Scholz Beer Garten is widely recognized as one of the oldest bars in the United States.
Founded in 1866 by German immigrant and Confederate Civil War soldier, August Scholz, this place has seen Austin, Texas, and even America grow around it.
It was originally a single room saloon built above a boarding house, Scholz quickly began adding on as the large German population of Austin made the place a popular destination for immigrant-Americans wanting a piece of home.
Scholz eventually added the portion that really made them famous--the beer garden--and it has been making history ever since.
