The Royalties fr UB40 version changed his life, he was sleeping rough in Montego Bay but with the money he built a house. A friend of mine interviewed him last month in Jamaica on his birthday. He is 87 years young!!
RIP Ken Patrick, sadly passed away yesterday 30/6/23, in the morning. I learnt it the very same day in the evening to my surprise because right that very morning I had listened to his hilarious calypso/ mento track "Big bamboo" after some time without listening to his stuff. Ska gems such as "Man to man" & "Don't stay out of late", and its beautiful rocksteady "Such is life" will always play in my house. Thank you Lord Creator.
This could never be UB 40 song. This is a song of Kingston,Jamaica.I know this song from my youth as a child. The original is the best version, but UB 40 also has a lovely version.Lord Creator was a Trini.RIP, Lord Creator.
I’ll never know what my dad went through as a young man. He was troubled as I am. But oddly enough, he fell in love with Reggae at a young age, in the golden age of flight (where traveling was cheap but risky!) I know he went to a lot of places and was probably the only white dude a lot of times. I’d like to think, somewhere along the way, he was hunkered down in a bar while this tune twanged on; with all the wonderful grainy scratches and notes that makes this song so great. I remember hearing it on a cassette when I was very young riding in his AMC Javelin and Chevy truck
I heard this song with UB40 in 1992 and I always loved it. I knew many of UB40s tracks were covers but I would have never known who the original artist was, that is until 30 years later.
Lord creator born in Trinidad , moved to Jamaica. Jamaica truly was the epicenter of the English & Dutch West Indies at that time. Sill is but some of our shine has been tarnished due mostly to our politics and self induced bad decisions I still have hope for Jamaica but we Jamaicans need a paradigm shift in our consciousness and spirituality..
Well said :) I'm not Jamaican either, but have always regarded reggae as the greatest genre. Reggae shatters stereotypes and preconceived notions and most importantly, brings people together. I saw UB40 live last night in NY and it was an amazing feeling to be part of that crowd. People of all colors and ages were jamming to beautiful music; they were united as one. I think that's one of UB40's greatest strength - helping people put their differences aside and embrace the power of music!
As for UB40, they didn't ruin anything! Lord Creator only gained from the success that UB40 brought to this song. They are an incredibly talented band and those who are skeptical about UB40's popularity and musical accomplishments should pay a visit to Jamaica and see for themselves how much the locals love their songs. That's real success to me; they are not only accepted, but they are admired and praised for their originality and for their ability to capture the essence of reggae music.
There is magic in Kingston Town, oh Kingston Town the place I love to be. I was 9 years old when I heard this song on a hot summer day back in the Caribbean and is been close to my heart all the time.

The problem with the ub 40 they don't write there own songs most of their songs are just covers from different artists let's look at Bob Marley, Mr Bush doctor Peter Tosh and the African raggae artists Alpha Blondy, Lucky Dube ,they all write there own songs that's what the ub 40 failed to do

I won't say I am a old school reggae fan, or even fit the term fan; but at least I have heard these songs. This is why I love (certain) radio stations, you hear incredible songs you wouldn't have otherwise heard of. I don't listen to that much reggae, most of them are annoying and repetitive, but some of them, mostly the old school ones, are awesome. It makes me sad that such beautiful songs get ignored while the ugliest of shit becomes popular!
