady who plays Bonnie did the voice acting for the main character.
"I want the content to be emotional for me as well. I want to feel as emotional as possible..." And you don't think the character that this is based off of should be as relatable as possible to those who are hearing impaired and sign? By cutting the crops to make you happy, you then cut out a huge part for those this is being made for. There is a reason they had ASL experts on the staff for production.

I know it's kinda wrong, but I was laughing when little Maya kicked that A-hole also. I didn't feel sorry for that guy at all. You shouldn't be mean like that to a kid.
The grandma performance definitely was great in this episode, but I wish there was more back story about Taloa being a healer like with the other ancestors. Maybe her mother's hands glowed with the power of the ancestors when she laid hands on people who were sick to heal them would've been a really nice reveal. The episode was named "Taloa", but we didn't even see much of her at all except for a few flashbacks.
I'm actually wondering if Kingpin didn't have anything to do with the death of Maya's father and it was just Kazi in Hawkeye wanting to move up the ladder by getting her father and his crew out of the way. Although Kingpin could've also told Kazi that if he leaked the info to Ronin he'd move him up in the Tracksuit Mafia.
The end credits Native song was hitting. It had me tapping my foot the whole time.
Loved the reaction and looking forward to the next one. 👍👍✌ out

You would literally be excluding deaf viewers, by not showing the signing. When Biscuit and his friend where in the junk yard/field talking with their back to the camera, it took you out the scene. Imagine being deaf and not being able to see your visual language expressed fully.

Thank you, Jaby, for explaining to Achara the issues with the show!
Achara is giving a lot of passes to the subpar material in this show. It seems like it realizes a good portion of bad decisions in the show but she doesn’t want to say anything that it’s a “positive”. Doing that isn’t going to help the help us get better written and shot movies or shows.
She even said “it’s marvel” as a defense of why the show didn’t send more time on an emotional scene!

I have nothing against all the signing. Its great representation. But i kind of agree with Jaby. They've hired all these great native actors and they are restricted with just hand signs, they're acting is not fully being let shine. Sometimes they aren't speaking or emoting, other times they're not doing close ups to their faces.

    • @rode8927
      @rode8927 7 місяців тому

I don't think it's too restrictive. I think they just needed a better director who understands how to guide the actors with the sign language. For them, it's not just about memorizing the lines, as they would normally, but having to adjust to the body movements and express the emotional aspects of the signing that makes it slightly more challenging.

I’m not sure if this is sarcasm or not but imo the finale is powerful (the best episode) even tho it’s short and can feel rushed as the whole show again imo is an unfinished potential. It could have been a great series with much deeper and well written script and with 8-10 episodes 40 at least minutes long, not like 5 short episodes. I liked Maya character and wished Marvel would do proper justice to this project…
