If the amount of power coming from the alternator controls the speed of the air compressor, why don't they put it in higher notch and leave it there to build pressure faster? And it seems like notching it up and down like that could burn out the traction motors over time.
I agree that it doesn't make sense. That's just what the conductor on this train told me is that they notch it up while in neutral to help build pressure.

The notching up and down helps build air pressure. As he said, they had just couple to a cut of cars so they were building air to release the breaks.
