    A re-build EMD SD40-2. Fort Worth & Western Rail FWWR. One of my favorite EMD locomotives. Some of them are Union Pacific's SD40-2's.

    Nice! Strange how they kept notching it up and down, were they performing work on it or something? I'm be looking forward to the 1983 video.

      The beginning of hearing it notch up and down was done as they had just reversed to couple up to a set of cars. After that he just continued to idle it.

      The notching up and down helps build air pressure. As he said, they had just couple to a cut of cars so they were building air to release the breaks.

      ***** That doesn't make sense to me. If the amount of power coming from the alternator controls the speed of the air compressor, why don't they put it in higher notch and leave it there to build pressure faster? And it seems like notching it up and down like that could burn out the traction motors over time.

      I agree that it doesn't make sense. That's just what the conductor on this train told me is that they notch it up while in neutral to help build pressure.

    И-ЭМ-ДИ, ЭС-ДИ-ФОРИ--ДАШ-ТУ Локомотив, Лакомойтивь! АЙДАЛИНГ! Мотор кружится, и тепловоз гудит, тарахтит! Ой видимо, сейчас воздушный авто-компрессор автоматически включился! Чтобы воздух можно было накачать в компрессоры и в дополнительные систерны, баллончики! Чтобы потом тепловоз и автоматические вагоны могли тормозить со своими воздушными тормозами! Аш скрипеть и вирбрирывать всё будет! Осторожно!
