Watching you comfort the abused Playstation 4 almost broke me. I was in tears. Of laughter.
@@TheCod3r It's when it stops looking like acting we need to be worried lol.
Coming from a USA perspective, it really feels like our British friends are more into the idea of repair, which makes me happy. Over here it’s extremely rare to see a repair place that isn’t dedicated solely to phone repair (batteries, screens, easy stuff)
It's really the same here mate to be honest. I bought 8 consoles this week from the ebay pages for CEX and "Cash Converters" which are both second hand stores, and all consoles are sold as faulty. There really doesn't seem to be many places doing it 😕
Absolutely agree - We do lots of repairs of varying types and we have an expert at BGA stuff too. I don't tend to do that myself though
Love watching you reball chips, so relaxing, the moment when the solder melts and jumps in place is always a satisfying moment
Great work as always.
Thank you.
Thanks mate, it does look pretty cool. I wish I could leave the whole process in sometimes but I don't like the videos to go over an hour because of the algorithm
I recently found your channel and you have helped me tons with some of my repairs. You are a remarkably smart technician and I have enjoyed going back and watching all your older videos.
Glad I'm not the only one who talks to the tech I'm repairing!!!
CEX sends products to the middle man when they can't be arsed to fix the issue themselves. New viewer of yours and I must say, you know your stuff and I learn from your videos. Keep up the good work 👌🏻
Yeah they seem to pick the less experienced people though haha 😄 cheers buddy much appreciated
No..they don't...they just send you it back with a sticker saying "unrepairable "
@@livelongandprosper70 I've had mates that worked for a company that fixed tech that was sent in by CEX to be repaired. They send the stuff that will make them money, the staff that work at CEX are there to sell, that's it.
We have a CEX near me in Leamington Spa and you are right they claim to be able to do advanced repairs
It's such a refreshing change to watch someone capable of component level repair rather than part swappers. I used to do the same job you do albeit without the high end equipment. Investigation, supposition and logical outcome to trace faults is fascinating to watch. Look forward to your next stream whilst checking out your previous content. Brilliant.
yes mate me too and isn't he brilliant!, he would have been very busy during rrod and ylod.
really enjoyed that video! I am sure CEX will be looking forward to you visiting again soon!
To be honest, I don't even know what a transistor is 😂. I just love watching you fix things while being honest and transparent with your customers. Subscribed ❤️
Think of a transistor as a "Transfer Resistor" that is exactly how it works and is an old analogy I was taught, applying current to the base lead, makes the collector emitter junction low resistance. It would normally be much higher. That is why it acts like a switch
Mate you are brilliant. Chuckling away throughout the video. All the best with your channel.
Lovely to watch a craftsman at work... excellent video.
"The console wisperer" part totally cracked me up. "Ho has been mean to you? No you're not ugly." 🤣🤣
hahaha I thought that would get a few people :) I tend to have some weird moments of madness every so often if I've been working too much haha
Love watching a knowledgeable expert at work. Thanks for a great video.
Love the content brother
Have you considered doing a noob series? Like on how to do basic electrical diagnostics?
Like you are using tools to measure voltages on capacitors etc in videos and I have got a clue what you are doing or how the tools work.
But would love to learn
Amazing work mate. Love it. Keep the videos coming!
cex staff couldn't fix a broken light blub i wouldn't recommend there repair services to anyone, just looking at the staff in there says it all!, your videos are amazing keep up the amazing work! I remember buying a sd card 128gb for £67 and they told me it was genuine check the card it read 8gb took it back and said i was lying, even showed them the results and refused to offer refund on the faulty card =/
I agree mate, without sounding like a dick, cex are literally full of B.O smelling adolescents who can't get a job elsewhere because they don't know how to wash properly 😂 doesn't surprise me about the SD card, they were selling a load of fake stuff at one point. Shows how under trained their staff are. Sorry to hear about that though 😞
Exactly the same thing happened to me, with CEX. I shopped there once and I’d never even step foot inside their embarrassment of a shop, ever again. It was 2011 and I just bought a ps3. I went to CEX for first time and bought around 4 games, costing around £80 total. 1 game I bought was fallout 3 game of the year edition. I went to play the game, around 10 days later and noticed that they gave me the regular edition. I went back, expecting a apology and exchange for goty edition (what I paid for) and was told that I should have went back, no later then 2 days after purchase. I was like, are you kidding me? The guy tried to imply that I was lying and was trying to upgrade my game for free BUT I think that he knew I was telling the truth and just was being a dick and maybe they knew they gave me wrong version and just thought, fuck it. Either way, I would even take something from them, even for free and the games I bought looked like they had been through a sewer.
@@grahamkelly8662 I remember buying some ps2 games years ago and 1 of them was vice city stories and they gave me the wrong original vice city disc and the disc didnt even work 😂
I was thinking they should implement a hygiene policy but then they'd probably go out of business by next month. Maybe it'd be for the better, who knows...
Great save Phil, just shows that not everyone knows what they are doin in some cases
Excellent fella! Your mad skills are phenomenal…
Do you repair car fuse boards or do you think you could? The later mk5 and mk6 escort boards are a common problem for going bad.
Keep up the hard work buddy.
Great video Phil thank you for the upload mate ❤️
nice work as always phil
you show em buddy , i love electronics good job mate !
Great job man! Amateurs at CEX even a noob would question what way the ribbon goes in😂. The console whisperer did it again 💪
It goes in the same way as the others on the board - tab, blue or otherwise ALWAYS faces upwards 🤣🤠
@@twogitsinacar4811 Yeah most cables are even bend and taped down to go in a certain way without a twist.
Subscribed! Not only is it nice to have a British Based Tech Channel I detect a fellow
Midlander accent😂
just sub to your channel im not in to fixing but like to watch and learn thanks for uploads somethink to watch when im bored 👍
It's always so satisfying to see things rescued from the e-waste pile.
I'm amazed how often a piece of tech develop's a previously unknown fault, the moment one enters a cex store
Yep, my Ryzen 5 1600 mysteriously developed multiple bent pins in between my leaving it with them for testing/sale and coming back to finalise the sale. They were all bluff and bluster right up to the moment I showed them the timestamped photo of me taking a pristine CPU into the shop.
We have a chap that sometimes works with us who bought what was advertised as a monitor from CEX. when he got it home he discovered it was a TV with additional inputs. Not happy he went back and demanded his money back, after seeing the sign on the counter that said "Refunds were available" - Then the fun started - Our man eventually won after showing the CEX chap the sign on his own counter !
What CEX actually do is they take your stuff at a really knock down price, check on eBay and then mark it up by 60%
Nice job mate!
Another great video Phil, I've recently decided to take the dive into this hobby. I've bought a basic set up from your old AliExpress video but was wondering if you could recommend some decent solder that can be bought in the UK as I'm struggling to find anything.
Thanks.
Awesome mate. Yeah I've been told by several people (bot tried it myself) that this is good stuff
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284730011584
In fairness as long as it's 63/37 and 0.3mm to 0.5mm it should be perfect :)
In my experience (33 years) usually ribbon cable connectors on PCB's always face the same way. It would be fair to say CEX plugged the power ribbon in upside down. Most laptops we come across always have the blue tabs on ribbon connectors facing the same way usually upwards. This acts as a memory aid if you look at the others then you know which way round the one you are holding is supposed to go !
I was giving my brothers PS4 Pro console a much needed clean out the other day over at his place, as he mentioned to me that his console was running louder (the cooling fan) than normal. The factory applied "Thermal Paste was hard and brittle on the APU and heatsink along with clumps of yellowish coloured dust in all the plastic case parts and i noticed that there was a lot of "Overheating/brown marks" on the internal metal shield plates. So the consoles disassembly was going great until it came to the part of removing the consoles internal power supplies power cable from it's mainboard socket. As i was gently pulling the cable to release it, it came away from the main board complete with the white socket and the main board solder pads :(
Now all my own electronics tools and equipment where all back my house, so i was left to attempt some kind of repair job with the tools that my brother has in his collection. 1x heavy duty soldering iron (which i reckon was 30-40 Watts and i know was NOT ideal for the job in hand), heavy duty solder and the only wire he could find, was from a broken set of headphones.
I managed to complete the repair (ran 6x wires from the lifted sockets 6x solder pins and soldered each wire to the scratched off trace lines.
Put the console 99% back together to test power it up and BINGO it powered up perfect. Got a phone the next morning from my brother, informing me that his console was not working (he mentioned that it powered up but no display on his tv).
My gut feeling is that the consoles APU could be to fault due to past overheating and stress on the chip but without the console in front of me to re-check it over, i'm at a loss to be honest.
My level and experience of repairing game consoles goes back to the days of the PS1, so it's not as if i'm a noob attempting such a repair job. If you can give him a shout, here on your Y/Tube channel, his name is Alan and like me, he's an avid watcher of your uploads.
Another Tech Centre special. You can honestly get some right deals from this place.
Everyday our politicians & celebrities harp on about us throwing too much away, not recycling enough, stop wasting energy etc. Yet the reality is that government & companies do little to encourage fixes & in this case, CEX either chose to purposely break it further or used inexperienced staff who clearly had no idea how to resolve & rather than getting someone else with more experience to investigate just labelled it "unrepairable". Brilliant to see you bring something back to life that was declared "Unrepairable". Subscribed.
Brilliant work
Another cracking video you're a jedi of your trade mate
When I worked at CEX, I just looked to see if its something I can quickly fix at test such as clearing the dust and what not from overheating since it saves like £50+
You gave me the cofidence to crack open an old PS3 that was shutting down constantly.. Turns out the thermal paste had been reapplied at some point and they didn't do it correctly. Now I have my PS3 working again smooth as silk!
That's awesome man, nice win! Glad these videos are helping people gain the confidence they need to fix their own stuff :)
@@TheCod3r you would have managed this repair in about 5 seconds but it was a big win to see my old PS3 come back to it's former glory haha. Love your work man
excellent work
I bought a Wii U from CEX not long ago and it came in great condition. Had no problems with it so far. Also bought some 2nd hand games from them which have all worked fine.
Yeah most the time they are OK, I've had a few faulty items though but most of that is laziness from the testers
Well done fixing it
You talkin to the system cracked me up 🤣🤣
Good job!
You can buy the wire. It's often called "enamaled wire" or "magnet wire". Rossmann probably has some on his shop.
Yeah you can buy it, but not the stuff I use. I use the wire out of a microwave fan so it's 0.17mm wire. Sadly I haven't found anywhere to buy it from yet
well done great job bud
Love when you work on their stuff.
Amazing job.
hi could you tell me what i should be charged to replace the charging port on a galaxy tab a 6 thanks.
Awesome fix
Great job mate 👍 👏 so enjoy your videos 📹 👍 please keep them coming 🙏 👍 and here to help get your videos 📹 😉 out to everyone to enjoy 😉 😀 cheers buddy 👍 😀 😉
Inspector Cod3r, the board whisperer... And now I have the tune to inspector gadget running around my head 🤬 lmao.
hahaha whoops, to be honest I've been playing it back in my head all night since editing the video too lol
Today I got a White PS4 for $40 local that was 'broken with white light' I got super lucky and was only a destroyed HDD! I was a bit disappointed cos I thought I might finally be able to do a HDMI and follow a video of yours like a guide haha!
Awesome win mate, nice easy profit for you there :) hopefully the next one will be a bit more fun though lol
Nice video as usual. Did a wifi/bluetooth module on a slim a couple days ago and the board had a 96 module on it. I used a 91 and it worked just fine. Are you at 480 when removing the module? Keep up the great videos. I watch them all 😎
Thanks buddy, yeah I use 480 on these because of the shielding blocking some of the heat transfer :) I do know some of them are compatible but last time I risked it I ended up with a BLOD which I couldn't fix, ended up having to replace the board lol
@@TheCod3r oh dang. Well I got the wrong module sent and still didn't have my .76 solder balls in yet so I just went for it. Took me a few times to get it flat enough balling it with the iron and yes I learned it could blod with the wifi module when it wasn't installed right the second time lol
it might be a different console to the one sent off, i once sent a sony phone to warranty with lines in the screen after having it a month, they refused warranty because the phone was routed and sent me an invoice for 200 if i wanted repair, i told them to return it to me, they sent me a completely different phone with a good screen and a dead power button , i was buzzing had it fixed for a tenna instead of ungluing the screen !
If I live were you are you be the only repair service if I can't do it my self
25:30 why didn't you just resolder the antenna point first instead of going straight for the IC chip? (yes I know I paused before watching the rest but I was was wondering before seeing the rest of the video)
Very valid and good point, I should've probably explained that in the video. The main deciding factor is that it never even attempts to sync by showing a blue light on the controller. Generally if it's an antenna fault it should try and sync and drop connection rather than no connection at all
They do out source the work. They use a Company called Tech Centre in Castleford.
Finally, a video! it has been AGES! (kidding, upward to 1 million views!)
I have a ps4 slim that i bought 2nd hand and it actually plays games but there is visual artifacts when i play games. Ive initialized, rebuilt the database, reinstalled the games, and fully cleaned the system out and put new thermal paste. Ive noticed the artifacts only appear on high graphic games. No artifacts appeared when i played star wars episode 1 racer. But they did appear when i played fortnite. Would you know if this ps4 slim I have is repairable?
I brought a few things in the past from CEX and I have ended up taking them all back as there was something wrong with them I don't use them anymore as nothing is checked or tested properly
In the whole of the East end of Glasgow there is only one repair shop that has the skill to do console repairs (and every other electronic device) but theres hundreds of mobile repair places.. there's 1 cex which is useless.. its always made me wonder why more skilled folks don't open wee shop's.. there is a lack of skill on the high street and a massive gap in that market not really being filled.. the shop i use in the west is brilliantly priced aswel.. same work done by sending console away is often times double..even triple. Anyway.. just a wee rant.. would love to see waaay more skilled people lile yourself in my part of my city just for that extra competitive pricing ect
I just got The Last of Us part 2 ps4 pro console off CEX. didn't have TLOU II controller, only a basic controller and the vents on the sides was full of dust bunnies. Had to clean it before even thinking of powering it up
We have a few CEX shops here in Australia too, I've had a look in there a couple times, rather expensive & appeared a little dodgy.
Sounds like they're not much different in the UK.
Yeah sounds about right mate, I think they're probably the same with the same business practices to be honest
@@TheCod3r I’ve visited CEX in the UK and Poland and it’s the same weird experience. It’s imo a great place to sell unwanted stuff no one else would buy so you can get 💵. I bought some cheap games there, but would never trust them enough to buy something like a console.
@@marmo_lada Had a lot of dealings with CEX and oddly, the retail side seem fairly 'straight'. A reasonably bomb-proof two year warranty on electronics goods is not to be sneered at, particularly when you consider what you might get from a random eBay seller, or someone off (say) FB Marketplace. Yeah, there may be cheaper prices out there, but not with that standard of warranty.
Had an issue with cex with a stealth 600 headset for xbox needless to say when it stopped working a week later I had a very bad experience in store
Good work! This is an example of where independent repair falls down. The larger the company, that harder it would be for them to attract and retain staff with the right skill level to do board repairs. They will thus have a policy of claiming to do repairs but the reality is that they will just pick the low hanging fruit of dodgy disk drives and stuck software updates and reject anything non-trivial as 'unfixable'. They can do this because most consumers are sheep! As an example I offered to look at a freinds's daughter's laptop that was not running well. The girl's response was that she would "only let an IT professional look at it" and she was going to take it in to Currys Tech Dept. If it is an easy fix they will do it and rip her off and she will be happy but they are unlikely to do much else. What can you do!
Sadly this is very true. My own sister used to be very hesitant at letting me work on her devices until just recently. They trust me 100% now but used to believe I would bodge the repair or mess up bad enough to cause irrepairable damage. The world walks around with its' eyes closed
Companies like CEX as Phil says should farm their complex repairs out that would be a really good thing to do from an e-waste point of view, also a right to repair view and it would keep more things serviceable for a bit longer.
TheCod3r, can you sort the sound out? it sounds like you are talking through a cardboard tube.
Just found your channel and subbed. Sadly sent my PS4 pro to cex for repair last week. Waiting for their report. If they can’t fix it. Maybe you can ?
ive no idea why you replaced the Chip when all that was needed was the connector port only as you could see from the very start when it was turned over the wifi/bluetooth wire that sprawled along the metal casing was loose, with it being unplugged from the circuit board it wouldnt connect anything to the controller or even connect to wifi for that reason.... you know what they say work Smarter not Harder but in youre case you work Harder not Smarter
Hey, new to the channel, enjoying the content. I've tried to book a repair on the website but the links are broken and get 404 error on the "get in touch" tab, are you still taking repairs in? Many thanks, just subbed too :)
Hey bud, thanks for the sub. Yeah I am taking repairs but my hosting provider is having a lot of difficulties, so I'm moving to a new provider. You can email me though at hello@consolefix.co.uk in the meantime
Hiya mate is it possible for you to fix or replace my broken fan in my xbox one x please
Yeah I can do mate. For the fan I charge £45 plus return shipping. Is it the fan that's failed or just overheating (overheating is £35 rather than £45)
Can you fix the L2 R2 Triggers on the ps5 controller?
when i was younger i got 2 games from cex 1 ridiculously heavily scratched disk and the other was a demo disk despite it said full game on the case that was cracked btw although since then i have had no majour issues with cex
they have a set price menu for repairs ... they ARE outsourced to a company. if the company says it'll cost more than the price or its a repair that the customer didn't discribe, its returned. customer pays nothing
Bromley store is my local one . No one in that store looks capable of anything except operating a cash register. I wouldn’t trust them with my console but I would trust you .
They definitely don't seem too good at their job lol. Thanks buddy I appreciate that
Signing up to twitch later today to give you my prime sub. Great videos mate. I like watching the diagnosis of problems and how you explain and the stories .
all you know about the sticker is that its similar to a cex sticker but probably also similar to a lot of shop bought stickers of the same stickerbrand. So basically all you know is that there was a sticker on the ribbon. Where that sticker came from or who put it there can not be determined beyond reasonable doubt. You need to up your detective game coder. Leave all options open until you have definitive proof. That said like your vids.
That's very true lol, seems odd though really doesn't it? Thanks buddy, glad you enjoy them
@@TheCod3r Yes it does look suspicious and if this were a true police investigation the spotlights would be on cex for a while now :) fiber and dna checks are forthcoming.
Fantastic video as always Phil mate but talking to a PS4 mate have you ever thought about getting in touch with a psychiatrist 😂 😂😂
haha thanks mate, I tried, they couldn't help... Apparently I'm too far gone haha
They did that and they made the console like that no one else
CEX a few years ago offered me £90 for a console that was £110 or £120 (can't remember) on their website and told me it was because the stores have different prices, I just accepted as couldn't be bothered arguing, it was for a PS4 with limited use to point it looked brand new, OG box that looked brand new, OG cables inc a unused sealed HDMI cable, and the controller I opened and wiped down with IPA. Seconds after I sold it they in front of me trashed the box and the next day I went in and saw it on the shelves for about £170.
to be fair I like cex but came back with a stick or ddr 3 laptop ram I got it didn't fit (was my fault didn't check the sticks were same I assumed they were ) but brought in the one from the system to show it was different and literally no one knew what to do and they went through every staff member before 1 person finally knew that it was a few pins different I already knew that just didn't know what to look for and after a bit waiting they finally found one that would fit I assumed they would know that the sticks are different working at cex although the Xbox 360 I got yesterday works fine and sound very quiet fans are on just been reasonably well cleaned so not had many issues in a long while from cex

I've had some experience working on some PS4s. I find them a bit easier to work on than a phone.
What else can you find at the cex shop? ;)
Poor PS4 CeX don’t deserve to sell consoles never mind repair them awesome job Philly bob
They tried to peel off the back plate and had no idea that there was a screw under the sticker, this was literally the persons first ps4 slim open.
