  • Welcome back to the channel for the first video back in 6 months.
    Motorsport Photography has become a big part of my life in the last 3 years, I was lucky enough to get a start with the Victorian Drift Club and through a lot of work and many MANY hours of photographing events around Australia I've been lucky to travel around the country to shoot events in some pretty high level categories including V8 Supercars, TCR and National Drifting.
    I have outlined the basic steps to try and get as many other people excited and passionate about motorsport photography.
    If there's anything you think I've forgotten feel free to leave a comment.

      Great to hear mate, there really is nothing stopping you from giving it a go. It can be a long journey to get into a high tier event but the community is really positive and accepting.
      Same as the car community for the most part, would love to hear how you go

    Soon to be shooting video of ARA Rally in the US, I appreciated the mention of just how dangerous rally can be to shoot, I've been to a couple of events already but I was in the general public spectator spots. Sno*drift will be my first event and I have no idea what I'm in for, so this helped

      I’m a accredited photographer in Australia (Victoria) and while I’m shootings most car events I get asked a million question from amateur photographers asking the steps about getting an accreditation and how it works, benefits, places on the track where the public can’t go, can I go to all the Motorsport racing events for free, can I shoot F1. Bronze silver and gold accreditation and a normal event weekend from the moment I arrive to the end of day l. How do I travel on a flight will all my heavy gear and the big question “how do I make money”

    • @JamesFMedia
      @JamesFMedia  Рік тому +1

      @Benjamin White I feel that pain, it seems to just come with the territory unfortunately. I get the same thing happen to me at almost every event.
      I'll look into making a more in-depth video on accreditations so hopefully people can just watch that instead of asking 20 questions. Don't hold your breath though 🤣

    U think i will be good enough with a 35-150mm lens on a sony a7? Will shoot alot of rally because thats the most accessible here in Belgium. I will have to save for a prime lens too but think this is second priority

    • @JamesFMedia
      @JamesFMedia  3 місяці тому +1

      Absolutely mate, you can use whatever lenses you’ve got. As I mention in the video, for slower pans you’re stopping the lens down to f/8 or sometimes even further so you’re generally past the point of lens softness.
      If you’re shooting more high shutter speeds shots you might find you’re aperture limited but generally it’s not that big of an issue. Keep using the gear you’ve got and only upgrade when you think you’re limited by the gear

      Yeah some places mandate it, others should but don’t. It’s worth having if for nothing other than reputation and insurance. I do agree it’s frustrating seeing people with no creds coming in but sadly that’s a fact of life

    What sort of camera would u recommend for beginning motorsport photography?

    • @JamesFMedia
      @JamesFMedia  8 місяців тому

      That’s a great question, it really depends on where you’re starting from. If you already have a camera just use that and work your way into better lenses.
      If you’re starting from scratch, I’d personally recommend looking for a Sony Mirrorless camera like an A7III for full frame or an A6400 for crop.
      Otherwise you can get good prices on old Canon DSLRs and the lenses are really cheap because everyone is switching to mirrorless.

    Hey man... what a nice video... I'm a teacher, I'm not a photographer but, I love photography and motorsports. I've been thinking about getting in motorsport photography just for fun for now. Here in Brazil gear is extremely expensive. I own a canon 60d and some lenses... 24mm, 50mm, 18-200mm, 18-135mm and 10-18mm... I also have a gopro... do you think that is enough to start? Great video man! COngrats and thanks!

    • @JamesFMedia
      @JamesFMedia  Рік тому

      Hey Carlos, absolutely that gear would be enough to start. As the 60d is a crop sensor all of your lenses will gain extra distance. So you’ll have up to about a 300mm equivalent which is perfect for almost everywhere.
      Focus on getting fundamentals down with the gear you’ve got and you’ll be surprised at the quality of shots you can get with basic gear.
      Keep at it and hopefully with time you’ll be able to afford the more expensive gear

    Im in new Zealand and im too young to get a motorsport photography license, do you have any tips for how i can take photos of motorsport without one?

    • @JamesFMedia
      @JamesFMedia  Рік тому +1

      Hey Leon, thanks for reaching out. For sure if you can’t get a media pass to shoot from restricted areas you can still purchase a spectator ticket and bring your gear and shoot from the spectator areas. All the same techniques apply, you just have to worry about fences and other issues.
      You can see my F1 images from Albert park on Instagram for reference, they were shoot entirely from GA spectator areas.
      Once you build a portfolio you can apply for a media pass when you’re old enough and it will be given much more consideration

    What do you think on the canon eos 650d to get me started on a budget?

    • @JamesFMedia
      @JamesFMedia  Рік тому

      A 650d is a perfectly capable camera for Motorsport, you’ve got AI Servo focus and a 5 FPS burst mode as well. Additionally having access to the massive collection of new and used EF lenses will serve you well for a long time to come. With Canon focusing on mirror less you can get some very cheap prices on the old DSLR gear.

    You need a license in Australia? That's ridiculous

    • @JamesFMedia
      @JamesFMedia  6 місяців тому

      It’s not so much a license in the traditional sense it’s an accreditation. It allows the hosts to recognise people that meet a minimum standard of work as well as providing your insurances.
      You can attend events without the accreditation but you will need to source your own insurance. For 99% of people it’s cheaper to pay $200 a year for it to all be sorted for you

    Do you think a 70 - 200 lens is enough for motor cycle speedway? PS. you should have shown the whole of the film of the Irish rally car hitting the wall, because the photographer just carried on taking photos!

    • @JamesFMedia
      @JamesFMedia  Рік тому +1

      I’m not 100% sure as I’ve never shot motorcycle speedway before but realistically a 70-200 will be able to do a lot it just depends on what your access is and how close you can get. Remember you can always crop later.
      I knew there was a longer version but I was in a bit of a hurry to finish the video so just took the first one I could find
